Arpaio: I briefed Santorum on birth certificate investigation

Phoenix (CNN) – Joe Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, briefed GOP contender Rick Santorum on his investigation into President Barack Obama's birth certificate, the controversial law enforcement official told reporters Tuesday.

After a speech to a Republican gathering in Phoenix where Santorum appeared earlier in the day, Arpaio explained he wanted to inform the candidate of his investigation "as a matter of fairness in case he wouldn't want me to support him."

Arpaio said he plans to endorse one of the four remaining GOP candidates in the coming weeks. But the sheriff added he would not make his choice known before he announces the findings of his birth certificate probe at a news conference set for March 1st. This endorsement would be his second in the race; in November 2011, he endorsed then-candidate Rick Perry.

Santorum, he said, seemed to have no problem with the nature of his investigation.

"He had no problems with what I told him that I may be doing," Arpaio told reporters.

The sheriff said he is conducting the investigation after receiving requests from "the tea party."

Arpaio added he believes he is doing the president a favor.

"I really started this on the theory that maybe I could clear this mess up," Arpaio told reporters. "Wouldn't it be nice for me to do that?"

The White House released the president's birth certificate last year. Officials in Hawaii where Obama was born have verified its authenticity.

A federal Department of Justice investigation into Arpaio's office made public in December described "a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos at MCSO that reaches the highest levels of the agency."

He dismissed the allegations as a politically-driven "witch hunt."

Speaking of . . . . . . where are the birth certificates of these home grown clowns?
Anybody interested in them? For all we know the flip flopper could have been born in Mexico, the newterman could have been born on the Moon, sanatorium could have been born in a cave in the middle of the Earth and for paul, nobody was really keeping records at the time of his birth.

What is the sheriff going to do? Threatening Officials in Hawaii that have verified the authenticity of President Obamas birth certificate? And Santorum finds this ok? There is proof that God is very patience before he sends lightening down to those guys! Oh well, I guess we have to wait for that until November!

The FBI investigates every presidential candidate, including Obama when he was running for president in 2008. The FBI was under a Republican administration in 2008. Republicans need to stop wasting their time on Obama's birth certificate. They need to find a Republican candidate who can compete with the president, someone who can get a lead on the president in the FOX News poll and the Rasmussen poll. Each of the remaining Republican candidates trails the president in these two polls. These polls are not known to favor Democrats.

Maybe he should consult with Donald Trump and his birther "experts."

And precisely where does this fit into the jurisdiction of a county sheriff in Arizona. Some public citizen should consider a taxpayer lawsuit for the misuse of public funds.

"He dismissed the allegations as a politically-driven 'witch hunt.'"

Contender for most ironic comment of the month.

Technically, if the US never took over the formally independent country of Hawaii in the first half of the 20th century, then Obama wouldn't be a citizen. But since we did forcefully take over the country of Hawaii, and then made it into a state, it is legal for Hawaii to produce American citizens. So sorry crazy people, no matter how hard you wish, Obama is a citizen, and GASP he's president...

I was just reading this article and wondering why our Justice System even needs to do such an investigation like our and my hero Sheriff Joe is doing. If we really had honest People in government, a person not qualified would never have gotten beyond filing an application for getting on the ballot. We need to sweep the floor of the garage in its entirety, not just a little corner and say we did our job...all who let it get this far need to be impeached, imprisoned and made to pay for this mess. No two things about it, no slack cut on punishment for the guilty . Politicians need to get the message clearly that they serve the people, not the people serve them. My dear old Dad said it best years ago to me, He said the world is ass backwards now, years ago we used to eat inside the house and go outside to the bathroom and now we eat outside and run iside to do it....a lot of head knocking needs to be done .....more of what i feel should be done can not be printed on this site...

This Sherrif should be voted out in the next election. He's Discriminatory / Bias / and shows a lot of Partiality -He Just keeps himself on the news, constantly. If they don't vote this character Out in the next election, those people in AZ are in trouble.

I am making no sense out of this story. Why would Arpaio announce his support for a candidate AFTER the Republican Primary. This is one of the worst instances of a politician talking a lot and saying nothing that I can remember

Of course Rick had no problem with the Arpaio's investigation; Rick is probably a birther himself. But instead of publicly going down that path, he just impugns the President's religious beliefs. And Arpaio saying he is probably doing the President a favor – get over yourself buddy. You and Rick – unconscionable human beings.

Let me put this whole birther controversy into its' proper perspective.

What is sad about these birther investigations by right wing zealots is that is entirely unneccessary. President Obama was confirmed to be a US resident eligible to be POTUS back in 2008 by the Presidential Election Comission, which was run by none other than the Bush administration led Republican Party.

So, why do some continue to question President Obama's citizenship status? Why did tthis and other "never before" questions even come up at all? The most logical answers are not pretty.
