L.A. mayor to chair Democratic Convention

Washington (CNN) – Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will be named chairman of the Democratic National Convention.

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz told members Tuesday she would nominate Villaraigosa to the position, according to an email obtained by CNN from a Democratic source who asked not to be identified.

Tentative payroll tax cut deal reached, GOP legislators say

Washington (CNN) – Congressional negotiators reached a tentative deal Tuesday to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits while avoiding a fee cut for Medicare doctors, according to Republican legislators and aides.

The framework deal followed a key Republican concession Monday and could receive the endorsement of a House-Senate conference committee on Wednesday.

Santorum: Tax returns 'should be out soon'

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum seemed slightly out of the loop Tuesday over when his own tax returns would be released, saying he thought they may have already been out.

"They should be out soon. I thought they were actually coming out today," Santorum told reporters at a campaign stop in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Doggie demonstrators protest Romney

(CNN) – Dogs and their owners staged a protest outside the Westminster Dog Show Tuesday in response to presidential candidate Mitt Romney once traveling with his dog in a crate on top of his car.

The story has been the subject of jokes and jabs from opponents and late night comedians. Romney, in his defense, said he put the dog in the crate because he was sick and enjoyed riding on top. CNN's Jeanne Moos reports.

CNN Poll: Most Americans see no U.S. obligation in Syria

(CNN) - Nearly three-quarters of Americans believe the United States does not have a responsibility to do something about the fighting in Syria between government forces and anti-government groups, according to a new national survey.

In a CNN/ORC/International poll released Tuesday, 73% of Americans said the U.S. has no obligation to respond to the ongoing unrest, while 25% agreed with the notion. Two percent had no opinion.

CNN Poll: Romney's likability fading

(CNN) - Mitt Romney's overall favorable ratings have dropped, while Rick Santorum's standing has jumped among Republicans, according to a new national survey.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday indicates Romney's popularity has especially taken a tumble among Republicans, with a 13-point decline in positive reviews from his own party.

Negotiators near deal on payroll tax cut, jobless benefits, doc fix

Washington (CNN) – House and Senate lawmakers appeared very close Tuesday to a broad deal that would keep in place a payroll tax cut, extend long-term unemployment benefits, and prevent a cut in fees to Medicare doctors, top Democratic and Republican aides told CNN.

The three issues are at the center of high stakes election-year negotiations that reflect the priorities of the two parties.
