Washington (CNN) – As word trickled out of a White House compromise with Catholic groups on its rule around contraception coverage on Friday morning, administration officials took to the phones to sell the plan to religious leaders across the spectrum.
Catholic officials say President Obama called New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, to explain the revised policy, which exempts religiously affiliated universities and hospitals for paying for no cost contraception for their employees but requires insurers to offer such coverage for for free to women who work at such institutions.
Truth and Nothing But the hturT
women have enough "special" rights! there's no need to give them anymore!
We have enough special rights? Why don't you go back to the middle ages and stay there truth and anything but the truth? The President did the right thing and that anger the gop. Good grief, now they have to go back to the drawing board and make up another issue. This crap is getting on my nerves. I wouldn't vote for any of the gop's candidates now if that were the only choice i had. Btw i am not a liberal... Im a liberated independent American woman with all the rights i deserve.
So unless you are an atheist you people have no arguement.
So, what is your solution for those people who are atheists? You just hit the conservative mischaracterization nail dead on the head. The entire conservative argument is framed around the context that everyone is a devout Catholic.
Reading the comments it is clear that the people do not understand what is occuring. The private medical institutions that is run and funded by various Christian religions oppose to the Presidents policy. The Christian faith is pro-life and they are taking a stand stating that are not willing to accept the contraception, abortion, or any other direction that opposes their pro-life stance. The Catholic chuch is in the news because they openly opposed the policy first.
The individual does have rights, you can go to public on non-Christian based hospitals. The private religious hospitals also have rights and they decided to speak up and take action. People (like the commentors) are mostly upset that they will not get something for free at any hospital.
I don't care who you are the government doesn't have the right to have my tax dollars spent on birth control, illegals, and about a billion other programs we don't need.
Do you feel the same way about oil subsidies? Do you feel the same way about the tax loophole that allows multi-national corporations to deduct foreign taxes paid on their overseas manufacturing plants *in full* off of their US taxes? Do you feel the same way about the fact that if the company sells capital instead of widgets where you work at, then your salary is treated as capital gains instead of earned income? Hmm?
Maybe the Catholic church just needs to pony up a $100 miilion to Obama's re-election campaign in order to get the same exempts from Obamacare than the unions got??? Yeah, I think that is what Obama is angling for. Catholics, expect one more basket round this Sunday in order to make a down payment on retianing your religious freedom.
SL thinks we should return to the 1950's?? When blacks had no rights, and women had less? Um... You go do that and see how it works out for you.
And (NON) TRUTHandNOTHING MORE thinks women already have enough "special rights"??
Apparently Republicans are doubling down on the White, Christian, Male vote (upper class or ignorant lower class)
and completely disregarding women, the poor, the unions, the teachers, the elderly, the automotive industry, the blacks, latins and definitely the middle eastern voters.
Good luck with that come November. Looks like Obama AND Democratic Congress is going to have some celebrating to do for some landslide wins.
Catholics should see it for what it is.........a complete and total deception, that doesn't change the reality at all. Catholic institutions and employees will still be paying for things they do NOT believe in!
The clueless are asking "who's paying for this?" –The insurance companies will jump at it, since statistically a woman with contraceptives is a lot less expensive for an insurance company than one without. Think for a moment about it... DUHH!
Obama comes through again, and shows his Solomonic smarts. Four more years! He deserves reelection if only for reintroducing the word "compromise" to the presidential vocabulary, after it was so sorely missed from 2000-2008, when it was replaced by "swagger."
The catholic church is not attempting to exterminate womens' rights. It simply does not want a federal mandate stating that catholic institutions have to pay for something that contradicts doctrine. Women will still be able to obtain free contraceptive services through their insurance, they will simply have to choose from the thousands of health clinics and hospitals not affiliated with the catholic church. This compromise supports both sides in their freedom. Surely we don't want to support only SOME freedoms. Then our country would only be KINDA free. As far as the unfortunate circumstances that the church has seen regarding priests and their terrible actions, as logical people we can see that there will always be flawed and even EVIL men, which of course does not mean that the institution is evil or deserving to be dismissed in credibility entirely. There are evil men and women all over the world that claim to be members of peaceful and loving religions. I fail to see how that is even relevant in this discussion. Remember to protect ALL freedoms, even if you don't believe in the people who's freedoms you are protecting.
Who cares about this fringe group? Their one size does not fit all. Time to stop paying them the attention that they demand.
@ Len – Thank You for your Post – I agree w/ you. I've been saying the same thing you're saying for a long time !
"I didn't post it Rudy... one of your juvenile comrades did."
That's what happens, Truth. Once they feel threatened by you, they try to sabotage you. You've got the better of them. Wear it as a badge of honor.
Padraig – you got it backwards. Yes, "private religious hospitals also have rights" but those "rights" are controlled by the SAME Federal Agency that mandates health care rules for ALL EMPLOYERS! If you are a BUSINESS [which in this case those "private" institutions are] and receive Federal Funding and EMPLOY people [regardless of Religious Affiliation] then you are subject to those rules.
This whole issue has nothing to do with religious freedom or separation of church and state, or the Govt dictating what you or Catholics can/can't do relative to BC and Abortion. It has been used for as political fodder by the Repugs. It's about mandating that employers offer the same healthcare choices. The Govt is not forcing, nor was it ever forcing Catholics to do something they don't believe in. Simple – don't want to provide the coverage... don't be a Catholic hospital – which IS a BUSINESS BTW, or had yo not noticed that ?
