Source: Santorum to receive Secret Service protection

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will receive Secret Service protection this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

At this time, GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney is the sole candidate granted protection.

A spokesman for the Secret Service declined to comment on the matter when contacted by CNN.

Meanwhile, a source with Newt Gingrich's campaign confirmed the former House speaker also requested protection. The source did not know when the paperwork was submitted but said discussions about putting in the request began last week.

Gingrich's campaign has not yet received a response from the Secret Service, the source said.

– CNN's Kevin Bohn and Shawna Shepherd contributed to this report.

Why should my tax money go to protect him? Let him pay for it himself. I think for all of them if they want protection they should pay for it themselves. It is different then if they were already elected.

Odd. The rules must've changed. During the 1980 campaigning, I flew Phil Crane on a campaign tour, accompanied by the Secret Service. At that time, ALL Presidential candidates had Secret Service guards.

Question is why these men have decided they need the American taxpayers to fork up the money to protect their losing butts.

God help us if this nutjob makes it further in the presidential race. Thankfully, his GOP nomination would be a sure bet for another Obama win. This guy's extreme, fundamentalist ideals are from the middle ages.

That's nice...will he have them wear pantaloons and tin helmets like the Swiss Guard? Will he demand that they follow his faith? Will women be allowed to serve on the detail? Will he personally reimburse the government for the expense rather than accepting a "government handout"? Most of all,why does anyone think a guy who has ZERO chance of being elected is in any danger? we need some details here.

What does he need the Secret Service for, I thought he had god on his side? Almost like how the Pope travels in an armored Pope-Mobile.

I could think of any number of people who might be a threat to Mr Santorum, like women, gays, immigrants, poor people, atheists, in fact, just about eveyone.
