Poll: Obama bests GOP frontrunners

(CNN) - President Barack Obama tops the Republican presidential frontrunners in hypothetical head-to-head matchups, according to a new survey.

The ABC/Washington Post Poll indicated Obama is ahead of Mitt Romney, 51% to 45%, among registered voters. The new figure is the first time Obama cracked 50% against the former Massachusetts governor in the survey. He received 46% to Romney's 47% in mid-January.

It appears Obama was also aided by an increase in support among independent voters, who were split 48% for Obama and 47% for Romney. The former Massachusetts governor held a 12-point edge in January.

The new figures showed Romney's business background, which he often touts on the campaign trail, is a positive element of his candidacy. He held a narrow edge over Obama on who is best to handle the economy.

The president also bested Gingrich, 54% to 43%, among registered votes, although it was a smaller margin than the 15% by which Obama led the former House speaker in January.

In an interview on Sunday the president said he deserves a second term. The poll found 49% of registered voters agreed, while 49% said he does not deserve a second term.

But the president did not fare as well among independent voters, who will likely play a significant role in the 2012 elections.

Obama received a 47% approval rate among the key voting bloc and a 50% disapproval figure.

The poll questioned 1,000 adults between Wednesday and Saturday with a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

President Obama is the best president in recent (and not so recent) history. He's the President of the People. No Republican candidate comes close to him in integrity, sincerity, intelligence, problem ssolving ability..nothing. America is very lucky to have him in the White House. Thanks

Duh, of course Obama tops them all, they are all extreme in their views. Why would they expect us to vote for the party that caused this great recession. Obama stabilizes the economy, saves the auto-industry and the unemployment goes down further and I am supposed to vote for the guys who caused all this mess and who shockingly promise to reverse all this progress, PLEASE get real.

Calling any of these GOP candidates a "frontrunner" is like calling someone "the tallest midget." Go Obama 2012 !!!

If unemployment drops below 8% – which could happen in a few weeks – Obama will be re-elected in the biggest landslide since 1984.

You seem to have left off Obama vs. Paul. I would be curious to see if you can have that poll conducted. I think its biased and un-fair to always use Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum.

Duh, who would vote for any goper? They have ZERO plans, other than of course trying to defeat Obama. Mitt supports healthcare law, but only in Mass. Mitt signed an assault weapons ban in Mass. By his own words doesn't care about the very poor. Likes to fire people. Sent jobs overseas, and is in the 1%. Other than Obama haters, who could vote for this guy?????

We shall see in November. Carter and Dukakis were way up on their possible opponets, too. No second term for Jimmy and no first term for Dukakis.

These polls are just snapshots of how American things at this moment. So many things can happen between now and december. These polls are good for talking points in TV shows but they do not mean much.

Republicans are not fazed by polls showing they are losing ground. They simply refuse to accept any information that does not support their beliefs, opinions and prejudices.

The Republicans have said "tell the recovery to the unemployed and the under-employed" Well, Republicans, then why do you block every jobs bill proposed in Congress? Why have Republicans voted NOT to extend unemployment benefits? Why have Republicans fought so hard NOT to give tax breaks to the middle class while falling all over themselves to give tax breaks to their millionaire buddies? I'm voting for Obama. I have confidence in Obama and he's turning the economy around DESPITE Republicans. I can't ask for more than that. Obama 2012..

I will NOT vote Obama for a 2nd term. I didn't vote for him the 1st time. As to his comment, nobody ever deserves a second term, you have to earn it. He hasn't earned anything in my opinion.

The president deserves a second term. It took eight years of republican policies to break the back of our economy and it will take more than four to get things corrected. With the trends that are showing in our markets and current policies that favor the people and corporations, we will certainly bounce back. President Obama has proven to prudent and strategic in his decisions. Mitt Romney and Newt are two different sides of the same coin. Both still preaching no tax, and reduced regulations. THAT IS INSANE! Why not FAIR tax and smart regulations.

As somebody said that these polls are meaningless unless they are taken just before the elections as they swing this way or that way and go up and down. They are done so people can be busy and earn a living. Let them do it, everybody has a right to earn a living and feed their families.
