NYC mayor gives Planned Parenthood $250,000 matching grant

NEW YORK (CNN) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is giving a $250,000 matching gift to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America to help make up for the loss of funding from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, his office said Thursday.

"Politics have no place in health care," the mayor said in a written statement. "Breast cancer screening saves lives, and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care. We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way."

Planned Parenthood should not be funded with taxpayer dollars. I am definetly Pro Life and it sickens me to think that my tax dollars fund abortion. Let these fools who don't mind killing innocent children pay for it.

Class Act by Mayor Bloomberg. He's absolutely right. Politics shouldn’t play a role when it comes to the health of women.

Well very good Bloomberg.. you have just proven, as have others in the last day or 2 that PP doesnt need tax payer funding, nor do they need funding from the Komen foundation... so whats the problem here.. if a coporation no longer wants to give money to a cause they do not believe in, than that is their choice... So thank you mayor for proving that PP does not need all the funding it has lost... it can just recieve donations from people willing to have thier money go to killing babies.. plain and simple..

Yes.. because the "best healthcare system in the world" would keep 30 some odd million people off insurance roles; unlike any other industrialized nation. USA is also the only industrialized nation without a permanent public option where all can be covered. In fact read about how our employer healthcare system started... It was a pure accident, was not understood and now we are left with a horrible system that was never by or for the people it serves; it was just an accident that now must be corrected for all American to have access.

Also... read a book Truth... The Submerged State... and then tell me that we have a great system.... and make a new posting name.. im starting to ignore everything you write because when i see your name... I laugh.

Donate to OWS, Bloomberg, and maybe we'll take you more seriously. Thanks for the donation, though.

Congratulations. You are an honorable and decent man. Planned Parenthood serves many women, including many poor women, and it is vital that this necessary service be continued. To all the far-right religious nuts who have brought about the de-funding of Planned Parenthood – hang your heads in shame.

rych – It's called hypocrisy in the case you don't know.
If Komen Foundation doesn't want to give money to PP it's their right, no problem here. But say that PP 'doesn't fit' their qualifications anymore WITHOUT making it plain and clear what 'qualifications' they are talking about, as if no one knew what they were..., and thus play the moral watchdog, the 'most virtue one', at the same that they are being too COWARD to stand by what they believe in...
    That's hypocrisy.
    Got it?

Truth... you remind of an old (prohibited) joke I read that was very popular in the USSR.
There were two big newspapers in USSR, 'Pravda' ('truth') and Izvestia ('news', 'reports' or the likes), but you would NEVER find any 'Izvestia' in the 'Pravda' or any 'Pravda' in the 'Izvestia' pages...

Your posts are but the same, devoided of actual facts or truths, just propaganda...

@Kat – people like you amaze me. You're so concerned about YOUR tax dollars going to abortions but could care less about YOUR tax dollars killing children in illegal wars that we started as I'm assuming you backed Bush & his Iraq experiment. Your priorities are truly mixed up. As with anything in life, if you don't like it, then don't do it, but if you truly believe in freedom than it is a woman's choice as to whether or not she has an abortion as it is the law of the land that it is legal to do so.

No healthcare system should be considered the best when it has deliberately denied people access to the best care possible. I've had enough members of my own family, including my son, had their claims denied because an accountant using an actuarial table determines who gets covered and who does not. The reforms Obama passed with no GOP support were largely GOP ideas: if the reforms fail to produce the desired results, its because one party lacks the will to deal with the issue and take ownership of ideas they came up with. If that comes to pass, it will be yet another example of how conservatives are utterly irresponsible with the effects policies they originated, and how they lack the will to see anything through that does not give them a return on investment their limited minds can understand. Truth, are you reading this?

So, rych, you jsut believe in making their lives a living hell after they are born? Or are you a fan of the Newt Gingrich orphanage system? Will you be giving to Operation Rescue, or do you just plan to shoot abortion providers in churches with the love of Jesus in your heart?

kat, what about the cancer screenings and other services they provide? The government has also funded places like Marcus Bachmann's clinic, which ash not basis in science or mental health, so shoudl they stop funding garbage mental health clinics like his when they are clearly not based in good science, but religion?

Good for him. Finally somebody with cojones to tell that idiot from komen to take a leap from a tall building.
This same ceo, or whatever she is to the komen foundation ran for a rethug position and unless I came into the room too late to rally see her I believe the she devil from AK spoke on her behalf. If that is true that is all you need to know about this woman . . . . another loser.
From now on any money for breast cancer in our house is going directly to Planned Parenthood.

I too, am sending a check to Planned Parenthood. The religious zealots can ply their intolerance elsewhere. Bad move by Komen Foundation. They are losing and will lose a lot of support.
