Maher puts one-million dollars behind pro-Obama Super PAC

Washington (CNN) - Comedian Bill Maher is putting his money where his mouth is.

The comedian and talk show host who has long railed on the weakness of the Republican presidential field announced at a stand up comedy show on Thursday that he would donate $1 million to Priorities USA Action, a pro-Obama Super PAC.

“My surprise tonight is I would like to tonight announce a donation to the Obama Super PAC—which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name ‘Priority (sic) USA Action’,” Maher said. “I know, it was named by Borat. But tonight I would like to give that PAC one million dollars.”

The concert, which was live streamed on Yahoo!, was held in San Jose, California and was billed by Yahoo! as the first stand-up comedy concert to be streamed live online.

In a tweet after the event, Maher said the announcement was a surprise to the Yahoo! organizers.

“Thank u everybody who's hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!”

Maher, whose comedy show is called “CrazyStupidPolitics,” has not been shy about his opinions of the 2012 race and when he spoke with CNN's Anderson Cooper, he said that other than Ron Paul, the Republican candidates running for president have “horrible society killing ideas about America.”

“The rest of those people are, of course, selling their souls to the corporate interests who back them,” Maher said. “They all act like god created the world in January of 2009, and then Barack Obama completely screwed it up.”

When asked in the same interview who he thought was going to win the 2012 election, Maher quickly tapped the president as the eventual winner.

“My money is still on Mitt Romney,” said Maher when asked who the eventual Republican nominee. “And I think he’s going to get the nomination, and then I think Obama is going to beat him like a runaway sister wife, yes, I do.”

Maher’s million dollar donation will substantially boost the coffers of the Super PAC which raised only $58,815.83 in January, according to a report filed earlier in the week with the Federal Election Commission.

– CNN’s Matthew Carey contributed to this report.

I love how Republican nut-cases call Democrats the "leftist elite" in one breath and in the next say they're "all on welfare" – um, a bit contradictory, don't you think? Or are you saying that those on welfare are better than you? Might want to get your message straight, the general election is coming up pretty quickly.

Maher did a very profound thing by donating so much money to a Democratic campaign. All you Maher haters out there have probably never even watched one of his shows, or else you'd know he's a Libertarian. And keep blasting him to hell all you want... he's an athiest! And we athiests don't believe in such nonsense, so sticks and stones my friends!

Hola - I love Bill Maher, and think he has a great mind, BUT I cannot vote for Obama again. My family business cannot afford to provide healthcare for our employees, as mandated under Obamacare. We have been hit hard by the economy, and profit margins are very low. Obamacare would probably cause us to have to shut down, and lay off over 110 employees!
    ============================================================================================
The cold cruel reality of Obamacare that awaits the entire country in 2013 if Obama is not thrown out and the Senate returned to Republican hands. Even the unions and thousands of other Obama supporters got waivers to avoid this pending disaster so maybe you should apply for one as well to hold on until help arrives in Jan. 2013. If Obama is re-elected, 2013 will be a mega disaster economically between Obamacare and all of the tax increases.

I am starting to believe that the justices on the Supreme Court should be held to TERM LIMITS, just like their legislative counterparts.
Thanks to the SCOTUS – money talks, and you know the rest....

Maher likes to call himself a Libertarian. What a joke. He just wrote a million dollar check out to the biggest statist of our time. A man who supports the President having the power of preventative detention, Wants to keep the patriot act and wholeheartedly supports the TSA, who -FOR HEAVENS SAKES BILL – supports the continuation of marijuana prohibition and all of the civil rights and civil liberties violations that are inherent in that. You RAIL against the insane war on drugs endlessly, Bill. How about some PRINCIPLED political action and you stop the payment on that check and give it instead to the likely Libertarian Presidentyial nominee, Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson? Hypocrisy isn't becoming for anyone, Bill.

Why does truth get to post all this bs- oh that's right, freedom of speech. That pesky little thing the right wants to squash. Maybe is Bill Maher were a corporation that spouted the same kind of nonsense Victoria Jackson does you would defend him.

Nice try, but that's not how the ACA works. Seriously, you'd think the GOP/Teatrolls could do better with the index cards they hand you guys.

Ummm...setting aside that the opening premise is wrong...could you please explain to us how one man's beliefs not coinciding with another man's behavior makes the first man a hypocrite?

Thanks Bill, I watch your show all the time. It is actually the only reason I still get HBO, was going to switch to Showtime, but Fridays wouldn't be the same.. ( New Rules, rules)

If you haven't seen him, watch, Bill does make sense.. He gets on Dems also, but it is the Religious Right that takes the brunt of it, as they should.. People like Rick Santorum need to be exposed and Bill does a good job of that, plus he is funny..
