Gingrich zeroes in on Santorum in the South

Nashville, Tennessee (CNN) – Newt Gingrich zeroed in on Rick Santorum as a "big-labor Republican" Monday, and said the GOP presidential race is "going to redefine itself again" one week before crucial contests on Super Tuesday.

The longtime Georgia congressman praised his opponent's successful early state strategy but predicted on February 28 Santorum will lose to Mitt Romney in Arizona and Michigan, two states Gingrich ceded so he could focus on March 6 primaries that include his home state and Tennessee, where he campaigned Monday.

Pastor backing Santorum claims Romney is not a Christian

Lansing, Michigan (CNN) – A Michigan pastor who introduced Rick Santorum at a Monday campaign event in Lansing claimed that Mitt Romney is not a Christian and said Santorum is the one Republican candidate who can awaken "the sleeping giant" of Christianity.

Kent Clark, the CEO of Grace Centers of Hope, a faith-based homeless outreach facility in Pontiac, warmed up the pro-Santorum audience by calling the former Pennsylvania senator "a man who believes in a creator rather than we being the accidental creation of gas and dust."

GOP governors find common ground with Obama

Washington (CNN) – After attending a noon-time speech by President Barack Obama that focused primarily on education reform, many of the nation’s most conservative governors spoke to reporters outside the White House on Monday and said they heard some things they liked in the president’s message.

“We absolutely have to have the best educational system in the entire world, so I do agree with the need for educational reform,” Louisiana’s Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal told reporters.

Democratic mischief in Michigan

Washington (CNN) - It's no secret that most Democratic strategists consider Mitt Romney the GOP contender who poses the biggest threat to President Obama. It's also no secret that Michigan, the state where Romney grew up, is a must win for him.

Combine those two dynamics, add in the fact that any registered voter is allowed to vote in Michigan's open primary, and you get a recipe for Democrats to make mischief.

Number two House Democrat opposes own colleagues on oil reserves

Washington (CNN) - The number two House Democrat broke Monday with some of his fellow Democratic colleagues, and said he does not believe releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is appropriate now and it wouldn't help lower gas prices.

Last week three House Democrats - Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, Rep. Ed Markey, D- Mass, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn– wrote a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to release oil from the U.S. stockpile to reduce prices at the pump.
