(CNN) – Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords announced on her website Sunday that she will resign from Congress this week to continue her recuperation from the brain injury she suffered when shot just over a year ago.
"A lot has happened over the past year. We cannot change that," Giffords says in a video on her website, speaking in a halting voice.
"Thank you for your prayers and for giving me time to recover," she says in the video. "I have more work to do on my recovery. So to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week."

best of luck to Gabrielle on her recovery!
This makes me very sad – good luck on your recovery, Gabby – we are praying for you!
This woman is a class act.
She knows she can't be a fully functioning Representative and is stepping aside for the good of her state.
I wish her well in her recovery and life.
Arguably one of the strongest wills ever. Heal, Gabby, your recovery is the important thing.
God bless you, and I wish you the best in your recovery efforts. Thanks for representing America.
If you can no longer do your job
Then you must leave good choice thanks.
I think Miss G is a very brave lady, I wish her and her loved ones Godspeed on their journey towards wellness
Even us DEMS love you!!!!
A politician putting the needs of the people before their own. God bless you Rep. Giffords. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Your life has and will continue to change many others.....for the better.
Finish your rehab and run again when you ready. AZ needs more reps like you!
I admire your fighting spirit. Your extreme will to overcome the odds & recover from physical &, no doubt, emotional trauma. You are truly an inspiration to me, an example of what you can do in the face of adversity. As a lifelong (& pure bred Democrat) your work for & love of our country will be sorely missed. I hope, at some point, when you are ready, to see you back in Washington, working for the good of the common people, the ones who really keep this country going & growing. God's speed in your continuing recovery.
Keep up the recovery. You are right, you have to give yourself more time. You'll be back! We are all rooting for you and Mark. xoxo
What a loss for us in politics. I wish her continued recovery. She is an example of courage.
Gabrielle Giffords is an inspiration to all of us who search, and work, for a better tomorrow. Public officials who put their egos aside and act on what they believe is best for their citizens must be honored, whatever their partisan affiliation.
We honor you Gabby for your patriotism and your service to America – both in the past, and in the future.

God Bless You, recover completely and return, we need people like you in Congress!
she was a good one ... but smart not to run...good luck
Kudos to Ms. Gabrielle Gifford. I don't even live in Arizona, but I've followed the news of what happened there over a year ago.
I'm glad she's recovering, on top of being alive. Several insights can be drawn from that violent experience. First, how come deranged individuals have access to firearms in the first place? Second, isn't it sad that one of the few senators who actually are moderate, non ideological and who really work across the aisle? Third, I surely hope the fat cats in our mess of a Congress start to change their rhetoric. And that goes for the House as well.
Time to walk away from the political extremism, Republicans and Democrats.
I wish you well, But I don't understand You seem to be doing as well as any of the rest.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and a HAPPY life. You are an inspiration to me. I will keep you in my prayers.Petie xxx
What a shame that a bright, intelligent young and enthusiastic representative like Gabby Giffords is forced to resign while a wretched, hypocritical gassbag like Gingrich gets to have another go at the country.
God Bless you and you husband, hope for sucess in your future endeavors...
Good Luck
GodSpeed Gabby even in your condition I think you could do a far better job than over half of what sits in Congress right now on BOTH sides of the aisle. I am happy though the decision was yours and not somebody trying to force you out. You will be missed but not forgotten.
We are reached to the bad time, where known and unknown enemies are causing obstacles for our personal and our Country growth. We are struggling for the goodwill of our Constituency and our Country, but the enemies are keep tracking and controlled our movements, one day to damage our carrier and our life.
Why they don't try to work with US for goodwill of the people and the Country? How many of them are out there waiting to do harm and evil things against the Society and the Country in general? Since we don't have time to notice the evils among US, it's also the Constituency and people who have good thought of the Country responsibility to deter evil things before it happened.
This lovely Congresswoman cannot be a Security Guard and a servant for the Constituency at the same time. It's like you can't expect the Teacher in Classroom with full of Students stood in front of them, cannot seat with them at the same time, to monitor who is carrying Weapon to harm the Teacher. It is the Students responsibility to filter out the evil who Seat beside them, to protect their chosen/favour Teacher .
I blame her Constituency who didn't protect her from the Shooter .
To serve you better, you (the Constituency) MUST PROVIDE ACCOMMODATION! This include with safety of the Congresswoman.
