Is Obama the 'food stamp president?'

New York (CNNMoney) - A record 44.7 million people - or 1 in 7 Americans - were on food stamps last year. But does that make Barack Obama the "food stamp president?"

Newt Gingrich once again slapped that label on Obama during a South Carolina debate Monday night, saying: "The fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history."

To be fair to Obama, all democratic presidents are "food stamp presidents." That is one of the places their voting base comes from, those dependent on government entitlements.

Let us be clear, Newt Gingrich has the audacity to complain about people who are in need getting foodstamp, when Romney has only paid 15% on his 250million dollars. Newt Gingrich you are full of "Pious Baloney"

Why can't Gingrich call him also: "A President for poor people" because food-stamps and poor people both exist. What is he afraid of??? Shame on you Gingrich.

Using the same logic, that makes all Republican presidents "deficit spending presidents". The facts do not lie. Look at the annual deficit before a R took office from a D, what the annual deficit was during his administration. It has been the rs that have driven up our national debt.

Is our national debt increasing under Obama? You betcha, it is. Has Pres. Obama increased the annual deficit compared tp the last year of the GWB administration. No, not by the significant amounts that you see when there is an R in the White House. Will our national debt re-ignite with another R in the White House? You betcha, it will. History says that is a sure bet.

Such a stereotypical claim by Newton. So I guess if Newt becomes President he'll be the first multi-adulterer President.

It's why America is using Foreign workers for technology jobs and people like Duke one to do either what's left of manufacturers jobs or service jobs, I bet either he or one of his relatives is using food stamps. America is rightfully yours right Duke? Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. foolish GOP loosers

Big Liberal Social Government Programs have brought us to where we are today. The latest failure is the Housing Mess that Liberal Democrats put in place allowing anyone to get a Morgage weaher they could afford it or not. Obama favors those "Great" ideas. The result is high unemployment extended unemployment benifits and pending diaster.

It's so funny how none of these Repub candidates ever mention our last illustrious president (the real food stamp one) They revert all the way back to Reagan because they figure most people are either too old or too young to remember those days and they can easily pull the wool over our eyes. President Obama is doing a great job with what he has to work with...a Congress that only wants his demise. He can claim positive job growth for the past two years so all he needs is another term and he'll have this country in much better shape and more prepared for the 21st century. We must give Obama the chance he deserves especially since we gave Bush/Cheney 8 years to create our downfall!

So throwing a vote to him will change that... yeah it will – there will NOT be any food stamps program!!! It will be one of the first things cut by him and the Tea Party controlling Congress.

Obama is not only the food stamp president, he's the total government dependence president. I am firmly convinced he is a closet socialist and would simply TAKE private wealth and property to give it to others, if he felt he could get away with it. The USSC that the libtards in here love to rail against voted to do just that (except with some compensation) with private property that cities wanted to get more tax revenue from. Individual private property rights were subjugated to the need of the collective fo rmoney. Absolutely socialist, and caused many states to prohibit the practice.

Socialism is here and infiltrating every aspect of our society. It must be confronted and fought every step of the way.

I think they should drug test for ANY KIND of government benefits. Unemployment, Welfare, Food Stamps.....EVERYTHING. I guarantee that would weed out 25% or so. If you are sitting on your ass smoking weed or crack, not looking for a job, you should get NOTHING.

Is there any doubt and with his calls to hate and destroy those people who actually work and pay taxes and act responsibly, he will be the food stamp king eventually. He and the liberals do not believe in the freedom of the individual and act only for the "party" and themselves. If this sounds familiar, remember who his teachers and friends are.

Funny how you can skew numbers. Bush Jr. spends madly and drives us into a recession. People lose their jobs, and go on food stamps, yet it is Obama's fault. I'm sure if Newt were in charge though, there would be less people on food stamps. Not because they would be employed, but the GOP would take that help away from the needy.

LOL. Did Gingrich think this through?

Does that mean that Gingrich will run on the "starve the poor" platform?

It's just another not-too-subliminal stereotyping appeal to the Republican base. Who would want to be associated with such a prejudicial group of people?

@Adam P: What YOU and Obama Kool Aid drinkers like you fail to realize is the path this President and Liberals supporting him are taking America is clearly toward Euro-style Socialism. Spending has now eclipsed our entire GNP. Obama wants bigger Government and the majority of Americans DEPENDANT on it! You have asked Duke1 not to spread ignorance but from my vantage point, YOU are the idiot! Paychecks not Foodstamps Dude!

Wouldn't need food stamps if we didn't have 8 years of deficit spending, Bush Tax cuts, two unfunded wars, a manufactured housing boom and Medicare Part D... but hey, let's keep repeating those Fox News talking points.
