Trump to make 'major' announcement

(CNN) - Donald Trump, who once flirted with a White House bid, is now reasserting himself in the presidential race, saying he'll make a major announcement in Las Vegas Thursday just two days before Nevada's caucuses.

Could it be an endorsement? Trump's office, as well as Newt Gingrich's campaign, responded to questions swirling over the announcement Wednesday night–and neither team shot down speculation that the reality TV star may make his pick.

The television station KLAS in Las Vegas, a CNN affiliate, reported Wednesday Trump will back Gingrich.

Talking to reporters in Reno, the former House speaker said he was unaware of Trump's plans.

"I have no idea what the Donald is going to do," Gingrich said. "He is always interesting, and I don't know of anybody who does a better job of getting attention by announcing that he will presently announce something."

The candidate added that he had had little contact with Trump since the two held a high-profile December meeting in New York.

A Trump spokesman also responded to questions about an endorsement, simply telling CNN: "I would be there."

Trump will make the announcement Thursday at Trump International Hotel and Tower in Las Vegas. He's scheduled to arrive in the city late Wednesday night.

The announcement is slated to "pertain to the presidential race," according to a statement from his office.

Phony Trump endorses a phony candidate. That's certainly worth something. Don't ask me what.

Vegas would be the perfect place for him to announce his run for presidency; afterall, what happens in vegas, stays in vegas.

Nothing Trump does in the political field matters to anyone on either side unless he gives a candidate a big donation to pretend he is sane for a short time.

I hope Donald launches his own independent campaign. The GOP race has lost much of it's comic value since Bachmann and Cain dropped out and Trump would be just the ticket.

This is more like a “major” snore than a “major” announcement. But I’m sure whatever he does, he’ll be very proud of himself.

Hey, Donald, we're waiting with baited breath for your next "big" announcement – maybe it will be what your detectives found out about President Obama's birth certificate in Hawaii, huh?. Let's hope his announcement is that he endorses Gingrich – what with Palin, Perry, and Cain's endorsements, that would be the final nail in the coffin of Gingrich's run for office.

Trump's opinion counts almost as much as the has-been from Alaska. Why does any legitimate news outlet even give this guy airtime anymore is beyond me. He totally destroyed his credibility when the President's Long Form birth certificate was proven to be a more legitimate document than the hunk of paper Trump presented.

Well, Donald, the nation is still waiting for your revealation about the President's birth certificate, and still waiting for you to release your taxes from 2010.

Like I said, no credibility anymore.
