Obama announces contraception compromise

(CNN) - President Barack Obama announced a compromise Friday in the dispute over whether to require full contraception insurance coverage for female employees at religiously affiliated institutions.Under the plan, religiously affiliated universities and hospitals will not be forced to offer contraception coverage to their employees. Insurers will be required, however, to offer complete coverage free of charge to any women who work at such institutions.

Obama is a political genious. Seriously. I believe he always intended to compromise, but purposely floated the more controversial policy just to mess with the Republican primaries/caucuses this past Tuesday. It was pure red meat for Santorum supporters and the extreme religious base in the party – and made Santorum a much bigger headache for Romney.
That exact thought had crossed my mind, too. Did you notice the proliferation of anti-Romney ads after he won NH, but before SC? It plays very well into the hard right wing's hands, and pushes all of the GOP candidates further to the right, far away from moderates and women voters.

Not compromise. Not cave. Not waffle. Not flip flop.
Just obama's leadership style, whatever it takes to buy a vote.

@ bob – Fantastic post and well thought out!!! I believe that the President is doing a great job of beating the GOP at their own game – All while not even breaking a sweat. He has outed them as the vile, overly religious, extremely stupid people they truly are. Well done Mr. President - OBAMA 2012!!

98% of Catholic women use birth control. 28 states already have these policies in place and the sky hasn't fallen. "Catholic" employers do (and always have) covered vasectomies (pretty effective birth control; ask any man). Contraceptives are prescribed for girls and women for many other situations besides birth control. "Catholic" employers enjoy their tax exempt status, despite the facts that 1) the Catholic Church is one of the richest organizations and property owners in the world and 2) the Church continually voids their tax exempt status every time their priests hand down their marching orders regarding who to vote for and who to donate to from pulpits all over the US. Enough is enough.

That is NO compromise. It is simply wording it in a way that makes it sound better, when it fact it doesn't change a single thing about the fact that Catholics, both the institution, and the employees, have to pay for services they do not believe in, religiously.

@Truth – You're at it again. One would think that the American people would much prefer a president that compromises and works for all of us, then one that is stuck in his ideology (ie Bush) and won't budge no matter how times they are proven wrong. President Obama has a heart and is trying to balance religious beliefs with our "God" given rights as individuals and citizens. For a party that is always preaching about personal freedoms you sure stepped into this time as you would prefer a woman's individual freedom be taken away from the Catholic heirarchy. So, it's ok by you that "religion" takes away personal freedom, but not our government in your view, right. We are a secular nation compromised of many different belief systems, but the laws set by our government need to supercede when they are protecting everyone equally.

This is NOT a WAFFLE on President Obama's part. Please read statements correctly.
This is for the women who do not want to end up with abortions and for their daughters and grand daughters who do not want abortions. There is no smoke and mirrors with Obama the smoke and mirrors are with the GOP The Insurance companies have to COVER ALL WOMEN WHO DESIRE CONTRACEPTION METHODS. Makes a whole lot of sense.!!

What in heck is wrong with the people who vote Republican – have you no common sense when it comes to Contraception and the Catholic Church. Most of the Catholic's now use contraceptive methods – they may spout out that they do not but if they can afford it they do !!. Which is better than children being born to people who cannot afford to care for them and also for women and teenagers having to live their lives knowing that they have had to either abort or have their children adopted.

The Republican party sits back and does NOTHING! Their candidates for their party are the worst I have ever seen . Not one of them would know the truth even if they fell over it !!!

We know. We know. Now that conservatives have a nice piece of red meat to chew on, they can rant on and on about it until their faces turn blue. Meanwhile, Pres. Obama owns the foreign policy debate. Meanwhile, Pres. Obama owns the economy debate. Meanwhile, Pres. Obama is focused on the issues that are at the top of polls, which concern most Americans. Meanwhle, Pres. Obama is looking like the only adult in the room who is willing to compromise, while the GOP candidates move harder to the right horizon shouting, "My way or the highway." Meanwhile, Pres. Obama wins the end game while Republicans are playing reruns.

Not only caving, but caving and STILL getting burned on the cave. NONE of these organizations are EVER going to trust him again. If they do then they deserve the screwing over they'll get.

The American people should take a long hard look at Obama the leftist before he crawls back into his closet. We only get very small glimpses of who he really is when he messes up like this.

It is my body, my choice, and I am tired of men telling women what they can and can't do. In my late 40's, I was on the pill for medical reasons, and thank goodness my insurance covered my prescription every month, with a low co-payment. Had they not, my cost would have been $75 a month. And for people who say go to Planned Parenthood and get it for free, the closest one to me, at that time, was over an hour away.

The clueless are asking "who's paying for this?"
–The insurance companies will jump at it, since statistically a woman with contraceptives is a lot less expensive for an insurance company than one without. Think for a moment about it... DUHH!
Obama comes through again, and shows his Solomonic smarts. Four more years! He deserves reelection if only for reintroducing the word "compromise" to the presidential vocabulary, after it was so sorely missed from 2000-2008, when it was replaced by "swagger."
