Santorum robo call to Democrats: Send a message to Romney

Albion, Michigan (CNN) – In a sign of just how tight the GOP race in the Michigan primary has become, Rick Santorum is calling on Democratic voters to come out to the polls Tuesday and cast their ballots against rival Mitt Romney.

“On Tuesday, join Democrats who are going to send a loud message to Massachusetts Mitt Romney,” says an unidentified voice in a Santorum robo call to Michigan voters.

The Santorum robo call attempts to rally Democrats with a reference to Romney’s now well-known opposition to the bailout for U.S. automakers.

“Romney supported the bailout for his billionaire buddies but opposed the auto bailout. That was a slap in the face to every Michigan worker,” the robo call adds. It ends with the line: “Paid for by Rick Santorum.”

Michigan’s primary is open to all voters. For weeks, liberal bloggers have called on Democrats to cross over Tuesday to support Santorum as a way to damage Romney’s chances of capturing the GOP nomination.

A Santorum spokesman defended the overt attempt to lure voters from outside the Republican Party, saying the former Pennsylvania senator’s message “resonates with conservatives and Reagan Democrats alike.”

“We’re bringing those Reagan Democrats to our side,” Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley told CNN. “We figured if we can get them in the primary, we can keep them in the general.”

The existence of the robo call was first reported by the blog, TPMMuckraker.

A Romney spokesman slammed the robo call with a new twist on its attacks on Santorum's recent comment that he occasionally took "one for the team" during his time in the Senate.

"Rick Santorum has moved beyond just ‘taking one for the team,’ he is now willing to wear the other team’s jersey if he thinks it will get him more votes," Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said in a statement.

"We believe that Republicans will decide who wins Michigan – and we are confident that will be Mitt Romney,” Williams added.

How disingenuous of this Santorum. This goes beyond dirty politics. It's one thing to be dishonest enough to try this, quite another to pretend that it is something other than pure unadulterated desperate mischief. No democrat will ever vote for this goofball with all his social crazy. He knows it. I would expect this of Axlerod et,al., but not a serious Republican candidate. Ricky, you may be too cute by about half on this one. I would be even more offended if I were a republican Michigan voter. You are trying to get a democrat to cancel out my vote. Shame on you. I hope it comes home to roost with a vengeance.

This is a new low for you Senator Santorum. Don't hide behind the so-called Reagan democrats as your reason for this robo call. I hope true Republicans will see you for who you really are, win at any cost type of candidate. This reinforces the comments you made during the Arizona debate when you stated that you had to vote against your principles while you were Senator. You have demonstrated again, with this robo call, that you will go against your principles to win a State. Knowing what the democrats are doing, you're willing to play right into their hands....knowingly. If you truly believe that you're the only conservative in the race, then why don't you leave it up to true Republicans to vote you as the nominee? Even if you win the State, how can you claim that true Republicans are the ones voted for you? Winning by asking for the opposition to vote for you has no honor. Where is your pride in all this? Say what you will about Romney, at least he win or lose by appealing to Republicans and Independents...NOT DEMOCRATS.

Santorum, a Washington insider playing to Obama's sheep.
Santorum is less believable than Obama during the 2008 election. Ron Paul is correct that Santorum is a fake. This is an act of desperation on the part of Santorum.

Who is Santorum? Apparently his baring false witness isn't enough.
Who was Santorum before the Primary and who is he now? The two aren't the same. It's like he has more than one face. And the one before the Primary is back to doing his deeds now.

    Santorum getting endorsements from Democrats?
And he claims to be a consistent conservative?
    What a fraud he is!

It is just sad that Saint Orem cannot get enough Republicans to vote for him, so he is trying to get Democrats to come over and knock out Romney. Is he telling the Democrats that Romney is a bigger threat than he is. Or is he telling Democrats that Saint Orem would be easier to beat in the general election. Either way, appealing to Democrats to help defeat Romney is an incredibly badly thought out ploy.

There is just no way to spin this where Saint Orem doesn't end up looking like even more foolish than the average Republican Presidential Candidate. And that my friends is saying a lot.

Why don't play for audience the tape where Obama is talking to lots of unemployed Americans and says to them "in 60 days your life will change" and he said it poiting the index finger at them' Why don't you do that. Blitzer you had a lot to do for this president being elected. You have lots to do for the trouble this country is in! You pushed so hard for Obama being elected president that you're to blame for the ills and bad shape this country is in. You, Blitzer showed this segment twice that day. This tape in there some where. A reporter is supose to be neutral.

In one of the debates, when Romney was confronted about voting for a Democrat, he responded by saying he did it because there was no Republican on the ballot. He voted for Paul Tsongas against Bill Clinton in a presidential primary for Democrats.......So he had no problems causing mischief......so what's he complaining about now?!!

The Mullah's certainly approve of Santorum's desire to make the US a theocracy – just like Iran and all the other restrictive societies.

That's so funny. Dems will support Santorum only in that they want the absolute worst on the GOP ticket come November, so that it will fail, and here's Santorum playing into this like he thinks it might mean something else. Something like that they actually like him.

Does it really matter who wins MI/AZ or any other of the primaries/caucuses? The Republican party is a complete joke and disgrace. They're an embarrassment to the rest of the world.

As a Republican, I would prefer that our nominee be chosen by Republicans Mr. Santorum. If you can't get enough Republicans to vote for you, then you should get the Republican nomination.

its a sad day for the GOP when one of yr own presidential hopefuls asks for MI democrats to vote for his rival in the race...a clear message should be sent by all GOP voters by voting as a block for Mitt....only then will such bottom be avoided in future elections....this is a historical low for Santorum

Santorum knows none of the dems in Michigan who night cast a vote for him ... virtually none of them are going to vote for anyone but Obama in the general election. What a tool .... Utter complete loser. He wants it tooooo bad, which is why he'll lose. The man's ALREADY putting the country second, and himself first. Just think what a same-old same-old politician he would be as president.

This is nothing new. As I recall Limbaugh (and other Republican mouths) called for Republicans to do this in the 2000 primary to vote against Hillary.

Romney is a loser. I would never vote for a mormon. Santorum has the conservative credentials necessary for the next president of USA.
VOTE BO = More debt + More bowing to China + Moral decay
Vote Rick = Financial freedom + Restoration of American dream
