Palin calls on Romney to work harder for the conservative vote

Washington (CNN) - Sarah Palin issued a warning to Mitt Romney Saturday, calling on the former Massachusetts governor to do a better job explaining his record to conservatives or risk dampening voter turnout in November if he wins the Republican presidential nomination.

In an interview with CNN and The New York Times before her speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Palin said she was confused by Romney’s declaration here on Friday that he was a “severely conservative Republican.”

“I wasn’t quite sure what the word 'severely' meant,” Palin said.

She said Romney and his two main rivals - Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich - should be given time to explain the flaws in their record until the Republican National Convention in August, when she said the nomination fight could ultimately be decided.

But Romney may have the hardest sale to make, she said, asking him to explain his “shifts in ideology” since he left the Massachusetts governorship.

“You have to have the tea party patriots enthused and energized in order to win this nomination, and more importantly in order to defeat Barack Obama,” Palin argued.

If conservatives are “dismissed and they are marginalized” by the Republican establishment, “they are going to be much less enthused and much less willing to put it all on the line for the GOP candidate in the general election.”

“We can’t afford to have low voter turnout in the general election, and that is all the more reason for Romney to really start connecting more with conservatives,” she said.

Though she has spoken warmly about both Gingrich and Santorum, she said she was still making up her mind about which candidate to support.

Her Fox News contract does not prohibit her from weighing in on the presidential race, she said.

Palin said she would not encourage any of the candidates to drop out of the race, saying it’s “not yet” time for Gingrich to step aside and allow Santorum to rally the conservative vote.

She also welcomed the possibility of a brokered convention in Tampa.

“I don’t think that it would be a negative for the party, a brokered convention,” she said. “And people who start screaming that a brokered convention is the worst thing for the GOP, they have an agenda. They have their own personal or political reasons for their own candidate, who they would like to see protected away from a brokered convention. That’s part of the competition, that’s part of the process. And it may happen.”

It seems so logical that all Mitt has to do is shock the CONSERVATIVE PARTY by explaining how an air-tight submarine loaded with Jews floated to Central America, met Jesus, and hence, the Native Americans "were born" and are actually genetically tied to Jews. Folks, that, in a nutshell, is the foundation of the Mormon Church and this is Mitt's moment to SHINE.

If Mitt can explain this, he has my vote, and should earn the vote of EVERY CONSERVATIVE in America.

Thedre certain things you just can't get rid of like aints, flies and Palin. No brain just looks and she thinks Americans care what she says? I am sure there are some fanatics in the South, Sauth East Mid West who cheer her on but they are not normal people, they are fanatics and we don't count them. Why are Americans listen to these crazy people in teh GOP who don't know how to tie their shoes but want to lead America. Why don't these people find a real job and go to work like we all do? None of these half baked nuts has a clue to lead this country. Stop waisting money and meaningless speeches, stop the religious none sense and use common sense if you have any.

I wasn’t quite sure what the word 'severely' meant,” Palin said.

Not surprising. It has three syllables.

Whatever. "Conservatives" will vote for Romney because they do what they're told. Believing that Romney is "conservative" is far less insane than a lot of the other things they believe, like "tax cuts lower the deficit" and "Jeebus did it is a scientific theory".

They'll do what they're told, because thinking is for educated elitist librul pansies.

What's wrong with the GOP? Why does it put up this useless woman on a pedestal?

Just for the heck of it, I listened to her speech at the CPAC. It was one of the most awful political speeches I've ever heard. What surprised me more was that there was this crowd who just ate up her words.

One sure way for conservatives and Republicans to lose in November, is to put this hack up front.

Why do I have trouble finding ANY respect for Conservatives?
Why are they still listening to Palin? Have they not recognized she is an anchor? As legitimizing as the plague?
Seriously, if you cons want us to stop making fun of you and take you seriously, STOP LISTENING TO PALIN.

This woman is a true POS... I have never seen such disrespect for, not only the man, but the office of the Presidency. Thanks CNN for always having her hanging around like a sour dishtowel.

Palin can't really speak to anything. She never served a full term and was never fully versed in any aspect of policy enough to have her own thought. I cant' take things from her seriously.

What a weird headline: "Palin Warns Romney". It might as well read "Loser Warns Loser". As a previous commenter said, Palin is kind of cute but who cares what she says at this point?

    Caribou Barbie,
Romney should keep her way. Any support coming from that idiot would jeopardize his plans.

Sarah Palin doesn't "get it," though by now that is a massively overused cliche in the political arena. The conservative vote has two characteristics which will override any ideology in a general election: 1) Conservatives will ALWAYS vote Republican in a general election. They either aren't capable of independent decision-making and choosing whether or not the GOP is actually acting in the best interests of all Americans, or hate Democrats so much they don't care if they like the Republican candidate. 2) They are only about a third of the electorate. In order to win an election, the middle MUST be courted, as well as the few Democrats also capable of independent thought.

"Palin warns Romney???" I would not hire Palin to shine my shoes, let alone give me advice; and I'm pretty sure Mitt Romney would agree.

Romney knows the tea party will back him, if he wins the nomination (where else are they gonna go?) So he is wisely avoiding being too extremely reich wing.

She took time off from snorting Cocaine to warn Mitt to shut his mouth because everytime he opens it is either a lie or a factual error the has got to be one of the Dumbest Candidiates ever (Besides The Shrub, the Dumbest ever) to run. I do hope people are dumb enough for him to win the nomination however, he will be a cinch to loose and we will be rid of the Far Right Wing Lunatics for awhile.

Sarah must be hard up for cash, I've never seen someone make so much money in speaking fees and her only accomplishment was quitting her position and walking away from the people of Alaska....

Here we go again!! Someone please explain to this woman that no one takes advise from quitters and/or LOSERS!!! If you are not capable of running the local PTA, why is anyone going to want advise from you about anything?? You are confused about Romney saying he is "severely conservative", but tell us, what are you not confused about? Who told you to use the phrase "shifts in ideology" We all know that didn't come out of your camp! Leave Romney alone, let him lose all on his own, you know, the way you did.

Mmmm hmmmm because we all know what a brilliant thinker she is. Yup, Mitt, you court the uber-cons just as hard as your little brain can think up ways to twist in their hot wind, and you'll give the Dems more ammunition than they need in the general election. Oh, are we over a barrel? Pity. Sarah can put you in it with all the other monkeys but don't forget she has a gun and knows how to use it, just for the fun of killing. You're going down, big guy, and she will help you get there faster. Or you could ignore her as the irrelevant trailer trash that she is. You'll still go down but at least you won't be soiled with the association in the process.
