Romney campaign memo downplays expectations

Denver (CNN) - A memo released by Mitt Romney's political director Tuesday suggested the Republican frontrunner's campaign is anticipating a potential loss in one of Tuesday's GOP caucuses.

"Of course, there is no way for any nominee to win first place in every single contest," Romney's political director Rich Beeson wrote in the memo. "John McCain lost 19 states in 2008, and we expect our opponents to notch a few wins too."

The Romney campaign signaled Monday it sees Rick Santorum as a threat in Tuesday's caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado. A non-binding primary is also scheduled to take place in Missouri.

In e-mails to reporters and on press conference calls, Romney's staff and surrogates repeatedly criticized the former Pennsylvania senator's spending record in Congress.

The memo, titled "The Road Ahead – A Reality Check," notes no delegates will be awarded immediately following Tuesday's caucuses and goes on to explain the Romney campaign's rationale for its confidence in the contests to come.

"Unlike the other candidates, our campaign has the resources and organization to keep winning over the long run," Beeson wrote.

The memo takes a few jabs at Romney's rivals. It refers to Newt Gingrich's strategy to hold out for a strong showing in the South in March as "a flight of fancy and not grounded in reality."

Noting that many of those Southern contests offer only a proportional allocation of delegates, the memo stated, "the bottom line is that it will be difficult for Speaker Gingrich to take large delegate prizes from any of these states."

The memo added that Romney's organizational strength makes him better positioned to take upcoming contests out West and in the U.S. territories of Guam, Northern Marianas, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Puerto Rico.

"Even 'success' in a few states will not mean collecting enough delegates to win the nomination," Beeson wrote. "This is exactly the sort of methodical, long-haul campaign we planned for, and we are well on the way to victory."

This coming from a "front runner" who most people say: the more they find out about him the LESS they like him, most people have no idea what his REAL name is and voter turnout is low to come out and vote for him. Yes, a real winner. Willard might as well as used to losing now rather than later – because in November IT WILL BE ALL OVER.

Willard knows good and darn well he's not going to win every primary. He's in for a rude awakening come Super Tuesday. This man can barely run a campaign, how can we expect him to run the country?

Republican voters are not enthused by their choices for POTUS.
They should take look at the Democratic choice. The right choice.

When they reference "resources" they are are not talking about a feet on the ground grassroots organization like our President can brag about. Nope. They are talking about SuperPacs and the ton$ and ton$ of moolah that they are hauling in via them.
All the more reason why I am glad that Obama changed his mind about allowing Super Pacs to assist in his campaign effort.
Regardless.............I CANNOT wait for Mittens to go toe to HEAD with our President in a real live debate. There will be pieces of Mittens scattered all over the stage and sticking to the front row audience when the President tears him apart.

It is probably a good thing that Mittens is rich, because he is not a very good choice for president.

Willard down playing because he did not factor in Santorum sneaking up on him. 40 million spent on negative ads and still not sealing the deal. Willard go to mansion and stay put. We are not impressed with negativity and you have not given any of your own vision. Lokk up Bret Baier interview with Mittens and see how uncomfortable Willard is in his own skin.

Did Mittens five sons – Tom, Dick, Harry, Bill and Bob – take a leave of absence from their jobs in order to help their father campaign? Must be nice to be able to take such a long leave of absence and no one in your family is critically ill necessitating that you are home caring for them. It is even more wonderful that their employers are so understanding and are willing to hold their jobs open for them, in light of the current economic conditions and all dontchaknow.
Employed like regualr folks indeed, hogwash.

Of course Obama has all the union lackeys locked up since he funnelled so much money to them with the "stimulus" plan and gift of GM and Chrysler to the unions. Yes, our tax dollars at work people. Chicago corruption at its best.

Which of you republicans knew your fearless leader back in 2008 started the bailouts of the auto companies AND the financial companies? Which of you have even publically acknowledged the republicans (by way of less regulations) allow the country to jettison 700K jobs/month...You already should have know about the financial industry, here's the info about the auto (search in Bloomberg): The Bush administration provided loans to GM and Chrysler starting with $4 billion to each company in December 2008 and January 2009. Bush eventually provided $17.4 billion in aid to the automakers before Barack Obama's administration expanded the rescue of the companies to $62 billion. The issue is, you want to go back to the days that created this economic situation? Republicans can't even acknowledge they did wrong, never mind that that they will keep it from happening again... They want to go back?!?!?!
