Santorum goes up with ads in Michigan

(CNN) - Rick Santorum's Republican presidential campaign says it's going up with two new TV commercials in Michigan.

The campaign confirms to CNN that the spots, both positive in nature, will run statewide starting Tuesday. The move comes one day after a new poll indicated that the former senator from Pennsylvania was surging in the state, and as an independent super PAC that supports former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney announced that it was buying $640,000 in ad time in the state. Restore Our Future has already spent a quarter of a million dollars to run TV commercials in Michigan. And the Romney campaign announced Tuesday they were going up with a new spot that touts the candidate's Michigan roots.

Arizona and Michigan are next up in the primary and caucus calendar, with both states holding contests in two weeks, on February 28. While Arizona's 29 delegates are winner take all, the 30 delegates at stake in Michigan will be divided proportionally.

Both Santorum and Romney will campaign in Michigan later this week.

One of the ads distinguishes Santorum from Romney and the other GOP candidates, asking, "Who has the best chance to beat Obama?" The spot argues his positions on social issues, corruption, and foreign policy are unmatched.

Another highlights praise for Santorum from influential conservatives.

According to an American Research Group survey released Monday, 33% of people likely to vote in Michigan's GOP presidential primary said they are supporting the one-time long shot candidate, with 27% backing Romney, 21% supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 12% backing Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. The survey was conducted entirely after Santorum's victories over Romney, Gingrich and Paul last Tuesday in caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a non-binding primary in Missouri. Santorum's sweep of the February 7 contests sparked his surge in national and state polling.

The Santorum campaign is concentrating more of its firepower on Michigan rather than Arizona. The campaign feels they can be competitive in Michigan, as well as Ohio, which votes on Super Tuesday on March 6. Both states are considered part of the Rust Belt, with larger working class populations and strong Catholic communities, which may favor Santorum over Romney, who was born in Michigan and whose father served as governor of the state in the 1960's.

Sanitorium says that the provision requiring health insurance companies to cover contraception at no charge is a "war on religion," the government "coercing" people into going against their faiths.

In the next breath, Sanitorium says that if elected POTUS, he would reinstate Don't Ask, Don't Tell; pass a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage as between one woman and one man; overturn Roe v Wade; and institute changes to our legal system that "follow God's laws."

In other words, Sanitorium wants to establish a theocracy based on his narrow interpretation of the Bible and Christianity. And yet, he believes this in no way would be the government dictating how and what people should believe.

The hypocrisy of Ricky and his followers is mind-boggling.

Don't know about this one – but this one is going to be about "the money" plain & simple. If Romney expects to win Michigan – he might need to take a withdrawl slip with him to the caymans – I'd say about 1 Billion should do it, for a 400K a yr. Job. All he has to do is : take a page out of Perry's Playbook. Romney needs to find out the meaning of "saturate" "cover" "blanket" "plaster" Just like Perry does, I'm talking about some serious money here. IF you saturate that whole state with T.V. Ads / radio ads / You will win. (Just like Florida)

I am a Republican and I will never vote for Rick Santorum. We don't need more social wackos in the GOP but for sure we need one who can show the American voters that he/she is capable of taking this economy around. Enough of BS.

This looks like a scene out of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" where pink becomes the leader of a Fascist movement. Surreal, alarming and possibly clairvoyant should this nutjob somehow win the Presidency.

I don’t adhere to Santorum’s Conservative agenda; but I do respect him for sticking to his ideological guns through think and thin; even if the odd imagery makes him look like Count Von Count teaching cookie monster how to take inventory of his macaroons.

Have you noticed the Culture Wars are in full force again? Could it be that the GOP has figured out that the improving economy is likely to undermine the economic arguments they were hanging their hopes on?

  16. Just Saying

Some poeple say that Rick Santorum does not believe in freedom of religion. Well, they are wrong. But a little bit of history is needed to put that error into proper perspective. When the concept of Freedom of Religion first came into play, it was the freedom of the ruler of a country to choose the religion that he (I would say "or she" but it was almost entirely "he" in those days) would follow, free from interference from other sovereigns. And which he was also free to require that his subjects follow, free from interference from other sovereigns. With the further proviso that he could put to death any of his subjects for refusing to follow the sovereign's religious dictates, again free from interference from other sovereigns. That is the freedom of religion that the Ayatolla Santorum wants – for the government to have the power to compel citizens to live their lives in accordance with the dictates of his religion.

How can Romney who previously wished that Michigan go 'Bankrupt' as the 'Motor City', and expect them to support him now? Isn't he a true representative of what a 'JERK' is?

The man said let's drop the petty stuff and debate on issues, then picks Romney apart for using "severely." Nice. He will come undone when he doesn't present his tax returns as promise and with his records of spending coming out. We don't need more spending in this country.

What is so crazy about voting for Santorum is he can't beat Obama in the general! My state of Florida will not elect someone as conservative as Santorum on key issues, especially women voters, they are turned off by him significantly. I believe that Mitt can win both Ohio & Florida, two key states you must win in the fall to win the election. A vote for Santorum is a vote for Obama, can't you people in the republican party see that? I don't care how moderate you think Mitt is, he can beat Obama, Santorum can't. People in our own party have said that if its Newt or Santorum they will vote for Obama, me included. Even a moderate Romney is better than a liberal Obama!

If Santorum is serious about "Made in America" ask him if he would support repealing NAFTA in an effort to keep manufacturing jobs in the US.
