Source: Santorum to receive Secret Service protection

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will receive Secret Service protection this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

At this time, GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney is the sole candidate granted protection.

A spokesman for the Secret Service declined to comment on the matter when contacted by CNN.

Meanwhile, a source with Newt Gingrich's campaign confirmed the former House speaker also requested protection. The source did not know when the paperwork was submitted but said discussions about putting in the request began last week.

Gingrich's campaign has not yet received a response from the Secret Service, the source said.

– CNN's Kevin Bohn and Shawna Shepherd contributed to this report.

    Rick Santorum doesn't need Secret Service protection... God will protect him... or at least I'm sure that is what he believes.

    GOP candidates ALREADY wasting taxpayer money even before they get a NOMINATION to run for Peesident. And these clowns cry that Dems are spending like crazy?? Pot, meet kettle. Yep..."do as I say, not as I do.". Hypocrites. Clowns....all of them EXCEPT Ron Paul. I don't always agree with him, but he's the only one in the field who has his head screwed on straight and HE'S man enough not to need Secret Service protection, unlike those insecure weaklings Santorum, Gingrich and Romney.

    Which secret service?

    Some secret service not allowed to arrest U.S. Citizens in U.S.

    I thought, the secret service primary job is to protect all U.S citizens and U.S.
    Now, it seems, it protects only Two individuals.

    Does his secret service protect voters fraud too? If not, let US call them just bodyguards.

    What the secret service will do after they got hired for unprecedented future U.S. President?
    A) They will test all food and drinks, before their boss;

    B) They will closely monitor their bosses activities, including what is going on in kitchen and BEDROOM;

    C) It is a routine service, 3 agents, 3 shifts in 24 Hours;

    D) secretelly placing GPS tracking system in their bosses belongings, including in their shoes; This is like, the highest offender who is out on bail from U.S. Prison and wearing bracelet, to be monitored;

    F) ......

    E)

    There is a reason Insiders call him 'Seven-State Santorum', as if he is the GOP nominee, he will win seven states, and lose the other 43 to Obama in the biggest landlide since Regan.

    Oh, I'm sorry, I figured that, with Santorum being such a loud, outspoken evangelical Christian, that "GOD" would protect him. Yeah... that would be a great strategy except for the little glitch that he's imaginary (God, that is... not Santorum... he's tragically real).

    It's like the Pope sitting in a bulletproof cubicle on his Popemobile... and you've seen the sign. "The bullets are real, but your god isn't."

    With everything he has said about Obama, it is very classy of the President to grant this.

    Well, if they request SS protection, they should pay for it and then receive it. There's really no issue here. Just a recent Supreme Court decision regarding people as corporations.

    Can I have Secret Service protection too? I have as much chance of being president as Rick Santorum, and Mitt Romney for that matter. Santorum will lose New England, New York, Illinois, and the West Coast. Mitt Romney will lose the whole midwest, plus every blue state. The numbers just don't add up for either of them.

    This aggravates the hell out of me. Why should taxpayers be stuck with providing secret service protection to Romney and Santorum? At this point their campaigns or the RNC should be picking up the tab for their protection.

    I have no problem with the secret service providing protection AFTER the GOP nominee is selected. At this point these guys are just citizens trying to be their party nominee and it is not the duty of taxpayers to provide them protection.
