(CNN) - Newt Gingrich's campaign admitted Wednesday night the former House speaker was inaccurate when he claimed his team offered several witnesses to ABC News to refute statements made by Gingrich's second wife in a controversial interview aired last week.
CNN Chief National Correspondent John King reported the campaign said it only recommended Gingrich's two daughters from his first marriage, who wrote a letter discouraging ABC to release the interview.

Marianne Gingrich claimed in the ABC interview that her husband asked for an open marriage while he was having an extramarital affair with his current wife, Callista Gingrich.
"The story was false. Every personal friend I have who knew us in that period says the story is false. We offered several of them to ABC to prove it was false. They weren't interested," Gingrich said at a CNN debate last week.
In an interview on Tuesday, King pressed Gingrich on those claims, saying ABC News insisted no such witnesses were put forward.
Gingrich said ABC's defense was "just plain baloney."
"If they're saying that, then they're not being honest," Gingrich said. "We had several people prepared to be very clear and very aggressive in their dispute about that, and (ABC News) wasn't interested."
On Wednesday, however, the campaign conceded the candidate was wrong, both in his debate answer and in his interview with CNN on Tuesday.
R.C. Hammond, the campaign's press secretary, told CNN the only people the campaign offered to ABC were the speaker's two daughters, Jackie Cushman and Kathy Gingrich Lubbers, who make regular appearances for their father on the campaign trail.

The new caligula.
The difference between Newt and Mitt is that at least Newt has the guts to admit that he lied. Mitt's head is probably spinning in circles trying to keep all his "errors" in check.
He wasn't "wrong", he LIED.
This is only the beginning. It's going to be fun to watching the end of Newt's political career. I hope that the powers that be bring out the knives and filet this dirty rat.
This lie is easily caught so he admitted it. It makes it that much more believable that the open marriage thing was real.
I can't believe anyone is surprised that Gingrich lied, then lied to try to cover up the first lie, then lied to try to cover up the cover-up, then... well, it goes on ad nauseam - nothing new there, but what's the story with that fiberglass-haired beanpole store-mannequin in the oh-so-'80s red "Power" dress and the painted-on smile they prop up on stage with him - always one step to the side, two steps back? Don't tell me that's a human - the thing hasn't changed expression since its first appearance.
So sorting out the lies and inaccuracies, Newt's Family Values Stand is that gay marriage is a sin, but an "open" marriage is all jake to the angels? I only hope he picks Bachmann as a running mate, so we get to see them BOTH go down in flames.
Even if Gingrich had been correct about offering witnesses how can a third party attest to what happens in someone else's marriage? If this weren't so serious you'd have to laugh at his hypocrisy on a whole range of topics.
Newt lied, nope.
Its the democrats fault,
its the media's fault,
Its Romneys fault,
Its Newts ex wife's fault.
Have i covered everything ?
More liberal media bias....
So...he used his daughters from his first wife, to refute what his second wife said, and support his third wife. You just can't beat politics, especially when it's played by lying politicians.
Wolf Blitzer... don't be like John King – grow a pair and ask the question again... this time asking that he refrain from telling another lie and be honest. Additionally, make sure he tries not to A) Attack the media for the problem that is his and his alone and B) Make sure he does not try to use the "I'm a grandfather" line as a way to suggest that grandparents cannot be immoral and bad role models. Gingrich wants us to believe he is in the mold of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher... both role models for the right. How can anyone consider a President Gingrich as a role model given his background of philandering and his taking the vow of marriage as insincere as possible? How can we expect him to defend marriage when he has thumbed his nose at it.... not in the divorce, but in his desire to have an open marriage of infidelity while remaining married to a woman with MS? How is THIS form of marriage paramount and gay marriage is forbidden? WOLF- DON"T LET NEWT ESCAPE TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS ISSUE. HE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER IT AND IT IS BETTER NOW THAN LATER!
I feel bad for the cookie.
The Grinch lies, so whats new?
Is anyone surprised? The fact that this pathological liar is the GOP front runner says something about the GOP.
This creep is as slimy as they come. He should really be managing a Buy here... pay here used car lot with his pinkie ring. It says a lot about America when we see a dog like him get to where he is in the polls. Have we lost all intelligence, honorable character and pride? Do we have no more class and style?
It sure says a lot about the people who voted for Newt in SC. This isn't about slimy, disgraceful Newt Gingrich. This is about how some Americans think Newt can beat Obama with nasty language, lies, smears and racial hatred. Hate will make even the smartest people forget about their religion, morals and common sense.
Newt, like most in the GOP, make things up as they go along. Then they keep repeating their lies so much that begin to believe those inaccuracies themselves. GOP pseudofact.
Karl Rove was especially talented at picking out something only the rabid extreme would consider relevant and spin it into a wedge issue for the masses, all of course supported by GOP pseudofact.
Okay, is ANYONE from the moderator's table actually going to call Newt out on this tonight?!?!?! He gets to go on national television and not only shoot the messenger (with his little snitty tirade at John King), but the hypocrites in the audience drank it up like the kool-aid they've been consuming since the campaign started. Doesn't Newt now get a chance to apologize to King and the rest of us for throwing that hissy fit when the crap he was hollering has now been shown to be false? I doubt anyone at the table will have the sack to call him on it, but I hope I'm wrong.
Here is a thought why didn't ABC the next day come out and say that Gingrich lied? You would think that the source of the story would know the truth. But not one word about it anywhere. So who is really running the election process? If you are in the News??? business or reality TV it is good for business to keep it going. Gingrich is a slimy as they come but it makes for good ratings to keep him going. We the people need to say goodbye to Gingrich don't vote for him.
Baloney. Every one knows what happens behind closed doors in a marriage can be vastly different from what the public sees. Friends ask aren't Seal and Heidi Klum the most loving couple ever? Yeah, except for that filing of divorce thingie that happened last week. Friends only know what they're shown.
I would expect after this that his poll numbers would drop,
but hey, this is Florida, probably will win.
Newt is such a dishonest man! With the straight face he lied to John King at that debate in SC – and apparently Newt's answer was the turning point for his campaign. Maybe it's time for a do-over in SC now that we know the truth?
I cant wait for the next debate.
Why is his current wife ALWAYS WITH HIM??? WAY TOO GO JOHN!!
Wolfe, Can you come up with a better ? to start this debate? Maybe ask him if he would like to apologize to the USA & John K. It was a great ?, the people need to know everything about him before we hire him. I cannot wait for tonight!!
Keep up the GOOD work.
Clean up on aisle one.
Hey Newt, I'm going to vote for you! Or am I lying?
