Maher puts one-million dollars behind pro-Obama Super PAC

Washington (CNN) - Comedian Bill Maher is putting his money where his mouth is.

The comedian and talk show host who has long railed on the weakness of the Republican presidential field announced at a stand up comedy show on Thursday that he would donate $1 million to Priorities USA Action, a pro-Obama Super PAC.

“My surprise tonight is I would like to tonight announce a donation to the Obama Super PAC—which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name ‘Priority (sic) USA Action’,” Maher said. “I know, it was named by Borat. But tonight I would like to give that PAC one million dollars.”

The concert, which was live streamed on Yahoo!, was held in San Jose, California and was billed by Yahoo! as the first stand-up comedy concert to be streamed live online.

In a tweet after the event, Maher said the announcement was a surprise to the Yahoo! organizers.

“Thank u everybody who's hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!”

Maher, whose comedy show is called “CrazyStupidPolitics,” has not been shy about his opinions of the 2012 race and when he spoke with CNN's Anderson Cooper, he said that other than Ron Paul, the Republican candidates running for president have “horrible society killing ideas about America.”

“The rest of those people are, of course, selling their souls to the corporate interests who back them,” Maher said. “They all act like god created the world in January of 2009, and then Barack Obama completely screwed it up.”

When asked in the same interview who he thought was going to win the 2012 election, Maher quickly tapped the president as the eventual winner.

“My money is still on Mitt Romney,” said Maher when asked who the eventual Republican nominee. “And I think he’s going to get the nomination, and then I think Obama is going to beat him like a runaway sister wife, yes, I do.”

Maher’s million dollar donation will substantially boost the coffers of the Super PAC which raised only $58,815.83 in January, according to a report filed earlier in the week with the Federal Election Commission.

– CNN’s Matthew Carey contributed to this report.

This is probably the most charitable thing Maher has ever done with his money. Personally, I don't care about anything this creep does

Religious freedoms? How about the freedom of every American to have contraception covered in their health plan. You know the Taliban claim religious freedom too, when they throw acid in girls' faces.

Truth and Nothing But the Truth

How ANYONE could admire, listen to or watch this vile, hate filled religious bigot is beyond me. Bill Maher had better hope there is not a hell because if there is, the hottest corner of it has been reserved for him.

@Investment Advisor – Not thin-skinned just sick of self-satisified conservatives who think they are better than anyone else. I've been reading this crap since President Obama was elected and it is just sickening. So you are a investment advisor. Not impressed as I've seen some pretty bad stuff happen to people who trusted their advisors. No apology forthcoming. I am just tired of the "I am a good, christian conservative and you are a bad, lazy, welfare sucking liberal" argument. Maybe this old world of ours will tick to a close this year. Maybe that's what we deserve because we are not nice to each other.

All far rightie (aka baggers) despise Bill Maher.

    (1) Some because they don't get his humor.

    (2) The others because they do.

The Citizen's United ruling was completely absurd and an injustice to the political system. However, now that it exists, I think any liberal leaning person should put as much money into any democratic candidate's super PAC. The electoral college stifles the voice of democrats and makes the republicans seem more important than they are. Since there are far more dems than pubs in America, democrats will be able to consistently raise more money. Eventually the repubs will get a clue and try to change the Citizen's United ruling.

You go Bill!!!! I just wish George Carlin was still alive for this election. He would be having so much fun with this lunacy. I believe Ron Paul is the only truthful GOP candidate running. I don't like all his policies, but I think he truly does & is therefore honest about them. In my humble opinion, abortion & birth control are 2 separate issues. Women who believe in birth control & practice it faithfully do not need abortions. I left the guys out of this equation because if they used their last condom & the viagra is still kicking in, they'll want to chance it. And why doesn't any one ask Ron Paul about his views on birth control &/or abortion? Isn't he the doctor in this group? He probably knows more on the subject than the other 3 combined. Former Independent Voter who will be casting her first straight party ticket & it won't be for the woman haters who think what's best for me.

@DM4O-So I infer to Deena that she is playing the race card here and you jump in and "molly-coddle"her with some BS to make her feel good. This fall back tool of the left is getting old. I for one do not hate President Obama.. I hate his politics. I hate the Chicago political team behind him. And I really take offense when the left makes accusations that our dislike for this administration hints of roots in racism. Its a load of Bull Pucky ! Get over it and move forward.

I see the republicans posting here sniveling about Mahers donation ( Good job Maher) yet they are a silent as a church mouse when billions are raised and spent by the wealthiest men in the world on behalf of the GOP candidates who want to completely destroy every last vesitage of the greatest nation the world had ever seen.
