Gingrich trumped by 'the Donald'

Las Vegas (CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich got trumped by "The Donald" in Las Vegas when the mogul decided to throw his support behind Mitt Romney Thursday.

Both White House hopefuls are campaigning in Nevada ahead of the state's Republican caucuses on Saturday. Gingrich's two morning events – a speech at Xtreme Manufacturing and a meeting with Hispanic business leaders – were largely overshadowed by the news that Trump was endorsing Romney, his chief rival, on the Vegas strip.

Most in the Republican field had been courting the millionaire mogul and reality television host. Gingrich met with him in New York City in early December.

But as Gingrich was checking out Xtreme's manufacturing equipment he dismissed the significance of a Trump endorsement, expressing amazement to reporters that he was getting so much attention.

Meanwhile, Gingrich continued on Thursday to take something Romney said about poor people out of context to feed a narrative about his wealthy presidential opponent.

Romney was talking about how he would help the middle class in a CNN interview Wednesday when he said he was not "concerned about the very poor" because there is a safety net in place for them but added, "if there are holes in it, I will work to repair that."

Speaking to supporters and employees in the chilly manufacturing plant, the former speaker used another analogy to describe how he would help lower income Americans.

"I really believe that we should care about the very poor unlike Gov. Romney," Gingrich said Thursday. "Both Gov. Romney and Barack Obama seem to believe that a quote – safety net – is all the poor need. I don't believe that. What the poor need is a trampoline so they can spring up and quit being poor."

Endorsements in today’s political landscape are as relevant as the horse and buggy are to modern transportation. There was a time when interfacing with candidates was limited to a select few. These days we have 24×7 exposure to the candidates and there is no need to depend on the opinion of others. Time to let this archaic practice go the way of the betamax…

If one ever feels the need to ‘court Trump’ it is time to seriously examine your criteria for what is desirable.

Who cares about Trump ..? His endorsement not only does not mean a thing but will fire back at ,Romney.... JUST BECAUSE THE DONALD SAID I will not run as a third party if Romney is the nominee.
Trump is a dem supporter of Obama , Clinton and a liberal.... By endorsing Romney , he knows that it will make Obama stronger. ..... To defeat Obama the Republican conservatives need a bully ... with political experience in both parties and a good debater.... Newt is the man for the job.

Rest assured that Trump sees Any endorsement more for his own benefit than Romney`s.

In fact, Trump is so flaky, Mitt should have paid Trump NOT TO ENDORSE him; he probably will make out better. Maybe that`s DonAld` new money making scheme. – extort "protection/Mafia-like" money from candidates to not sully their political runs.

Trump is only trying to get his own name back in front of the TV cameras and the idiots in the media are oblidging him.

NEwt is such a liar; he doesn't give 2 squirts about the very poor, and is running for office based on taking statements out of context. What a sheep dip.

From the article – “What the poor need is a trampoline so they can spring up and quit being poor.” And if a frog had wings… We need detailed and well thought out solutions, not bumper sticker slogans. And by the way, sir it is PRESIDENT Obama.

Obama, Romney, and Gingrich have it wrong on the poor. The poor don't need a safety net or a trampoline to get out of poverty. They need rocket boosters!

Trump's endorsement may not mean much in a positive way, that is few people who don't like Romney will change their mind because of Trump. However, for Gingrich this is another nail in the coffin of his campaign, and an embarassment.

Great day for the American history, great day for those liberals because this is the day the Republicans helped in re-electing Barrack the Great.

Of course Trump endorsed Romney. I'm sure they have similar agreements concerning the issues. One issue I'm certain they agree that neither one if them are concerned about the poor. After all the poor has that safety net to land on. Am I correct Romney?

Just bc Romney says it was out of context doesn't mean that it actually is. I read and listened to the whole passage a couple of times. He says he is focused on 95% of Americans, however, close to 40% of America lives in legal poverty. To Romney $300k income for speaker fees is not a lot of money. To him, you and me are "very poor".

Newt is pretty disingenious saying he cares about the poor! Here's how I know: He's rich & he's a Republican! He can't really differentiate himself from his party & says too many strange things (moon colony?) to take seriously! Romney is the only candidate the GOP-TP has & now he's been saddled w/the endorsement of an equally out of touch multimillionaire! Average Americans (aka the majority) see this for what it is: Another 4 for President Obama! Obama/Biden 2012!!

Why would anyone want Trump's endorsement after he thoroughly disgraced himself by being one of the dim bulb "birthers"?

Maybe the poor should peddle their influence to Freddie Mac for $1.6 million - then they wouldn't have to be poor any more.
