Winter Park, Florida (CNN) - Newt Gingrich cautioned against crowning Mitt Romney the Republican presidential nominee and pushed his own Washington experience as the answer to the nation's woes as he campaigned in Florida on Saturday.
"We have to have a conservative, otherwise we're going to be as frustrated with the Republican as we were with the Democrat," Gingrich said before an audience of hundreds here at Aloma Baptist Church. "We've tried an amateur for the last three years, and the truth is while he may be good at business, Governor Romney has never had one day of experience trying to get something done in Washington on a scale, on a big scale."

The former House speaker emphasized his decades of experience in Washington by noting, "I've been around longer than some of you have been alive."
He touted his long conservative track record as the key to beating President Barack Obama.
"I believe I have a dramatically better chance of winning this fall than anyone else we could nominate given the current field," he said.
Speaking to an evangelical audience in Winter Park, Gingrich mentioned his other opponent, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, with whom he is competing for the conservative vote.
He resurrected a South Carolina argument that conservatives need to coalesce around one candidate.
"Please just try to convince your friends, the only effective, practical conservative vote on Tuesday is for Newt Gingrich, because that's just a fact," he said.
As he was saying he has "great respect for my good friend Rick," someone in the audience yelled "next time around." Gingrich echoed the sentiment.
"Next time around is a good battle cry."
Gingrich began Saturday along the coast with stops in Stuart and Port St. Lucie. In the afternoon his campaign bus made its way to central Florida to speak at two events in Orlando and the church forum nearby in Winter Park. He'll conclude the day with a speech at the Palm Beach Lincoln Day Dinner.
At a number of campaign stops ranging in crowd size with varied enthusiasm, the former speaker made the case against a Romney nomination by reminding Floridians what happened to past GOP presidential candidates including former Sen. Bob Dole and Sen. John McCain.
"We nominated a moderate in 1996 and we lost. We nominated a moderate in 2008 and we lost. I believe only a solid conservative can debate Barack Obama and win," Gingrich said in Port St. Lucie.
The former speaker exuded confidence after his speech on a putting green at the PGA Learning Center, telling reporters he expects to go all the way to the convention and he will win the nomination.

There is no such thing as a total conservative nor a total liberal. We each have varying degrees of each of those qualities. I would suggest that we need neither a conservative nor a liberal, but rather someone with the qualities of common sense and honesty. Unfortunately neither the Republicans nor Democrats are offering us that person. The closest person to meeting those qualities is Ron Paul, but even if elected neither parties establishment will allow him to successfully lead the country. During his period as Speaker of the House he utilized his position to draw attention to himself, to influence the power of the position, and he accomplished little on his own merit. The GOP needs to find a candidate that the whole party can backup and one that can debate intelligently against Obama in a way that focuses not on the individual byt on the needs of the Nation.

Let us not however forget how many of his options potentially came from Bain consulting nd also thte team of minions that were involved in analysing prospects. he would and did along with his other major investors have had a big say in which ones "to go with" for an LBO or turnaround project, or asset stripping. All these decisions are not like being president of a democratic country when even agood decision can be filibustered or delayed by millions of rules of procedure. His tactic in South Carolina smacks of the type of rhetoric used in his "Southern Strategy" and his "bread and butter" wordage bordering on racist. This candidate started a confrontational debate tonight when confronted with his second wife's allegation of his request for an "Open Marriage"! Gingrich, being from Georgia, continues his stereotyping of blacks in his speeches. Santorum seconded the the continued stereotyping of blacks in his speeches with "I don't to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money." Every TEA-GOP-Republican knows their oratory wording can make or break them depending on which state they are stumping and even the area of that state. They are all career politicians.

Romney is quite conservative, especially now. He's always been conservative in terms of protecting marriage and led the fight against legalizing gay marriage in Massachusetts as Governor. He's had conservative values in his life, and though he may have been a little liberal in terms of abortion, he has changed to be pro-life now. His economic views are very much in line with conservative Republican ideals. If you're doubting he's a Christian because he's Mormon, if you simply look at the lifestyle that Mormons lead, you'll know that Mormons are very conservative in terms of moral values and living.

Yes, we need a Conservative....Someone who will conserve Unions, our environment, the Middle class, rights of a woman to control her own reproduction, our separation of Church and State, and our history of welcoming immigrants to our country. I don't think that Gingrich can really point to anything of a conservative nature really helping the country. I don't see that trickle down economics really working. The conservative idea of leaving government out, but yet they are pro-birth because they oppose abortion and support the death penalty. I don't see how opposing abortion is keeping government out of people's lives. Can they explain that?
