Gingrich: Romney didn't deserve congrats

(CNN) – In some of his harshest words yet, Newt Gingrich explained Friday why he didn't call rival Mitt Romney after the former Massachusetts pulled a decisive Florida primary victory earlier in the week.

Pointing to Romney's post-South Carolina campaign strategy, which turned noticeably negative against the former House speaker, Gingrich said Romney didn't earn any kudos.

"They outspent me five to one to quote destroy Newt Gingrich?" Gingrich said in an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." "You know, I think that doesn't deserve congratulations. I think that's reprehensible, I think it's dishonest, and I think it's shameful."

Gingrich took heat over not making the call after Romney's win on Tuesday, given that the former Massachusetts governor had congratulated Gingrich for his South Carolina win just 10 days prior.

Meanwhile, Romney's other rivals, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, both picked up the phone on Tuesday.

"The other candidates all called, but I guess Speaker Gingrich doesn't have our phone number," Romney said Wednesday on NBC's "Today."

While campaigning ahead of Nevada's Saturday caucuses, Gingrich has largely maintained that Romney's full-throated attack strategy in Florida would come back to haunt him, arguing that voters prefer a positive campaign.

"Pretty hard to see how somebody is going to negatively carpet-bomb their way to the nomination," Gingrich said Friday on CNN. "Pretty hard to see how that nomination is going to be worth much if that's all they've got to show for themselves."

The candidate said he had no regrets over not making the traditional phone call.

"I feel very comfortable with exactly what happened after Florida," Gingrich said.

The Republican party continues to embarrass itself. All these bozos are doing is ensuring that Obama is re-elected in November. Not that I have a problem with that.

Didn't Gingrich start the negative attack ads? Romney was talking about Obama originally when Newt was going after Romney. What goes around comes around and it looks like it came around pretty hard!

"I think that's reprehensible, I think it's dishonest, and I think it's shameful." Typical bully. Whines and cries when the things he does, are done to him. Gingrich is nothing more than a crybaby.

Newt, you are classless! America doesn't want a guy like you to be President!

We are seeing why you didn't maintain your support to stay on as Speaker of the House. You are an angry man!

The real reason he didn't call was because he was too busy eating. Either that or he was having his charm, class and social graces lesson.

Newt lacks the integrity and character to be President. Romney could have got upset about a lot of things but has always taken the high road. Newt is a narcissist, pure and simple.

I think Gingrich should pack his bags and go home. He is only hurting the GOP's chances of winning in November.

Newt's fight with Romney is personal, and if his funds allow it he will continue to find ways to attack Romney.

I like Newt, but his behavior lately has really turned me against him. If he can't take the heat now, just what would he do as President. Santorum looks like the best guy for the job but I don't believe he could beat BHO and all his $$$

If Newt would have been able to raise as much money as Romney he would have ran as many or more attack ads as Romney did. Newt is continuing to prove himself as a government insider whiner.

Newt says that Romney didn't deserve a congrats call. The majority of the people of Florida decided that Newt didn't deserve a vote either.

I CANNOT BELIEVE he is saying all this. What a little girl. I mean- he is very unstable and immature. That's DANGEROUS with alot of power.
However, this does not suprise me. LOOK INTO IT PEOPLE– Newt has been CRAZY for quite sometime. He wants a New World Order and all that.... he's LOONY and SHOULD NOT be POTUS.

Gingrich didn't invent the politics of personal destruction, but he certainly revived it in the 90's. Now he's squealing like a stuck pig because someone dares to criticize him – the Great I Am.

    Poor l'il Newt.

Newt should go back in time and give the Speaker some pointers on being a stand up guy and not being negative. He was the nastiest Speaker and went after Clinton the same way Romney is now going after him.
