Clinton predicts Obama re-election; urges Tunisians to ignore campaign rhetoric

(CNN) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sounded a confident note on her boss' reelection prospects in Tunisia Saturday, telling a group of Arab students President Barack Obama would be president for another four years.

"He will be re-elected president," Clinton said in Tunis. "I think that will be a very clear signal to the entire world as to what our values are and what our president believes."

Clinton was responding to a question from a Tunisian student named Ivan, who asked about the staunch pro-Israel stance nearly every American politician, both Republican and Democrat, espouse when they're running for office.

Clinton, a former presidential candidate herself, said campaign trail stumping often gains outsize significance that doesn't actualize when governing.

"You will learn as your democracy develops that a lot of things are said in political campaigns that should not bear a lot of attention," Clinton said. "There are comments made that certainly don't reflect the United States, don't reflect our foreign policy, Don't reflect who we are as a people. If you go to the United States you see mosques everywhere, you see Muslim Americans everywhere. That's the fact. So I would no pay attention to the rhetoric."

Republican candidates running for their party's presidential nomination often accuse Obama of appearing weak in his support for Israel.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said at CNN's Florida Republican Presidential Debate in January that Obama "threw Israel under the bus with regards to defining the '67 borders as a starting point of negotiations."

Romney added, "I think he has time and time again shown distance from Israel, and that has created, in my view, a greater sense of aggression on the part of the Palestinians. I will stand with our friend, Israel."

Fellow candidate Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, said at the same debate "we're in a continuous state of war where Obama undermines the Israelis."

Clinton said political observers from abroad should take cues about American policy from Obama, not from the presidential candidates.

"I would say watch what president Obama says and does. He's our president. He represents all of the United States," she said, adding she found it surprising people in Tunisia and other countries "pay more attention to what is said in our political campaigns than most Americans."

Clinton was in Tunisia meeting with other world leaders who oppose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

CNN Foreign Affairs Reporter Elise Labott contributed to this report.

I guess there are people that like us if they are worried about not having Obama in the white House.

This is the problem with the 3 1/2 year election cycle the GOP created. The do not understand the impact their unintelligent ramblings can be counter-productive to the current and future administrations. Newt's comments about not apologizing was stupid to say the least.

The election cycle and posturing should be limited to 12 months. Anthing else they should be sanctioned (forfeiture of delegate and electorial votes).

If I was an American oversees right now I would have to be concerned for my safety b/c the GOP do not care about the people they care about scoring the most harshest critique (most of whic are baseless).

There is not a single Democrat in America today who doesn't want to see their Conservative neighbors and their families harmed and even killed. America's National Socialist party wishes to replicate what their like minded friends pulled off in Germany, Russia, and China last century..

THe Nazis used the Newspapers and radio to spread lies and hate about Jews. What Steven Colbert is doing by acting out the Conservative liberals hate and lie about who in actuality doesn't exist anywhere in America, would have the Nazis in awe. The Democrat hate and propaganda machine of today is unequalled.

The Arab League to have greater involvement with the Syrian civil war – PERIOD!

Regarding Sec. Clinton's comments about President Obama's reelection: Just don't get complacent!

The GOP is doing everything they can to suppress the vote, from changing voter registration deadlines to exclude college students, to demanding photo ID where none were required in the past. It is absolutely necessary for every Independent, Democrat and thinking Republican to GET OUT AND VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA in November 2012.

Thanks HIllary. You are a class act and I wish you had been his VP, although I have no ill will against VP Biden. I was hoping for that first woman anything in the White House. Rethugs have seriously overplayed their hand to the point of looking silly. If they lose, it will be totally their own fault. The Rethugs have the weakest field I have ever seen. It is telling that Mittens is their inevitable candidate. :-)

Lets hope she is wrong about that Obama reelection thing. I would have felt better if Biden had said it. He has never been right about anything, of course you will not hear that on CNN or any other liberally biased media. They are sworn to uphold and maintain the current inept, incompetent, corrupt, union toady regime.

I respect her, and I do hope Obama will win again, but I sure wish she would cut that ugly, long hair. Long hair is virtually always unflattering to an older woman. It looked far better on her when it was shorter.

    And we better NOT forget……….

Hillary Clinton has got it right; she's the one that travels the world trying to keep peace – U Go Girl!!
And then you have the candidates out there on the campaign trail "destroying" our relationship around the world
They should keep their mouths SHUT; they do not know what is going on behind the "The Situation Room’s" doors
That's why we got Osama Bin Laden when most of them were most likely eating Burger King and asking for more!!!

Obama 2012 – Because Hillary Clinton has got it right and the rest of America will get it right!!!

Romney doesn't have any knowledge in foriegn matters,NASA...Hes a home spun idiot who talks just to hear himself.Truth, talked about passing down traits,in another blog, well Georgie passed one down to Mitt, how to screw your fellow man.Whether its a poor senior citizen, women, displaced child,he dispised them all.He would start a war with another country simply for population control,so that there wasn't an up swing in unemployement on his record. His foreign policy experience is ordering food at a Chinese takeout. He wouldn't help anyone across the water unless he could benefit from it.Israel won't talk to Mitt,he's to arrogent, snobbish for their tastes. He should get tips from Sarah Palin on foreign affairs,I heard she works cheap, and she can see the rouskies from her house. She can be his vp for a song, real cheap and she knows the campaign trail too, what a deal....

Maybe if we took democracy as seriously as other countries do, we would be better educated and not have many of the problems we have today. Voting is a responsibility and many people don't treat it that way.

People in this country, and abroad, should know by now that politicians will promise the moon in order to win votes. Anything to get a vote. And a few million $$$$ in the Super PAC doesn't hurt either.

Yes, Tunisians. Take it from a Canadian. Clinton is absolutely right. And so is Carville when he calls the current crop of GOP pretenders to the presidency "children on the porch". They are a pain.
