Priebus: Obama's our Capt. Schettino

head shot 1

(CNN) - The chairman of the Republican National Committee unveiled his latest attack on President Barack Obama on Sunday, comparing him to the captain of the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship.

When asked if the infighting in the GOP presidential primary race would harm the eventual nominee's chances against Obama in November, Reince Priebus said the party would unite by then in an effort to win the White House.

Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker

"In a few months, this is all going to be ancient history and we're going to talk about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama who's abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president," Priebus said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Priebus added the president is "fleeing the American people," just like Schettino allegedly fled his cruise liner.

The ship rolled onto its side in shallow waters off an island on Italy's Tuscan coast on January 13. Seventeen people are confirmed dead and 15 people remain missing while Francesco Schettino is under house arrest and faces possible criminal charges of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship.

Following the jab, CBS host Bob Schieffer seemed caught off guard by Priebus' comment, asking with a laugh: "What did you just say? What did you call President Obama?"

Priebus was defiant in his response.

"I called him Captain Schettino, you know the captain that fled the ship in Italy," Priebus said. "That's our own president who's fleeing the American people and not doing his job and running around the country and campaigning."

    What a comment!
RNC chairman is the caption of Republican Party. Party approval rating going down after he become Chairman actually his ship is sinking
RNC chairman sitting in side watching his passengers fighting, GOP establishment going after Newt equal to RNC chairman watching tea party drowning

The GOP maiking light of the tragity off the coast of Italy by referring to President Obama as the GOP's Capt Schettino just show how out of touch they really are with real people. Because real people lost their lives in that tragity.

WOW!!! What is this guy thinking? Republicans sure are playing their base for being stupid. One thing though, many of their base won't even have a clue as to who this Captain is. Way to go Priebus using a tragedy for political purposes, Republicans have a knack for doing that.

The ship was already wrecked before Obama took over. Most of the job losses in this recession (almost 8 million) happened in 2008 and in the first half of 2009. Republicans used to said that it was unfair to blame Bush for 9/11 because he was on the job for 8 months. Of course, Republicans also blame the 2009 budget, the first budget with a trillion-dollar deficit, on Obama. The budget was passed in 2008, before the 2008 election.

  16. Amazing

How disrespectful his comments are to the families of the people who died on the ship. This is an example of how low the extremists in the republican party will stoop. I hope the families of those who died realize that not Americans are as ignorant and insensitive as this so-called Christian man!

  17. A Southern Lady

Mr. Priebus, the GOP leader, aquainting the shipwreck with President Obama clearly shows where the once-proud Republican party is today. Their candidates, the ones who advertise themselves as members of the "Christian Party of \Family Values", find no truth-stretching too far, no hurtful comment too distasteful no character assination of their fellow candidates too over the top. They have lost all sense of decent behavior and, in no way, reflect the Christian values I hold dear. If one of them would be honest enought to say that Bush left a train-wreck for President Obama and only the President's efforts have halted the country from financial disaster and, that the sole aim of the Republican party, clearly advertised, was to do everything to make the President fail knowing full-well that the country will also fail, then maybe this ounce of honesty might make me have a little respect for a party that I no longer have any respect.

Once again, Republicans prove they have no clue. And that's why the American people currently approve of the job Obama is doing by a more than 2-1 margin over the job Congressional Republicans are doing.

Why does it surprise anyone that the head of the GOP would be using a tragedy to try to bolster his party? You have to remember that they are the party that ran the government in the ground in the first place; now, they are blaming the president for not being able to clean up their mess. He is about as disingenuous as the two front runners for the GOP nomination.

Like Anthony said, "The ship was already wrecked before Pres. Obama took over." In fact, it has been the refusal of the Republican Party that exemplifies the behavior of abandoning ship. And, then they blame the wreck on the rescue workers for not getting it cleaned up fast enough. It is always faster and easier to destroy, than to it is build.

Mr. Steel is a man thati did not agree with but I respect this guy is the evil spon of Rushbo. When the DixieChicks said they were not proud of President Bush the whole republican party boycotted them . Comparing our President to a person arrested for manslaughter it just shows how mush they hate and how the republican party thinks that because they think he is somehow not one of us they can say or do anything . And if I hear this is the same as how the left treated President Bush it just show again how they lie.

If anything, Obama is mre like the first mate left to try and deal with the captain's mess. Like with that ship, his best efforts didn't stop some from dying, but only after Bush and cronies got everything out of the war and Congress they wanted.
It's easy to blame Obama because 3 years have passed. but it is still more logical to say that Bush had 8 years to make the mess and we all know cleanup from a disaster takes longer than the actual event.

Since 2008 they have tried every possible trick in the book to discredit this black president but it does not work and it will not work in this election. God does not like ugly and the Republican/teapartiers are the ugliest I have wintnessed. No wonder their earlier mantra was "I want my country back." Are these the type of leaders Americans need to take our country back to Jim Crow? Isn't that the main reason they are so upset with this president and have congress block him in every way they can.

What a dip3hite this Priebus is The Republican party tried to push the American economy off a cliff for political gain/to hurt6 Obama, but Obama stopped them. Now, despite everything the Republican party is doing to try to stop it, the economy is rebounding. I have still have a private-sector job because of Obama, my adult daughter still has a private-sector job because of Obama.

What a tool. Sorry Reince, the ship already hit the rocks when Obama took over. He came in when the Capt bailed and kept the ship from completely sinking. What Reince hopes is that there is enough ignorant misinformed people out there who will vote for whatever the Republican candidate is because the economy is not improving fast enough. The financial disaster was 40 years in the making and only a fool would think it was going to recover that quick.

Our society is impatient. Instant gratification is what they want. Our country became great because we worked hard and didn't expect instant results. America needs to go back to getting rich slowly.

Actually, if the comparison is to be made, I think Bush is a more likely candidate. He steered the country directly into war, refused to levy the taxes needed to support the effort, oversaw the disaster in the financial systems, watched as millions lost their jobs, and then abandoned ship, claiming his two terms were over and he had no further responsibility. Apt comparison, but the wrong Captain! At best, Obama was the Coast Guard guy on shore, demanding that Bush accept the responsibility.

Just because your angry doesn't mean you can say what ever you want. I'm tired of everyone talking about the Republican anger and allowing irresponsible statements to go unchecked. Yesterday in the NY Post a man commented on an article about a NY residents suicide, saying "he should have taken a couple of Upper West Side liberals with him. Then he would be a hero." You don't make progress by being angry, making threats and offensive comparisons. You make progress by ideas. Obama has had some ideas that have worked and some that haven't, but he is taking this country in the right direction. The Republican front runners have no ideas. They just criticize and then want to go back to the way things were. As an independent I like Obama but would vote for someone if I felt they could further move the country in the right direction. Right now only Obama has ideas that make sense. It's too bad the Republican party has become such a joke. I once looked to them as a serious group of leaders.

Oh, my, Reince (why do all these rich kids all have names like "Reince" and "Mitt"?) . You just created a new round of grass-root contributions to the Democratic Party.

The Republican Party is a complete laughingstock, completely kowtowing to the rich. How much longer will working class Republicans tolerate vapid, spoiled, spineless, pre-adolescent little jerks like Reince Priebus and Mittens Romney?

What is this guy smoking? The GOP Congress has blocked every effort to right the ship after Bush/Cheney ran it aground. President Obama has continued to do everything he can possibly do to work around their selfish, politically motivated obstructionism while the American people are struggling. Their leaders are an ethically challenged blow-hard who refused to accept responsibility for his behavior, a businessman who refuses to admit that he likes Democratic policies, and a religious fanatic who plans to put the American Taliban in charge of controlling women! Priebus, you're a damn fool!

    NOT funny...Captain Flint

...and Priebus is like Captain Flint of a pirate ship, the Walrus, Flint was responsible for burying an enormous treasure (approximately £700,000) on an island located in the Spanish Main. After the treasure was buried, he murdered all six of them and left the corpse of Allardyce with outstretched arms pointing to the location of the treasure.

This sounds exactly like Romney and Gingrich in their dealings with Freddie mac...and the subsequent suffering of the investors who are left to fen for themselves.

No wonder the RNC and the GOP has such historic low ratings in the polls.

It's not funny at all for Priebus to make mockery of such a tragedy, of which the victims, even some Americans, are currently suffering. He should be more sensitive.

It's clear their is NO sympathy for the sufferings of the victims here....

Pubis is a little man. It is as if all the republicans have gone mad. I think they are suffering from an acute form of guilt for running our country into the grinder. If they were to just admit to all of us that they made a big mistake and move on from that in an intelligent, respectful, and helpful manner instead of blaming others and blocking movement, then perhaps we could gain some ground in a true recovery.

FIrst off – we are better off now than how the GOP boy wonder ("W") left us. From day one the GOP attacked everything... literally everything Obama did. Reince Priebus has a very comendable background, based on hard work, intelligence, and discipline. Aside from the hard work, he seems to have sunken with some of those in politics to slinging mud in public, every chance he gets. By now he's seen as a week Tom Hanks look-a-like on some strange kind of potion.

For anyone to so openly, shoutingly disparage anyone in the Office of the President of these United States, especially this far out of the elections, is a poor attempt at distraction from in-house problems at the RNC. A look at the variety of debates show desperation, surely, and not leadership of any sort.

Disgraceful comments from the head of the RNC. Their only goal is to defeat this President. They have denied him the ability to appoint his own people and refused to pass just about anything, even if they thought of it in the first place.
They have used the veto or threat thereof, only used about once every five years in the past, on almost everything. My only hope is that the party nominates Mr Gingrich, which will truly be the end of them. Sad commentary on our country in a time of great need.

A comment like that from the party that steered us in the ditch we're in is halarious. America is sick of the party of NO, the party thats keeps obstructing the healing process from the devestation caused during the Republican/Bush ERA. And now the other 99% suffer beacuse the republicans are bad sports that America elected Obama. They shoud be held in treason for obstucting the healing procress. This is what the Republican Party has become. They caused the shipwreck of the American economy. They refused to help save the passengers – the working class Americans. This will not destroy our country, no matter how hard they pursue their agenda of pandering to the stupid. It's weird they would stay this course, given the certainty of a historic collapse and ultimate disintegration of the republican agenda as a relevant player in national government. I thought it was the Republicans that sunk the ship. We voted in a new Captain who didn't manage to save all the passengers that were "underwater" and IMO is trying, but the old captains crew is loyal to the old captain and want to see the new captain fail at any cost and don't seem to care about the passengers at all. They keep talking about all the passengers that didn't pay their fair share and deserved to die because they were envious of the first class passengers.

It's just standard GOP propaganda to me. I'm sure the Democrats would do the same if the positions were reversed though.

Mr Priebus was just named as one of the people caught communicating on an illegal wireless router set up 25 feet from governor Scott Walker's office when Walker was Milwaukee County exec and Priebus was Wisconsin Republican Chairman.

The problem was that the router was used for illegal campaign work by Walker aides while they were supposed to be doing work for the taxpayers.

I suspect that Mr Priebus will be deposed soon (if he hasn't been already) to see whether he knew that what was happening was illegal.

And this from the Party of George W Bush and Dick Cheney – who ran up our debt to its present level, murdered more than 5000 soldiers in a fraudulent war to grab Iraq's oil. Committed treason and international war crimes on torture. Karl Rove outted a CIA agent because her husband would not lie before Congress about non-existent WMDs. That's a federal crime of 20+ years. Destroyed our economy and the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans. The GOP really thinks we would vote any of them back in office again? They are insane extremists. It the Republican that has jump ship on America ,and not President Obama. The Republican Control do Nothing Congress Isn't Letting him do anything to get America going again. But he Is still getting It done because thing are getting better slowing but getting better and with out Republican help at all. The Republican only care about the Republican Party and not about America or the American People.

Uh..NO. Your precious DUH-BYA was Schettino – HE took the ship onto the rocks, then fled after his term was over. Obama was the Coast Guard captain, trying to get all the republicans responsible back on board, instead of watching from the lifeboats and waiting for America to fail.

'nuff said about the teavangelical repub party...loud-mouthed liars, disrespectful and un-American, ultra-right religious fanatics, etc. This man is the poster child for hate, racism, elitism, and division...through all the rhetoric of the party of "NO" and the ugly face they put on American politics, we Democrats have to do only one very important thing...we have to go to the polls November 6, 2012, encourage our friends and family to do the same, and vote President Obama in for another 4-year term in office. We also need to do everything in our power to sway others to not only vote for the only man for the job, but we all need to get behind any and all Democratic candidates for Congress...we need to clean House, send a message loud and clear, and give President Obama a House and Senate that is forward looking, that is FOR the people, ALL the people, and not just the rich who bankroll the party of "NO" candidates. We WILL take back America from those who would take us all back 50 years!

I believe the GOP has become two parties. Each of there agendas are so different from each other, that to have the losers stand behind the party values and beliefs of the winners, means they will have to "compromise". Imagine that...saying "yes" to something they don't believe.

The use of the Schettino comparison, besides being in poor taste, demonstates an even bigger problem. The "no" mantra has left this party without the ability to imagine solutions or, in this case, to describe the problem.

Respect in America.....R.I.P. It's a sad state of affairs when individuals of apparent importance in American politics can equate the president with such a character as the "runaway ships captain" or wag their finger at him on the tarmac of an international airport. This is really sad.....You don't have to like him.....how about just a little more respect for his office.

There is one constant that occurs with Republicans and conservatives. When there is no controversy or reason to oppose the current administration, they will create one. That does not mean they have to factual, just as long as they create opposition...Obama will be re-elected. A large majority of Americans have made note of the opposition and will vote accordingly. Republicans in the mid term elections ran on "job creation" didn't they? Where are all the jobs? They will remember that fact also..........and they will not blame Obama for business off-shoring funds.

All you Media Matters people can only concentrate on one thing – the reference to the Italian Captain. What is really being said is "where is our Commander in Chief and Chief Executive Officer of the USA" when this country is in dire need of POSITIVE leadership". He is out campaigning and absent from his primary duty. A serious offense in the military the he now feels such affinity for. Also, he has a billion $$$ warchest. Why does he still need to fund-raise. I guess liberals can never have too much money. Oops, excuse me, that just slipped out. How come the Occupiers don't find that offensive but heaven forbid Romney "legally" (not like Geithner) paid 15% tax plus another 6.5 mil to charity.

Outrageous, and like so much else coming out of the Republican party lately, completely perverse. If there were a shipwreck analogy, it would have to one in which the captain valiantly stayed on board while more then 1/2 the crew was busy punching holes into the ship (while putting out the story that the captain was causing the vessel to sink.) Thankfully, the real American vessel, despite Republican obstruction, is still moving forward, albeit haltingly. One can only hope that all those poor souls being successfully hood-winked by the Republican party and being successfully manipulated to vote against their own self-interest, will wake up and see what the real narrative has been for the past 3 years and that the only true objective of the Republican party is to deliver our country and our economy back into the hands of those that really did almost wreck the ship.

I hope the repubs can see that comment for what it was, and act accordingly regardless of who they vote for in the end. I can only hope there are some decent repubs left that can reclaim their party to what it once was. I voted for Reagan because by dad told me to. I was 18...what can I say. Clearly Obama is in charge of this ship, to go along with their comparison. I heard this guy on Face the Nation and am more surprised SChieffer didn't call him on that preposterous accusation, although is not the first time Bob Schieffer let republicans get away with vulgarities. Had that been a democrat doing this kind of nonsensical accusations, Schieffer would have been all over asking him or her to apologize.
Had Obama not been at the helm the republican teapartiers would have succeeded sinking this ship, they have tried in almost every kind of way. Another stupidity this repub chairman said in that program is that Obama had not answered the proverbial 3:00am call, when he knows better than that. Their man W tried to make a circus of military operations, real or imagined but it took pres Obama to effectively pursue this military strategy/offensive against those fanatical groups headed by bin laden and other right wing extremists threat to this country, hiding behind a religious mantle.

First, the United States of America is not going down. Many things in the country will be different after this economical downturn. However, let's look at the whole picture. We fought a war and never budgeted one cent for it. Is it any wonder that we have financial problems? It has been a very difficult three years for many people. Things are beginning to look up.
Just look at what we do have – freedom. This President, like those before him, has kept us a free nation home to people of many different nationalities and religions. Those who have fallen on hard times need to know that we will make this nation stronger and better.

This leader of the Republican Party is crude and rude. He has insulted the President and every other person who believes that we treat all people with respect. We can disagree but that does not open the door to this behaviour which is rampant in the Republican Party right now.

Why do republicons always latch on to tragedy to twist it into something good for them? Because the only way they've gotten this far is by scaring the heck out of all the people who continue to vote for them. Republicons thrive in fear and deception – they are the root of what's evil in America today.

This guy is living in his own fantasy land. Here is another example of a Republican who does not care if his remarks have any basis in reality so long as they cast negative dispersions on the President. The GOP is getting desperate for material if all they can do is lash out against the president with the first thing that pops into their heads. It's like a man falling off a cliff and all he can do to get back at the guy who pushed him off is to hurl any insult that pops into his head as he falls.

That is such a clueless thing for Priebus to say. 8 years with the GOP trying to convince us that GW Bush was a good president, then they try to con us into thinking Palin (or anyone who would pick Palin) is appropriate for higher office. To think that McCain/Palin would have done a better job with the mess this president inherited is nonsense.

The far right is wrong about climate change, they are wrong about trickle down economics, they are wrong to get in the way of healthcare reform while basically doing nothing to make it better, they are wrong that big business needs less regulation and more blindly trusting them (it's what got us in this financial mess actually). America needs to wake up so we can shift the whole conversation away from the Fox News echo chamber, and into a more productive, reality based arena.

Go to any supermarket in any state, red or blue, in the United States. The people coming out are worried about the economy, worried about keeping their jobs, and hoping that things get better. Many are disappointed in President Obama, and are looking for a better alternative. Notbut a very small handful believe he's a sociaist muslim, that he's Captain What's His Name, or that he hates America and what we believe in.
The more that the GOP relies on vapid and snotty insults and avoids presenting the American people with a solid, positive alternative. the more the American people will turn their backs on wild rhetoric and empty leadership. They may not be in love with President Obama, but they'll reelect him resoundingly over the chorus of nonsense the GOP presents.

Wow, this is fascinating. The Republican capacity for what a psychologist would call "transference" continues to astound.

If the United States has ever had a Captain Schettino act-alike as President (after Republican Grover Cleveland), it is George Bush II. George Senior was an OK President. Clinton a great President. Barack Obama didn't run the economy aground, and admittedly, in three years he has not quite recovered it from the shoals Bush left it on. Nor has he yet figured a rational way out of the Bush quagmire in Afghanistan.

But he has gotten us out of Bush's crazy little war in Iraq, which left Iran with greater influence in that country than us. A SEAL team did get bin Laden on Obama's watch, after Bush's failure to put enough troops on the ground in Tora Bora cost us ten years of war in Afghanistan.

So who is really our Captain Schettino? It's fairly obvious. And it's equally obvious that this fellow in charge of the Republican Party is a not case.

The ship analogy absolutely nails it on the head, we had Bush as captain of the U.S.S. Economy for 8 years and he ran the boat aground and severely damaged its hull on the rocks then proudly declared "mission accomplished" tossed the keys to Obama and walked away. Since then Bush's loyal shipmates (the republicans) have publicly blamed the shipwreck on Obama and talked about the debt incurred to the country while not allowing anything to be spent on repairing the hull of the ship, and described him as ineffective at getting the ship back out to sea, despite all of this the Dow is back up over 12,000 and unemployment rates are starting to ease down, now how will they spin that? Everyone of these jokers is for less Government, unless it's a matter of a woman's body, and then the Government and the Church have every right to intrude. Each of them support lower taxation for their corporate overlords, while the illiterate peasants who support them chant in homage – while struggling to put food on their own tables.

The past chair, Michael Steele, a bright spoksperson for the GOP will surely apologize for the statements and hope to show how using the tragic deaths of so many for policital foddder is indecent at the he very least.

This is exactly why I left the Rethuglican Party – they have no sense of shame or honesty! Clinton left Bush with a healthy surplus; Bush wasted it by giving it away to the super rich in the form of tax cuts and so ran the economy into the ground and left a shipwreck. Obama has already created more jobs in his first term that Bush did in his 2 terms – and did this without one lick of help from the Rethuglicans...and this man has the gall to make such a statement???

God will punish these liars and wolves in sheep's clothing big time – they will lose the house and Senate. It is not the nature of God to bless liars, adulterer and fornicators... and all of the idiots who support them will be ashamed when they stand before God...

I think Republican party need to reassess itself to stay as a national party of a country like USA, a role model of democracy for the whole world. Most of the candidates of this year and this guy are far below the standard. Well said by SOUTHERN LADY that how come this kind of political party could be based on Christian values. It is the other way round and always it puzzles me which party should be supported by Christians.

Regardless of one's political persuasion this is shamefully bad statement.

First of all, the use of the word "little" to refer to his president is uncalled for. I am surprised no one comment on this. Furthermore, to say "our little..." is just respectful. It is not meant to sound like "our president" more like "our little boy."

Secondly, the analogy makes no sense! Even if you disagree with his policies Obama is no abandoning ship. He wants a second term. He has not acted in a cowardly way. He has been more militaristic than the left would prefer. He is not the cause of the economy, things were not good before he took office. Even if you think he could have done better, the analogy with a captain who made a mistake and abandoned ship is poor.

Finally, it has been remarked upon before, it is in bad taste to refer to the tragedy in Italy this way for some minor negative political rhetoric.

This is just sick and disrespectful to the families of those lost in the shipwreck. This is also exactly the kind of rhetoric I would expect from today's Republican party, which has totally lost its moral compass (since nautical references seems to be their thing now). He should look to his own party's obstructive behavior in Congress and then ask who the real "Capt. Schettino" is, although I would also strongly recommend that Priebus try to be a little more sensitive and foot-in-mouth stupid. But then again, this is the Republican party we are talking about, so....

Taking his arguments directly to the people of this country is the only way President Obama can overcome a Congress strangled by the GOP's commitment to defeat him at any cost – including the nation's economic health. Republicans cannot compete against Obama's accomplishments - preventing the Bush financial meltdown from becoming a depression, saving General Motors, severely weakening Al Qaeda, and ending our involvement in Iraq. Instead, they've tried to create a "faux Obama" who has done nothing, and is a "failed President"; like this article, such claims are always completely devoid of facts - because there are no facts supporting this narrative. There is nothing but a package of Big Lies. Josef Goebbels would be proud.

Really? Rinse Pubis and all you other Republican yahoos, read the following:

Economy = No Great Depression; 22 straight months of private sector job growth
Security = Out of Iraq; bin Laden gone; al Qaeda greatly reduced as a threat; transitioning out of Afghanistan
Investment = Money here at home for infrastructure, jobs, education, research; rewarding companies that bring back/keep jobs here in the States
Foreign = Improved standing in the world; better cooperation from other nations when needed
Outlook = Positive belief in America, faith in our people, calling on our better natures to stand together and do the hard work to continue moving forward
Fairness = Calling on ALL Americans to do their part and pay their fair share to maintain and sustain our country (with the backing of wealthy folks like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, among others)

The choice is clear: Obama/Biden 2012

Hahaha, so much self righteous indignation being displayed but the dems on this comment... of course an off the cuff remark that slighted another party has never in history ever been made by the DNC or any of it's members.... unless you could Harry Reid, or Nancy Pelosi, or Sheila Jackson Lee, or Maxine Waters.... the list goes on.

Before the DNC or dems cloak themselves in integrity – try looking at the history, I recall a great deal of very harsh language and slander from some very flawed politicos in the dem party against many republican presidents and leaders.

.... save the indignation, it does not suit those trying to pull it off as though they were saints themselves.

To compare our President to that coward is simply disgusting! It proves there is no depth to which the Republicans will not stoop. Seventeen lives were lost and that man will face trial for any number of maritime infractions. He is a symbol of cowardice and betrayal.
All Pres. Obama has done is keep us safe, (shot the pirates holding the Capt. of Maersk Alabama; killed Bin Laden and many, many of his top aides. Gotten us out of Itaq, did a great job with Libya.
The economy would have responded better by now if he had received ANY support from the GOP. But they did the UNPATRIOTIC thing and obstructed his efforts and they screwed us all.
He has brought our foreign policy ahead by light years after the disaster these clowns left. And this is the complete lack of respect which the show the man?? They should all rot !! Slowly........These Republicans are a VERY small minded crew. And for that they will loose and loose BIG!!

And this is why the Republicans will not win the Presidential election: cheap shots about the President "fleeing the American people" then likening it to the terrible tragedy of the Italian ship that sank. This is what happens when a group like the RNC, chooses a no nothing hack as their "voice". They made the mistake with Michael Steele and now with this yocal. It just shows how scared the GOP is that they put this poor excuse for a spokesman in charge. How dare he compare the President with someone who may be accused of murder. It just shows how low the GOP has sunk...but can it sink any lower with some of the other shipmates, Rush "God I am ugly" Limbaugh, Laura "I am not really a man, even though I sound like one" Ingraham, Ann "I will not look my age" Coulter, Sean "I even look as arrogant as I am" Hannity and Bill "we are really dumb" O'Reilly! Priebus is as sick as his Party has become. There is no comparison and when someone is as stupid as Priebus the rest of the Party should speak up and show that they have not lost all integrity. The President has never abandoned the ship of State. He may not be sailing it smoothly but he stays with it. He also has been in attendance at every major crisis or catastrophe we have had. He has conducted himself with a lot of dignity. The Ship's Capt lacked that attribute. Lastly, no one with a shred of decency makes light of something as horrible as the Costa going down. He was using Schettino as a point of comparison – not making light of people's deaths. 95% of the comments below whine about the context of the point of reference but don't argue against the point that Obama is in fact turning his back on his responsibilities as President to campaign for another term. He has essentially given up on trying to pass legislation through a divided Congress – something that a strong leader and mediator should be able to do – but that should be no suprirse given that passing legislation would actually hurt his campaign message: that it is one party's fault that no agreement can be reached. Wasn't his message in his first campaign that HE was the ONE who could UNITE this country? All I see happening in THIS campaign is him throwing the conservative portion of the country under the bus. Finally, I don't see anyone here complaining about how the liberals / liberal media compared Bush to Hitler. Does that make light of the Holocaust?

Just when I thought it was safe to start donating to the RNC again – seriously, do national political leaders even think about what they are saying before they start to speak? It happens on both sides, and it is really amazing. How much sense does it take for a national party leader to know that it's inappropriate to use an ongoing tragedy to illustrate a political point. About as much sense as it would take for a vice president to avoid using a stereotypical foreign accent on camera, I suppose (or off camera, for that matter). Our government needs a reset button.

This is the problem with conservatives these days. Always over-reaching in their complaints about Obama. Instead of taking on Obama for his real record, they have to invent an alternate reality. It kind of has the opposite effect of what is intended. It makes it at least look like Obama is actually doing a good job, but Republicans have to make up goofy criticisms just to say something. Not that Obama was able to or has done wonders, but those who talk like they have all the answers, are they willing to say if they can't fix it they will give up everything? No! Once they get their new job, they will have already forgot all the crap they have thrown, and the promises they have made. I believe that Obama is honest and trying to find the answers. And the wisdom of 4 years of battle and conflicts has harden and toughen him up. Also, since the Rep. know he will not then be able to run for another term, they will no longer need to bash him at every turn and maybe they will be able to make some decisions that include the majority middle of politics. Time will tell.

This is the kind of foolishness that we are supposed to use to help us make a decision to cast our vote for whomever his GOP end putting on the ballot. I would appreciate any serious effort to define this as anything other than contempt for the electorate that it is.

Yeah, Obama really seems to be jumping ship. More like, he's on deck, trying to save the passengers (the United States) by issuing orders, but the crew (Republicant's) are mutinying, determined to kill everyone on board as long as they get the captain too.

Has any other president ever been hounded to release his birth certificate? Has any other president been interrupted wail addressing congress by a congressman shouting something? Has any president ever had a Governor of a state get in his face wagging her finger at him when they were so pose to accompany the president to an event that the president was speaking at? Republicans wont you to think that Obama is some how substantially different from all other presidents when in reality he is just like them, just look at his handling of being commander in chief, most everyone would say he has done well, but in many ways (Guantanamo ext) his is more or less the same. For his domestic policies he got some big things done but they were more or less in line with what has been talked about for a long time, they were also passed on partisan lines, which never happens-jk. At a certain point with all of this you have to realize that it is almost all about racism.

They keep complaining because the President is campaigning during a campaing year... they would love for him not to campaign because they think it would help their chances... right now i dont think he really needs to campaign because they (republican candidates) are doing a wonderful job at convincing the people why we still need President Obama!

If Obama is like the ship captain...after ridding the world of a horde of Al qaeda leaders and Bin Laden, and improving the economic mess that the last Republican monkeys created in America...

Then Bush must be like the village idiot who came from a family who could not tell who the enemy was until it was too late...and then stayed friends with the enemy's family after they found out. OH wait....that actually is Bush in real life.

This is just part of the ongoing Republican strategy. After all, "people are generally stupid", or so some people might believe. This is just their way of appealing to the "ignorant masses". Say stupid, hateful things like this and you'll attract a whole bunch of people–all stupid and hateful themselves–perhaps a huge bunch to your side. The Republicans already hate the media calling it liberal. The media is based at its root on literature, meaning you have to be literate in order to be involved in it. The type of people the Republicans seem to be trying to appeal to tends to leave people like this out. The Republicans hate college professors cause they're "liberal". Whole college campuses are liberal. Pretty soon, they'll be hating everyone with an IQ over 60, as they'll all be liberal because the GOP has collected everyone else all on their side.

As an independent with a fair number of very partisan, conservative, Republican friends, I've observed a big problem with some Republicans. When they make these sort of over the top and frankly, lame, jokes, they think they're being clever and they don"t understand why normal Americans are laughing at them and not laughing with them. On the other hand, I observed similar behavior from some of my more liberal friends during the Bush years (although for whatever reason, lberal cracks tend to be a little funnier and a little more rooted in reality that conservative jokes).

An apt comparison, since the policies Obama has tried have failed all over the world, just like this captain thought he could get away with sailing the same course tried in the past. I've had an epiphany about liberalism: if you read their talking points closely, it's all about how the rest of us need to think more like them, in essence be re-eductaed, much like what happens in dictatorships and communism. They are anti-freedom.

I know this man makes his living by disparaging anything that isn't Republican right-wing orthodoxy but this comparison is repulsive as well as false. The Italian captain crashed the ship and then fled. Obama came aboard after six years of Republican control and Republican policies crashed the ship. Obama has tried to right the ship while the right wing in Congress has sat on their hands and done nothing. The reason the comparison this man makes is because it is blatantly false and this man either is too shallow or too cynical to care.

Just for a moment consider this. What if the Repulican Party does not want to be in power? Would you blame them if they didn't want to take the responsibility of America right now? Look and analyze their actions through this lens. Well, what if the Democratic party is not too keen either. It then becomes the classic scenario where the game is passing around the ball until the music stops. So, the loser is the one who ends up with the ball. Are we all playing the same game? One thing is common, everyone wants money and thats the bottomline. You do whatever it takes. The poorest earn their living by cleaning the rich man's mess. Thats the law everywhere.

It is so sad to watch the level to which the Republicans have sunk in their hatred of Obama. The Good Ship America was wrecked by Captain Bush and his crew. The Republican congress and Republican senate with a few exceptions are the ones who abandoned ship by refusing to do their jobs. Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face.
It appears that they are so blinded by hatred of the president that instead of helping to bale water, they are punching holes in the buckets. You see, they are so intent on drowning Obama that they will sink the ship with all aboard just to achieve that goal. How sad and shortsighted.

Why do you have to remind us again and again that GOP is a party full of people without grey matter. Not only we in US but the whole world knows. We learnt it when Bush was president. We learnt it when Sarah Palin was going gung ho (shooting from her hip and mouth simultaneously and not to be seen when action is actually happening), we learnt it during all the debates and actions in trying to block the Obama administration, we have learnt it now once again in the Primaries where all the dirty linen is getting washed in public.
Obama has been able to get the country out of a very difficult and trying situation. But it requires brains to understand that which unfortunately GOP guys do not have. So Sir, go to your ranches and tend the weed and animals there. That is all you guys can do.

It's reasonable for people to have disagreements on policies, so it would be okay for him to say that he believes the President's policies are not good for the country. But to equate the President's behavior with an act of cowardice is totally absurd. If the guy can't intelligently add to the political discourse, he should just keep his stupid mouth shut. Instead, like too many Republicans, he will do and say anything to hurt the President, even if it hurts the country, since their avowed goal and only priority is to defeat Obama.

Blah, blah, blah...more baseless accusations and diatribe from the Republicans. I get tired of the hypocricy of Washington. If a Democratic President campaigns to win his next term, the Republicans say he's ignoring his duties. If it's a Republican President, it's the other way around. It must be nice to be blind to your own parties faults.

News Flash, politicians: We're not that stupid. We can see right through your petty, selfish games that BOTH of you play. Only people that are drinking the kool-aid from one side or the other believe anything that either political party says anymore. Priebus had a chance here to stop this trend and be the better person by acknowledging that Presidents on both sides campaign for their next term and that it's perfectly normal, but he blew it.

Fleeing the ship? You must mean the Republicans who sole purpose the last 3+ years was to find a way to defeat the president. Nevermind that the US economy was in trouble or that millions of people were out of work or that you caused it. You're just concerned about you're wealthy puppeteers getting more money for themselves. Bush cut taxes, cut capital gains tax and let corporate america repatriate $360 billion. Where are the jobs the American people were promised. The Republican answer to the job situation today? Why it's to cut taxes, eliminate the capital gains tax alltogether and letting corporate american repatriate $1-$2 trillion! This love affair that you Republicans have with making the wealthy more wealthier in order to create jobs will be your downfall not in just the Presidential election but in other elections as well.

I think that these tactics are driving undecided and independent voters right back to obama. All of this sound byte nonsense and stunts like gov brewer in AZ, it all looks like silliness. The republicans do not have the look or feel or record of "saviors" to the dying middle class. They all treat the sober and serious business of restoring prosperity for the "rest of us" as game. For those who believe ABO, this works for them. Those kinds of voters are not demanding a plan from the republican party just another warm body to take over for obama. That's not enough for this country. We need an upgrade at the position, not just another butt to sit in the chair in the WH.

Its interesting: I finally spotted a comment equating liberalism with communism this morning, and how liberals supposedly indocrinate people. Well, after watching the Right spew their hate over the years and set litmus tests for being loyal to the country, I have to conclude the Right knows far more about indocrination than the Left ever would. Everything they say uses the same buzz words, like liberty and freedom, or they use a convenient tragedy to try to divert attention away from their lack of solutions and obstructionism. Its amazing that they ignore their own history and create an alternative reality where only they ahve the Truth, and the rest of us are jsut too stupid or devious to accept taht we must obey their words. They believe in being Ideologically Correct, in spite of all evidence to the contrary. By the way, I hope Preibus has his lawyers ready for when he gets called in the Walker Corruption Probe.

Polls showed that after watching The State of The Union address, people were asked if they felt President Obama was working for the American people, and the percentage went way up there. The problem with our country is the God-awful Repub. party. Just look at what is currently going on with them. The majority of them are total hypocrites. They have caused the problems in this country since former Pres. Clinton's term ended. They don't give a "tinkers damn" about the welfare of U..S. citizens, except for those who line their pockets; that's obvious. Every time the president mentions big business should pay their fair share of taxes, the Repubs alway say "Oh, no, that would be a "job-kliller." Common sense is people need jobs, but the other part of that sentence....businesses need workers, too, for without them there would not be a business for them. Thinking Pres. Obama should stop campaigning....they wish! And the president is far from being a wrecked ship!

They give him less respect than they did Bill Clinton at the heightg of the Monica Lewinsky affair. They are a primarily white elite trying to hold onto yesteryear. I know because I grew up in the same area that Prebius is from.

Lame metaphor, Priebus - I don't see how America, with rising employment, increasing growth, bullish market, and great hope for our future, is ANYTHING like that ship. Again, shows how the Republican leadership either doesn't know those facts, or is simply lying to pretend these trends don't exist. One may want and vote for a different path, but to compare our nation to this tragic ship is quite a stretch.

You know, I really don't care that the GOP can unite. Because they AREN'T the majority. And if they keep making stupid comments and keep up the imbecilic, adolescent behavior, the lies, and the sheer ignorance and stupidity they have come to represent, there aren't many independents that will wish to associate with the dregs of society at their core.

This is why I can't take Republicans seriously. They say ridiculous things like this. Even if you don't like Obama or think he's doing the wrong thing, claiming that he's running from problems or abandoning ship is ludicrous. Republicans simultaneously want to claim that Obama is running roughshod and making too many changes and leading us to "socialism"... then they want to say that he's hiding from problems and doing nothing.

Just shut up, Republicans. Even if I'm not satisfied with Obama, you're definitely no alternative. You've become a party of lunatics who base everything on lies and propaganda, and your followers are dangerously unquestioning. You do not deserve to be leading the country. Hopefully a 2012 defeat will marginalize the far-right for good.

Ever notice how all the detractors of the president trumpet a laundry list of things he is doing to destroy the country. But, when asked a simple question like "What are the things on the list?" you never get an answer or you're given something that was passed in the previous administration (and can easily be proven) they either call names or completely divert to another topic.

Whereas Reince Priebus is the Republicans' Captain Who The Heck Are You Again? Supposedly the guy presided over some Republican tidal wave in Wisconsin... which was apparently so terrible that they're now holding a recall election to get rid of the governor he worked to elect. He tied the RNC to the Tea Party, which was a complete failure in the Mid-Terms. Sure, they picked up seats and took the House, but most of their supposed Tea Party candidates were loons who couldn't get elected, like that chick in New Hampshire who had to make a campaign ad denying that she's a witch.

This guy is a coward. He knows they can't beat the real Obama, so their method to defeating President Obama is to create this fictional character to run against when it comes to his policies and character. The GOP has distorted is presidential record, stripped away from him his citizenship, collegiate accomplishments, and now they compare him to the coward Italian captain! During the general election, Independents are going to get more exposure to the candidates and their records, and to some its going to be a wake up call when they realize some of the accomplishments that this President has made. If Mitt or Newt managed to attract voters based on some false reality of the President, they may respond negatively in voting for the Republican party.

The Republican party used to be the party of fiscal responsibility and business growth. Republican politicians used to try to keep government out of the personal lives of people. Republican politicians used to remember that the USA is a Federation of States – and the states are supposed to govern at a low level (while the Federal government was supposed to hold things together).

Today, it seems that Republican means "Christian far right." It feels like Republican means "obstruct, deny, destroy." It feels like Republican means "un-elect Obama at all cost – don't worry about solid policy and sound governing." It seems like Republican means "destroy the hopes of the many to benefit the few."

I'm really sad. The USA is an awesome place that used to be balanced between moderate Republicans, moderate Democrats, and just enough third-party folks to keep things on balance.

I'm a Democrat who sorely misses REAL Republicans – the ones who were part of balance in government...

When words no longer have meaning, as is the case in a post-Gingrich GOP world, words are nothing more than weapons. Truth is irrelevant, a casualty of ambition and fear. This is the context of Priebus' comments. Like the dog that revels in licking it's privates, he made the connection to Schettino because he can.

If he wants to go down that path I suggest other possible connections. Priebus is the Joseph Goebbels of the GOP. Or perhaps the Casey Anthony of the GOP. How about the Jerry Sandusky of the conservative movement?

I think a better comparison would be with our illustrious, intelligent, articulate (not) former Pres. Bush in this case. I think Mr. Priebus' smug, limpy smile will fade fast when he drops out of the 1%...

I can't believe this is what Priebus thinks is being witty! For this statement alone he should be fired from being the chairman of the GOP. Such blatant disrespect for the loss of life, disrespect for the grieving families, disrespect for those injured and traumatized by the ship sinking.

But then again I guess that's what makes him perfect for the job! The GOP doesn't really care about people, they only care about corporations!

This is a pattern really. A Repulican says somthting borderline to stupid that the general media (and moderate to left people) will get outraged about. Meanwhile, the fact that center&left are pissed further energizes their base. People in comment sections repeat the stupid statements ad nausium – in a netative way. However, the statement gets repeated 1000s of times – getting it higher in the web ratings (the fact that one says: the guy is a moron to have said – is lost in the ratings) Then everybody gets upset about this and the focus is off of the Republicans. Seems to happen every few days...

The real Captain Schettino would be George Bush, of course. He is the one who steered the economy into the rocks and then was planning his own political rehabilitation strategy as the economy was sinking.

Walter, its not a question of "if", but " by how much". The only reason we have had gridlock is that a Democrat in the White House runs counter to the alternate reality the GOP lives in, where cutting revenue and increasing spending results in a balanced budget: thats what the GOP has advocated for over 30 years, even though they are incapable of cutting things they support. Its obvious the GOP love fiction, since dealing with the real world, with all its inconvenient problems and issues is beyond their ideology/theology. Thier answer? Create a world where the president is plotting to destroy the world, the Democrats are both devious and incompetant, and where millionaires with offshore accounts are heroic-NOT!

This is a disgusting lack of respect for the President of the United States. We are all Americans first and foremost.

Clearly the Republicans have nothing constructive to offer the American people this year. Somehow, I think they are going to need something a little more compelling than this character. Obama may not be a superstar, but he offers a lot more than these people.

I am so sick of these Repubs coming up with all these derogatory names for our President. When I heard him say this on TV yesterday I was livid as it was his party that caused the economy to crash and President Obama is the one steering it back on track. They are getting desperate and trying anything that will stick. President Obama will be re-elected!!

Just like Gingrich sent out a list of "key words" to plant in the lemmings of their party's heads this guy is continuing with the words of failed economy – when it is getting stronger, losing jobs when they are slowing coming back. If you believe and use those words to continue the ludicrious republican patter you lose credibility among those of us who can see the facts.

This shows the level that the Republican Party has sunk to. If you want to make this kind of comparison a more appropriate one would be Reince Priebus and Joseph McCarthy who accused many honest Americans of being communists in the 40s and 50s. Priebus leads a party that likes to call people names based on their paranoia just like McCarthy. Thank goodness they don't have the power that McCarthy did. Americans need to make sure that they never get that power so they cannot reinvent a era based on some of our ugliest history. The politics of dirty one liners can, has and is doing damage to this country. Stop it now. Don't let it get out of control again. Vote for intelligence over red meat.

RNC Chairman Priebus's stupid, insensitive analogy is an outrage. In obvious contrast is President Obama's classiness, intelligence, and devotion to the betterment of our society. Obama continues to impress me every day. When he was introduced at the State of the Union address, I thought to myself, "Whatever the Republicans do or say, they can't take this away from you. You are our President. " Obama makes me proud again to be an American. The Grand Old Party isn't so 'grand' anymore. Oftentimes, their behavior is vindictive, selfish, and mean-spirited. This may help re-elect a President I admire, but they shame themselves and embarrass me in front of the rest of the world.

Really? Obama is Captain Schettino? Wasn't Bush at the helm when the ship began to sink? Didn't Obama board the sinking ship and try to plug it with stimulus packages that brought back our car industry and reversed the downward trend in economic growth? Isn't America growing again? Last time I checked, it was. No thanks to the GOP, whose only accomplishment is to say no to everything. And shame on you for this type of rhetoric. Why don't you spend some time on proposing solutions that have a good chance at obtaining a consensus in both houses, rather then pathetic extreme proposals that you know are dead on arrival.

I find it interesting that the party of "Christian Values" continually shows that they aren't Christian at all! I would say they are more like Darwinists with no conscience. His comment about the tragedy in Italy exemplifies their values and the lows that they will sink to for their own ends. The really sad part is that many people buy this rhetoric hook line and sinker. I agree with many of the Republican ideals, but I have yet to see a Republican in congress or running for president be an example of those. And this rat race of an election is just getting started. Sad!

You are all crazy. Very typical response, blame it all on GW. Obummer has taken no responsibility at all during his presidency. He has either blamed GW or just ignored it all together. Some say it's congress' fault. Obummer had a democrat controlled congress and still couldn't get a budget passed, let alone any other legislation that could help the situation. We need to shrink the government, not grow it. We need to get people doing for themselves instead of the government taking care of everyone. When you don't have to work for what you have, you stop respecting what you have and you become a drag on society. That is what Obummer has created, a bunch of slugs dragging the economy down the pipe.
