Is Obama the 'food stamp president?'

New York (CNNMoney) - A record 44.7 million people - or 1 in 7 Americans - were on food stamps last year. But does that make Barack Obama the "food stamp president?"

Newt Gingrich once again slapped that label on Obama during a South Carolina debate Monday night, saying: "The fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history."

Newt is an idiot. Thanks to the LATEST Bush Recession we do have record numbers of people on food stamps, because honest people can't make a living in a Repuke economy.

  4. What is Gingrich's solution?

And Gingrich would have preferred food stamps didn't exist, so people could just starve to death after being laid off. Also, child labor laws are quite annoying too... let's de-evolve back to the 1900's where children could work in coal mines... Things were so much better back then, amirite?

Yes, he is the worst President ever !! Instead of creating an environment to create jobs while he and the Dems had all 3 houses, he shoved Obamacare and other regulations that strangles job growth down our throats !! He should have focused on JOBS. He doesn't care about the American people or this would have been his TOP PRIORITY.

Does anyone in CNN or in the republican party know math? The rate of food stamps will continue to rise each year because the population will increase each year! I can say surely and confident that number will never decrease.

All the people put on unemployment by the Bush Admin had to go on food stamps. Plus, a lot of the food stamps recipients are lower-grade military families, and the working poor. You know, the one's that make less than a living wage. Maybe if we taxed the corporations and wealthy more, the folks could get a higher minimum wage.

People are on food stamps because of the recession. And exactly how did this recession come about? Whose policies led to the Great Recession? I'll give you a hint; it's the same party that has fought tooth and nail against anything that could improve the situation.

In the last great depression we didn't yet have such a program to help people in serious need. This nation has to be civilized and concerned for the welfare of it's citizenry whether it's SNAP or whatever...we're not going back to dog-eat-dog mentality without such programs in place. It doesn't matter who is President. We are a caring civilization and provide for contingencies! It's these provisions for our people that make us who we are in the world!

Newt's comments show how out of touch Republicans are with the middle class. If you're not making a million dollars a year then you must be on food stamps! However do you survive?? Stupid anti-middle class Republicans!

I sure as heck don't agree with everything that Obama has done. However, with Huntsman now gone, the chances that I'd vote for Obama have increased.

The current Republican presidential candidates resemble a bunch of narrow-minded, stupid clowns. Why do Gingrich (and others) completely ignore the fact that the economy was in free fall at the time that their best friend Bush '43 took office? Why does this glaring fact somehow not exist for them?

On top of this, Governor Perry's latest comments about Turkey reflect some of the most eye-popping STUPIDITY I have ever heard. If my beloved USA is stupid enough to elect a vacuous, loud-mouthed HICK like Rick Perry, then I am afraid that we are all doomed.

If Pres. Obama is "The Food Stamp President, what does that make Pres. Bush? "The Corporate Welfare President"? The Republican ideological policies of the Bush administration is mostly to blame for loss of millions of manufacturing jobs.

One would think that the loss of 8 million jobs in Bush's last three years, the unfunded wars, and the republicans' refusal to support any job creation legislation would have something to do with slowing our recovery from the great Bush near depression. But according to right wingnuts, its all Obama's fault.

This President inherits a historic mess.... from the so called "conservatives".... that could not be solved overnight and the same goofs that put us in this mess have the temerity to suggest he is the food stamp president? Their ridiculous jive has made choosing who to vote for in November a no brainer.

Food stamp president is being applied to "that" particular base of people who relate dependent and lazy to black people. The more people believe this – the less likely they are to vote for the president. It works real well with "that" type – not so much with the more educated and informed.

What the GRINCH does not realize is the fact that many people on food stamps DO WORK – it's not like they sit at home waiting for a "food stamp" handout!! Then again, it boils down to INCOME INEQUALITY because there are too many people BELOW the poverty level.

Also, when unemployment RISE, the need for food RISES – I cannot STAND ginGRINCH – he is a NASTY wannabe so-called tough-ash moron that out there ONLY to make the far-RIGHT happy. He FAILS to connect with the main stream of America. He is NOT going to be our next president NOR vice president because he's too arrogant and racist and it shows – including his audience that cheered him on.

Juan Williams is so "wrapped-up" in his world of conservationism, he couldn't even recognize that he was being ridiculed by his audience in regards to RACE. After the debate, he was "passive" with the audience and did not mention anything negative about it. He is brainwashed as much as Cain was – it's sad that neither of them see it!!!

    Obama 2012!!

Let's accept your inital premises for a moment. What were the Republicans doing during this interregnum? Nothing.

Snap bck to the real world, we have seen 22 consecutive months of jobs growth. The markets nearly recovered to their old levels. We have not yet seen rampant inflation.

Actually, GW Bush is the food stamp president. It was under his watch that more Americans slid into unemployment, lost their homes and were forced to need food stamps.

His job creation rate for his term was the lowest in history. We she 3 million jobs before he left office. GW Bush forced more Americans onto food stamps much more so than President Obama – problem is, facts don't matter to the right – as long as it keeps them frothing, facts just don't matter.

I like that "people are on foodstamps because of the recession" or because of Bush recession.
Truth is obama has said he wanted to share the wealth as a part of his plan. Foodstamps and government handouts are the only way the career wealfare can recieve wealth of the working people. Also he can buy votes with handouts.
More tax the rich and give to the lazy!
