Newt's moon colony: What would it cost?

New York (CNNMoney) - Newt Gingrich wants to build a permanent colony on the moon and, if his dream is fully realized, the price tag could be huge.

The Republican presidential candidate has repeatedly defended his goal to establish a "permanent lunar colony on the moon" by the end of his second-term as president - if he is elected. Gingrich said he wants to eventually turn the moon into a bustling tourist destination, and hopes to use it for commercial purposes, including science and manufacturing.

How does this plan work with his reduced tax rate?

If you were to take the Billions of dollars from Unemployment and put it towards a man in space, then you would still come off saving money, and America could once again be adventuring into the Final Frontier with Hopes and Dreams, True Hopes and Dreams, With Real Change

The real conservative dream, though, is to finally return to their home on Planet Wingnut.

We need to get our finances in order before committing to any long term space project. But once that is achieved, having a great national project like this is a good thing. It will return much more than it costs and is a very unifying effort. It builds national pride and prestige. I can see why the lefties don't like the idea.

A proven fact nothing on the moon except highly radioacte dusk. We should be puting our marble in a near by solar system with an un-inhabit Earthlike planet to colonize. Bless.

Rudy, do I really need to explain the difference between cutting off our ability to supply an existing manned space station before we have a new generation of vehicle to accomplish the mission, and a decades long commitment of hundreds of billions of dollars??? The BILLIONS that Obama is WASTING on is green energy scams could have easily kept NASA flying. But Obama finds it a higher priority to funnel huge sums to green energy scams being created by his fund raisers.

Ummmm... you do realize that a voyage of that distance (if we even knew what direction to go) with today's technology would take a few thousand years of interstellar travel, right?

Mr. Gingrich suffers from the same thing that ailed Sarah Palin and Rep. Bachmann. That is speaking before thinking. The country needs to save money and spend money in the right areas. Going to the moon and establishing a base at this time is stupid. To pay for this we should call it the "Newt's Moon Tax"

Right. We need to spend untold amounts of money on moon colonies, and let a few more people here slip through the cracks. No one here needs food, shelter, clothing, or hope for the future. What every red blooded American, wants and needs is a chance to colonize a lifeless orb, that illuminates the earth at night, during certain periods of time during the month. I'm sure this, and this alone takes priority over living indoors, or eating regular meals.
