Santorum plans fiery Friday night blows against Romney

(CNN) – Rick Santorum has been off the campaign trail since Wednesday's CNN Arizona Republican Presidential Debate, but he returns on Friday evening with a harsh critique of Mitt Romney on energy, the economy and his conservative values.

"Governor Romney described himself as resolute on that debate stage," Santorum is slated to say in Lincoln Park, Michigan, according to his campaign. "There's no question that he's resolute – trouble is he's resolutely liberal."

Billed by his campaign as a "major announcement" – not typical for a Friday evening – Santorum is to rip into his rival while Romney, who was born in Michigan, campaigns on the other side of the state, two hours away.

Santorum, who said "politics is a team sport" at Wednesday's debate, is expected to say Romney's "teammates were the Democrats."

"While Mitt Romney was pushing for the Wall Street Bailouts – I was fighting for the free-market system to work," Santorum is to say, according to prepared remarks released to reporters.

"While Mitt Romney was listening to the radical environmentalists about global warming and pushing taxpayer dollars to green energy companies – I was fighting to open up drilling in Alaska and expand natural gas exploration," he will continue.

Romney has criticized Santorum's "team" comment in his own stump speeches, telling voters in Milford, Michigan on Thursday that Santorum is typical "people [who] go to Washington and they vote for things they don't believe in."

"I'm not sure what's in the water, but they decide that they've got to take one for the team, or whatever they say, and they keep on voting for the same old stuff, and spending grows and grows over the years," Romney said.

On Thursday, Romney's Communications Director Gail Gitcho said "Back in 2008, Sen. Santorum endorsed Mitt Romney for president because of Mitt's 'conservative' record. Now, Rick's changed his tune. This sounds like another case of Rick Santorum abandoning his principles for his own political advantage."

- CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Rachel Streitfeld contributed to this report.

logicnLA wrote – “First- being liberal is a GOOD thing! It means you have an open mind and are open to change.” I would like to elaborate on that last position and point out that it also means you are able to work with change and be successful . This is one of the primary problems with conservatives. They despise change because they cannot adapt and compete.

  2. GI Joe.

He may get the far right radicals in the prmary, but he'll never get the moderates in the general.

Santorum and Romney were estimating their chances of winning the general election. They had seen the Rasmussen poll, which currently shows that Obama leads Santorum by 6 points and leads Romney by 7 points.

The idea of continuing solely on fossil fuels is foolish only because they are finite. Not thinking or researching other options shows the lack of imagination and understanding. This is under the assumption that the climate isn't changing, but the problem is that it is real.

@ Truth - it isn't the size of the "average liberal brain" as you think. It is their chance to getting into office. Their plans really increase the debt because they cut the amount of money to pay down the debt that presidents of all parties contributed to over the years.

    Truth,
Lighten up. Sniffit made a funny joke. Some free advice, don’t personalize your relationship with political candidates, celebrities or anyone else you don’t actually know. You will eventually be disappointed.

  7. Nothing new here

Santorum is in NO position to be worrying about who is too "liberal" at this point.
His own spending record speak volumes, and he has been outed for his hypocrisy.
The "liberal" media, Ron Paul, Miit Romney's team, and many others have done an excellent job of showing what a sick and corrupt person Rick Santorum really is.
His past words and spending record speaks for itself.

I see conservatives posting comments similar to Jr. High School trash talk – nothing but name-calling and sound bites. I'd like to have one them explain why the turnout has been so low in the primaries and how they hope to win without moderate or independent support. Could it be the teavangelicals have reduced the Republican Party to nothing more than a "hate club"?

Every day it becomes more clear the 2012 election will be a huge landslide for President Obama and eviction notices served to the Republican radicals in the Congress.

Ron Paul's line about Santorum being a fake must have stung so much that Santorum wants to try out a variant of that line on Romney.

It looks like Santorum has gotten desperate. I thought Newt was loco but it looks like his cousin Ricky boy has blown a gasket. These guys are exactly like the three stooges. Ron Paul is the best and brightest of the bunch. How can they sleep at night?
