Romney issues preemptive Obama jabs

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - Keeping up his newly aggressive tone, Mitt Romney drubbed President Obama at a Tuesday event for amassing a "record of debt, decline and disappointment" in a fiery preemptive response on the eve of the president's State of the Union address.

In a formal speech to about 100 Floridians, Romney faulted Obama for failing to bring the unemployment rate under 8% and accused the president of "making these troubled times last longer."

"Tonight, the President will do what he does best. He will give a nice speech with a lot of memorable phrases," Romney said. "But he won't give you the hard numbers."

While campaigning in a state hard hit by the foreclosure crisis, Romney continued his characterization of Obama as a tax-and-spend president who made big promises but did not follow through.

"He keeps telling people, 'We can't wait,'" said Romney, in a riff on a pair of Obama campaign slogans. "To which I say, 'Yes, we can.'"

The optics of the event underlined Romney's message. Reading from a teleprompter, he stood behind a podium in a cavernous former plant that has been shuttered in 2008. Behind him hung a banner that proclaimed: "Obama Isn't Working."

Romney likened the president's address to Congress to a campaign event.

"We'll also be treated to more divisive rhetoric from a desperate campaigner-in-chief," he said. "It's shameful for a President to use the State of the Union to divide our nation."

He charged the president would ignore the difficulties of average Americans in his speech, and said instead Obama would try to "take another victory lap" and present a picture of a "thriving" America.

"The unemployed don't get invitations to sit with the first lady," Romney said about the carefully planned invitations to watch the president's speech in Congress.

The Democratic National Committee said Romney was "distorting the president's record and vision" in the speech.

"Romney knows that unlike President Obama, who will focus tonight on laying out a blueprint for an America that's built to last and where hard work and responsibility are rewarded, he can't win by running on his own record," the DNC said in a statement. "That's because it turned out to be an absolute disaster for America's working and middle-class families."

Romney is so busy saying things about President Obama, things that he KNOWS are not true, that he has no time to tell us what he would do.

Someone needs to point out to Mitt Romney that he didn't present any hard numbers either. Someone needs to point out to Mitt Romney that, like all of his colleagues, he is proposing the same "trickle down" tax policies that we have seen fail for the past 30 years. That's what got us into this mess in the first place.

I love the banner – irony is that Obama IS working (for the American people). And Romney is technically self-employed – meaning that he's getting very rich working only for himself.

There's a metaphor in there for people smart enough to see it.

I listened to Romney speech, I walk away wondering what planet is he living on? It was a constant stream of fact free hyperbole. It was really pretty pathetic, totally detached from reality – and delivered without an ounce of shame. Really pathetic.

You cannot blame Obama for the failure of Congress to pass his requested programs. Had they given him all of the tools asked for, this may not be an issue.Because of a senate block by Republicans we never got the infrastructure fuding asked for. We never got the debt reducing return of the tax codes in 2010 as promised by George Bush when his reductions were requested.
To blame Obama and not Congress shows how out of touch with our processes Romney is.

The LAST thing this country needs is the incompetent Obama to lay out a "blueprint for America"!!! The last three years has shown the clueless empty-suited wonder is WAY over his head. The last 3 years has been a blueprint for FAILURE. We don't need his Blueprint for DISASTER as he drives the USA into bankruptcy.

And before he presents this blue print for DISASTER, I wish he would release his college transcripts so we can all see just how many finance and economic course he took and passed. Judging from the last 3 years, the answer is ZERO and ZERO.

I watched thier debate last night out of curiosity & believe me it was hard to keep dinner down. Romney is a liar. I lost count how many times he told the the lames in the audience " Obama is a faliure " over & over agian. It reminded me of the way Bachmann would lean over the podium & say over & over 'Obama is a one term president" They are all disgusting.

This guy is unbelievable! He not only changes positions with the wind, he contradicts himself within the same speach.
He says President Obama is divisive?! The only divisivenes is coming from the GOP who would rather continue the destruction of America that Bush started than having President Obama get re-elected so he can fix the mess the previous administration left us. Unfortunately the uneducated Republican conservative base believes anything this guys say.

Mitt is worth over 200 million dollars? So WHY in the heck does a want a job that pays 400grand a year and all the headaches in the world? If I were as rich as him, with several houses and basically not a care in the world financially for my self and my family I guess it's only the power that attracks him because he is running for a party where most don't even seem to want, like, or support him.

I love how he lies! Its amazing that he can say it all with a straight face! President Obama may be the LEAST divisive president in our history!!! On another note, watching mittens "pretend" to be angry really reminds me of when I was a kid, my mom had these 2 poodles that would jump in the window and bark like crazy when big dogs would walk by...cant WAIT to see this poodle tuck his tail and run when the window is gone and he has to debate THE BIG DOG (Obama) in a debate!

To truth and nothing but the truth: I said before that every time you post on this blog you prove how stupid you are. If you would educate yourself a litlle, just a little, instead of buying the lies spewed by the GOPers, you would understand that the economy is way better today than it was 3 years ago after the Bush disaster. If a Republican wins the presidency again (God forbid!) you will see the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, air polution worse than Mexico City's, poluted water ways worse than China's, wars with Iran and Syria, reduced SS and medicare benefits, etc., etc.
Of course, if your problem is that the President "is not one of us", go ahead and vote Republican and then explain it to your children and grandchildren.

Devisive? What is more devisive than a 1 per center seeking the vote of the 99 per centers? Stand down Romney so that the politics of class warfare does not escalate to revolution. You and the rest of the R's are making this the ugliest campaign in history.
