Santorum trashes Gingrich moon colony

Tallahassee, Florida (CNN) – A day after Newt Gingrich vowed to build a base on the moon by the end of his second term in office, Rick Santorum suggested that such a promise was merely pandering to Florida voters.

"The idea that anybody's going out and talking about brand new, very expensive schemes to spend more money at a time when we do not have our fiscal house in order in my opinion is playing crass politics and not being realistic with the people of this country as to the nature and gravity of the problem," Santorum said Thursday.

Speaking before 150 students at Florida State University, Santorum said that it was time that politicians were honest about the fact that the debt crisis is simply too big to consider such grand proposals.

"The idea at this point that we're going to create any new expansive plan to create a new mission and fund that mission in any way that could lead to a deployment or development of that mission, I just think is similar to what Speaker Gingrich said the other night when he said he was going to create a new Social Security plan," Santorum said, referencing a heated back-and-forth between him and Gingrich over the speaker's plan for providing a private Social Security option.

He warned the crowd that until the current debt crisis is solved, people shouldn't expect to see many "new, innovative and big ideas," instead they should begin to think about how to "keep things alive" with less money.

Of course, it was pandering. But, the voters on the space coast should ought to now just how ridiculous his suggestion is. Thanks to Tea Party budget cuts to NASA with the scale down of the Shuttle program, R&D on the next mega booster rocket that could reach the moon was stopped. Even if it had not been halted, the development schedule was looking at launches in the mid 2020s. Those folks on the space coast should already know this.

He might be right. Now that we have become a near bankrupt welfare state, we can only dream about doing great things again. We have to make sure the checks arrive every month. Job #1 of the government. Like addicts at the methadone clinic.

You cannot solve a debt crisis without raising revenue.

When you turn back the clock seventy years for republicans, some are not aware we made it to the moon in 1969.

Santorum is on the right about that. But, let's see how many things Republicans would not keep alive if they got back in power again.

Where do you get these lies Rudy??? OBAMA is the one that cancelled NASA programs and funding.

WASHINGTON — More budget cuts will be headed to Texas in the deficit-reduction measures outlined by President Barack Obama's budget,

Gees, Newt wants to spend lots of money? Hmm, this seems to be the mantra of the GOP saying that the current president is spending like crazy. I can only see the dollars going down the toilet with any of the candidates here. Newt wants a moon colony, Mitt wants to bomb Cuba, when is the stupity going to end. I am waiting to hear what Santorum wants to spend $ on.

On the other hand, if someone proposed a colony on the moon to put gays and people with AIDS, Santorum would pull out the stops to fund that.

Maybe Mr. Gingrich's plan is to be president of the moon. In all honesty, the odds are better for that scenario.

Now a moon colony is not a bad idea because of the wealth of information and technology that would come from it, but it just goes to show what a scatter brain Newt is, espousing what sounds much more like a liberal (progressive) idea from a guy who wants to be known as the most "conservative" republican candidate for the presidency. I'm sure that once there are more responses to soundoff, there will be more than one saying – What a great idea and we can send Newt to live out the rest of his days there – also not a bad idea. But I do like the Santorum approach of "keeping things alive" with less money. If these budget cutters ever gain control, it will be short lived because once people loose the services they've become accustomed to we're going to see a firestorm of rage from the electorate which will result in a very short lived conservative rein. I’ve already seen it locally here on the Maine-New Hampshire border and it won’t be pretty if it comes.

I suggest the rest of the debates be held on the moon. That way, this flaccid field of spineless and cowardly candidates will have an easier time walking upright

I dont like Santorum but he is right here. Moon Colony? Thats not very conservative. Gingrich is not electable. When everybody you worked with in Washington says it would be a disaster to have Gingrich in office should tell the American people something. It really scares me.

I think Santorum is remaining in the race to siphon off votes from Newt to prevent him from getting the nomination. Even though I know Romney has a decent chance at beating Obama and Newt has virtually nil, I don't want Newt to get the nomination. I'm sick of his big mouth, and can you imagine how much more puffed up his already massively inflated ego would be?

A politician promising us the moon? It's a stereotype. Rick is an idiot, but apparently not so much as Newt. Who wants to live on the moon? We have deserts if we want to live in a really crappy place. All organic material will have to be shipped there. Think how much soil it takes for a little garden, then think how much would be required for a colony. That would use up even more of our natural resources, making them more expensive on earth, and that's just the fuel to get it there. Then getting a reasonable amount of water up there is just out of the question. Think, people, when politicians say stupid things, it's up to us to call them on it.

If Santorum and Paul just sit back and wait a little while longer Mitt and Newt will take each other out and then maybe the real contest will begin. The more Romney and Gingrich talk, the more obvious it becomes that neither one of them is the sharpest knife in the drawer. Moon colonies, firing judges, cayman islands, defending high school dropouts, whats next-letting people starve cause their to poor to buy food. Maybe just let the kids without health care die to reduce crime or population. These guys make Hoover, McCarthy, and even Nixon look good.
