(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will receive Secret Service protection this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.
At this time, GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney is the sole candidate granted protection.

A spokesman for the Secret Service declined to comment on the matter when contacted by CNN.
Meanwhile, a source with Newt Gingrich's campaign confirmed the former House speaker also requested protection. The source did not know when the paperwork was submitted but said discussions about putting in the request began last week.
Gingrich's campaign has not yet received a response from the Secret Service, the source said.

The Secret Service should be protecting the American Public from him.
What are people threatening to use birth control on him?
Why should Americans pay for this? Perhaps he should ask the one percenters who he represents or the right wingers to provide it at their expense? How do we know if there really is a situation or something he and his people made up?
Another example of the GOP wasting the taxpayers money.... Santorum doesn't have a snowball's chance in hades of winning....
And how much will this cost (food,gas,air tickets, and lodging)? He can spend millions cutting everybody down (no wonder he needs protection for his on party).
Odd. The rules must've changed. During the 1980 campaigning, I flew Phil Crane on a campaign tour, accompanied by the Secret Service. At that time, ALL Presidential candidates had SS guards.
What a waste of taxpayer money. Poopy poo should refuse it. He needs medical help not secret service.

So he's basically admitting that he inspires enough hatred to require body guards at all times for fear of assassination.

I loathe Santorum's policies and as a Democrat I will do my best to make sure he is never elected. But don't have a problem with Santorum or any other candidate getting Secret Service protection. It would only take a couple of dead ones to further limit the choices of American voters.
Furthermore, we liberals would do well to remember that Barack Obama was the first candidate of any party to receive Secret Service protection before being nominated.

Why are we spending $$$ to protect these men ?? The man power can be used else where and that tax payers $$ should be used on the homeless and this countries kids. Not on Millionaires.
It's a sad state of affairs but no one should have to fear for their life to campaign..or fear to express their views..
We should be able to express our views without generating so much angry in the responses..
But the last few elections campaigns since 2008, are bring it all out, and each election is getting worse..
The Tea Party v.s.Occupy Wall Street, the 1% V.S. 99%...the have V.S. the have not ..
Those with a bright future, and lots of money the way things are V.S. Those with a limit future at best. .
Are the TV and Radio medias fanning the flames for ratings, or are the campaigners fanning the flames to get air time on our media networks...
It seems that only the most outrages claims, and political positions grab the headlines anymore ...
get the TV and Radio ratings up...bring in the expensive advertising money...
All this extreme talk from both sides, bring the blood pressures up on both sides....
Everyone feels they are losing something...the country is at a crossroads..
But this country is always going through changes...Remember this country has always been a big melting pot of different races, religions, political views, ethnic backgrounds, visions of the future...the new arrives fight for their place, with those already here, they fight for their foot hold, until a different new arrival shows up..everyone is trying to survive, or make it rich, or just hold on and not fall off the ladder, and have to start climbing back up again...
the Secret Service hasn't answered Gingrich yet, because they're not sure if he's serious!!
Isn't he supposed to be protected by God himself? Let's not waste taxpayer $$, Santorum claims to speak in name of God, let him be protected by earthly bullets from the all mighty power of God .. or doesn't he trust God?
