Washington (CNN) - Comedian Bill Maher is putting his money where his mouth is.
The comedian and talk show host who has long railed on the weakness of the Republican presidential field announced at a stand up comedy show on Thursday that he would donate $1 million to Priorities USA Action, a pro-Obama Super PAC.
“My surprise tonight is I would like to tonight announce a donation to the Obama Super PAC—which has the very unfortunate tongue-twister name ‘Priority (sic) USA Action’,” Maher said. “I know, it was named by Borat. But tonight I would like to give that PAC one million dollars.”
The concert, which was live streamed on Yahoo!, was held in San Jose, California and was billed by Yahoo! as the first stand-up comedy concert to be streamed live online.
In a tweet after the event, Maher said the announcement was a surprise to the Yahoo! organizers.
“Thank u everybody who's hit me up after the show, and a great San Jose audience. Obama donation was a surprise to Yahoo too fyi!”
Maher, whose comedy show is called “CrazyStupidPolitics,” has not been shy about his opinions of the 2012 race and when he spoke with CNN's Anderson Cooper, he said that other than Ron Paul, the Republican candidates running for president have “horrible society killing ideas about America.”
“The rest of those people are, of course, selling their souls to the corporate interests who back them,” Maher said. “They all act like god created the world in January of 2009, and then Barack Obama completely screwed it up.”
When asked in the same interview who he thought was going to win the 2012 election, Maher quickly tapped the president as the eventual winner.
“My money is still on Mitt Romney,” said Maher when asked who the eventual Republican nominee. “And I think he’s going to get the nomination, and then I think Obama is going to beat him like a runaway sister wife, yes, I do.”
Maher’s million dollar donation will substantially boost the coffers of the Super PAC which raised only $58,815.83 in January, according to a report filed earlier in the week with the Federal Election Commission.
– CNN’s Matthew Carey contributed to this report.
If Maher said he was a corporation, citizen, would you mind?
Hey, remember when we voted Obama into office and he totally changed the way business is done in Washington and did a 180 on all of Bush's policies? Yeah, me neither.
Despite all of his posturing, we're still in Afghanistan. Gitmo is still open. Iran is still merrily on its way to a nuclear bomb. The patriot act is still there, and they did their best to add SOPA to the list of freedom-killing laws. Nothing meaningful was done regarding climate change or reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Nothing meaningful was done to change the conditions on Wall Street that led to the economic collapse, and I don't see any bankers being held accountable. After a process filled with sleazy kickbacks and double-dealing, we were presented with a debacle of a health care law that is the worst of both worlds. The national debt is still skyrocketing while they patronize us with rhetoric about "taxing the rich," as if adjusting the upper tax rate slider a few ticks one way or the other is a serious solution to the fundamental problem of irresponsible government spending.
Honestly, at this point, I couldn't even tell you what Obama stands for. I expect that from these other idiots, but we were assured that Obama was different.
At this point I can't think of a bigger waste of money than giving it to a political campaign so these clowns can continue to play their little red vs. blue game at our expense.
If you think any politician in Washington is looking out for you, you're deluding yourself.
Good! To all you liberals who are annoyed that Obama didn't go as liberal as you wanted to, or even for that matter to the 'moderates' who think he was 'too liberal,' although I just can't picture that myself, let me put it this way: TAKE A LOOK AT THE ALTERNATIVES this election.
Chris... like so many people, you don't understand all you think you know about most things. Let's pick just one of your examples... "...killing the Boeing plant." Bet Boeing mgt and their customers, not to mention the many people working down there right now will be pretty disappointed to hear this...
If Maher had his way, the entire country would be a perpetually drunk, perpetually high, underachieving wasteland with no wealthy people and everyone equally poor.
Oh wait – actually Bill Maher has his way. He is exorbitantly wealthy by perpetuating this caricature of a supreme liberal to the audience that throws monies his way and praises his "talent", while he staggers around drunk in Las Vegas night clubs with women one-third his age. The portrait of heroism, no?
Don't trust atheists...look what they did to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe...
So Mr. Maher, I guess this means you can't find fault with the PAC sources of the Republican contributions when Bill Maher Comedy company gives that much money to a super PAC. I guess you then agree that unlimited contributions to PAC's are ok – even by corporations and unions??
Good move Bill. President Obama is going to carry both the House and Senate on his coattails in 2012. I remind the elderly, the middle class, and the poor that the Republicans have done absolutely nothing for them since gaining control of the US House in 2010. The Republican Motto after 2008 was "No Wins For Obama". Now, they are going to pay for misleading the Elderly on Medicare, the Middle Class on Poverty, and the Poor who now rank as the poorest class of any industrialized nation. Meanwhile, the 1% Club is getting richer.
What a waste of a million dollars.
If the Republican field is such a pack of losers, why does this joker feel the need to donate $1M to the opposition?
Aren't they supposed to pay HIM to spread their propaganda?
diridi : "made in the USA" – like all those solar panels solyndra had manufactured in China with your tax subsidy?
Oh, the irony of seeing liberals donate to superPAC's while they simultaneously b!tch about the evils of money in politics. A bit hypocritical, but of course they'll have a million and one excuses for why it's OK for them to do it.
If I had that kind of $$$ I would do the same to avoid the GOP nut jobs from taking over. THANK YOU BILL. Now lets have Maddow, Schultz, O'Donnell and all the others do the same. Happy St. Patrick Day. O'Bama all the way.
Oneyeopen, you are a complete idiot if you think Gingrich can offer gas for $2.50. He just wants your vote.
The Koch (pronounced like the synonym for a Rooster) brothers have that much in loose change in their sofa cushions. It's going to take much more, but if everybody gives $20, it adds up in a hurry.
I love Bill Maher, he should be the staple of rational thought whenever religion or politics are discussed. At least he is using his money for good instead of evil.
@ Denna- Keep drinking the kool-aid....like everything else this administration hands out, its free!
who gives a crap what this jerk thinks.
@Sniffit. Had the GOP/Teatrolls been to consider a single-payer healthcare system, you family would not have to provide healthcare for your employees. @ everyone else – Remember, Obamacare is REALLY TeatrollCare – the plan THEY came up with, and now want to blame Obama for – oh wait, I forgot, they wouldn't consider ANYTHING else the President was offering, and NOW they want to blame Pres. Obama for what they left him with. The GOP/Teatrolls signed off on Obamacare as an election tactic. The GOP/Teatrolls NEVER had any intention of working with the Black Man in the White House. If Joe Biden had been President and came up with the same policies, they would have LOVED it.
putting money where his mouth is? I don't want to know how he sticks a million bucks up his a$$. but he probably had a lot of practice.
@citizen: "Obama said he hated super-pacs and is always against the 1%. Maher is the 1% and giving to a super-pac for Obama. Obama is the world's greatest hypocrite."
When did President Obama say he was "always against the 1%"? Thinking they should pay their fair share (which 68% of millionaires and billionaires also agree with) is NOT the same as "being against" the 1%.
He doesn't like the Citizens United decision, but given that the Koch brothers have given $100 million to super-PACs to defeat him, President Obama is doing the right thing.
There is too much at stake to let back in power the party that took our country down the tubes, who puts their own, multinational interests ahead of our country's and who has lied over and over and over again to the American public.
As for Bill, I LOVE your show! You are one of the FEW shows that calls out the GOP/Teatrolls/Conservative out for what they really are – ANTI-AMERICAN!
Why would anyone care what a washed up un-funny out of work comedian has to say about politics.
Bill Maher is a holier than thou – know nothing – liberal biased hollywood eletist.
