Post-Santorum victories, Romney goes after Gingrich

(CNN) - One day after Rick Santorum pulled a three-state win in the Republican nominating process, Mitt Romney's campaign blasted out a statement Wednesday attacking an opponent who didn't fare as well Tuesday night: Newt Gingrich.

"Speaker Gingrich just doesn't seem to get it. Our staggering national debt and recurring deficits are jeopardizing America's fiscal future – yet he attacks critics of his moon base proposal for being 'cheap' and 'stingy,'" Amanda Henneberg, Romney campaign spokesperson, said in the statement.

On Tuesday, Romney's campaign signaled it would begin a more aggressive approach against Santorum. The two campaigns spent the day attacking each other in the media over Romney's record on contraception policies and Santorum's history with earmarks.

As the results poured in later that night, showing three big scores for Santorum's presidential bid, a Romney adviser told CNN he expected to see the former Massachusetts governor place more focus on Santorum.

But it appears Romney's team still sees Gingrich as strong competition in the South in the weeks leading up to Super Tuesday on March 6. The Romney statement on Wednesday especially attacked Gingrich for his lunar colony idea, hitting him as anything but a "small-government fiscal conservative."

The email blast also came the same day Romney campaigns in Gingrich's native territory of Georgia.

"Combined with his record as the 'granddaddy of earmarks' and his past criticism of fiscal conservatives, it's not surprising that his campaign hasn't left the launch pad," Henneberg said in the e-mail.

Now that Santorum is a serious contender, let's get him thoroughly vetted for the VP spot. Romney/Santorum sounds good, but Santorum needs to get the skeletons out of his closet. So, let the process begin, by first, releasing his taxes as promised some weeks ago.

Here is how I paraphrase Rom-money's speech:

"At Bain Capital, I fired people, broke up and sold off companies, sent thousands of jobs overseas, and padded my off-shore bank accounts with billions. What I did at Bain I can do for the whole US! That's why you should elect me! ME, ME, ME!!!!!!!! Because of my business experience, and what I can do to, er, for America."
