Biden hits Santorum over 'snob' comment

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden turned his fire on Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum Thursday, saying his recent "snob" comment about college represents a disconnect with the American people.

"I think there's an ideological divide between Rick Santorum and all of America on this. I don't think it's between the parties," Biden told Radio Iowa. "It's not about snobbery. It's about allowing people to live a life like their parents lived, in a middle-class environment, decent home, good school, a promise to send their kids to college and being able to take care of their parents and not have to be taken care of themselves by the time they're their parents' age."

Santorum recently categorized President Barack Obama as a "snob" for calling on every American to attend college.

"Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image," Santorum said last week. "I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his."

Santorum has said he supports different types of higher education, not just four year degrees, saying education should vary based on an individual's strengths.

But Biden, who is in Ames, Iowa Thursday for a speech, said college degrees increase the probability of success.

"Look, I've been going college campuses and high schools all across America for the past six months talking about what the facts are," Biden said. "Six out of the 10 jobs over the next 10 years are going to require … either a certificate or a degree beyond high school. It's that simple."

The vice president's remarks follow similar comments from Obama Monday, when he seemingly addressed Santorum, without using his name.

"When I speak about higher education, we're not just talking about a four year degree," Obama said. "We're talking about somebody going to a community college and getting trained for that manufacturing job that now is requiring somebody walking through the door handling a million dollar piece of equipment, and they can't go in there unless they've got some basic training beyond what they received in high school."

"It is too bad that none of the candidates, nor the President or VP, are promoting apprenticeship training, such as in the building trades."

That's exactly what Obama did in the speech in which Santorum has chosen to lie about!! It's too bad you don't know what you're talking about.

Oh please people! You have to work hard to earn a degree. Obama just wants to start handing out degrees like he hands out the government cheese. What Rick is trying to get across is that not everyone is suited for higher education. Since that is the case, you need opportunity elsewhere, such as manufacturing. Start handing out degrees like government cheese and then you'll be complaining that some college graduates can't read and were just pushed through the system...kind of like some of our high school graduates. Open your eyes! Not all people are destined for the same path and the same success.

No acknowledgement in the article that Santorum lied about what the President said? Perhaps it's just that Santorum, Romney, and all the talking heads lie so often that it's no longer news when the do it.

I totally agree with President Obama and V. Pres. Biden. The Republicans, Santorum specifically, are trying to twist the meaning once again.

And by the way Rick, perhaps you are unaware of the hard facts that only 4% of the unemployed affected by the economic crisis have a college degree! In other words Rick, the majority of those laid off do not have a college education! Hey Rick, see if you can add one and one! Incompetent republican!

All Santorum cares about is that his and everyone elses kids grow up belonging to a cult that worships an imaginary man in the slky.

Go get-em Joe! Used to be you'd make one little misstep when you were running for president and you'd be finished. Romney Sr. when he said he'd been brainwasher about the Viet Nam war or Edmund Muskie when he had a tear in his eye (or was that a melted snow flake) after the NH primary, or Howard Deen after winning the NH primary when he shook his fist and yelled "eeeehaaaaaw" in delight. Those were all big enough mistakes to disqualify those three gentlemen. Now, with the republican bar being so low – they can get away with making totally moronic comments about policy and maybe they loose 3 points in the next primary state – and that's it. None of the republicans is qualified to be president and they make it more and more obvious each day as they open their mouths and we find out how little there is in their heads.

@Charlotte – Your comment does not make sense on at least two levels. First, the President did not say he wanted everyone to go to college. He said he wanted everyone to get some sort of education or training past high school, because most good jobs have become somewhat technical. He said that could be four-year college, community college, trade school, or an apprentenceship. Santorum lied – pure and simple.

Second, where do you get the idea that "Obama just wants to start handing out degrees" or he is proposing to have unqualified individuals "just pushed through the system", leading to a situation where "some college graduates can't read"? This is pure fantasy on your part, which is typical of much of the criticism of our President. Purely made-up BS.

If Santorum worked as a guidance counselor at a public high school and made that remark, he would be fired. Liberals like to see comments like yours. It paints a clear picture of the hatred in this country, which most Americans do not like.

The republican party is about strengthening the status quo; they don't care about lower class citizens struggling to make it. The struggles of the working class creates a hegemony for the economic power players. And now Santorum is trying to brain wash us into believing that contraceptives are evil. He espouses that people have sex and populate the earth exponentially. The man is scary, and we should denounce him openly.

Every day I see more and more posts like this. It truly saddens me that there are so many hopelessly ignorant people in this country. Seriously how can someone be so stupid as to think that the POTUS has anything to do with people earning degrees. His message was about providing opportunities not results. Those are up to the individuals. Again, so sad that this level of stupidly exists.

When they are running for some public office (any public office) Republicons always promise to make things better for everyone. But what do they actually do once they get elected? They always make things better for themselves and their rich friends. And they always do it at our expense. So before you vote for more of the run of the mill political corruption, think about what it means to you and everyone else who isn't rich. Ask yourself this very important question... If you aren't rich, why would you ever even consider voting for a Republicon? Or a Dumbocrat for that matter, since they aren't much better. (They are a **little** better, but not much.) In the end, the root of every problem our government has is a direct result of the two party power struggle between Republicons and Dumbocrats. Now is the time to vote Independent. Make November 6th, 2012 your Independence Day.

Not one news article has correct quote the President yet. He said that he wants every American to have the OPPORTUNITY to go to college. We wasn't mandating that they all go. And he certainly won't be "giving away diplomas" as some of the wackier commentators have suggested. He's simply trying to create a country where anyone who is qualified and has the desire to attend college ash the chance to do so. And the reason is if we don't those "6 of 10" jobs that he's talking about will go somewhere else...like to a country that actually values education.

Nope, I would agree with omitting it. There is a grey line between reporting the news and analyzing the news. Once you start analyzing the news, the article become less of a news story and more of an opinion piece.

Of course santorum doesn't want people educated. Educated people are less gullible to fall for his insane rhetoric.

Rick's dream is to keep us dumb and uneducated so we will vote republican. He doesn't want us to go to a college, interact with people who have ideas different from ours, to listen and perhaps learn other points of view. Keep to the narrow minded, strictly "religious" teachings he wants us to beleive and Rick will be happy. If he is a Christian, I want no part of it. Obama/Biden 202.

Santorum was right, and Biden shows what "snob"s he and Obama are. Obama up there touting manufacturing jobs in MI. Guess what, everyone having a degree will turn us into India. Very educated, no jobs. Then we will have to migrate to a new country. In the words of Judge Scheals, the world needs ditch diggers too. Obama the fraud. Biden the gaffe buffoon.

No doubt Obama just wants to turn a four year college degree into another federal government entitlement plan. I mean who would deny a poor child a free education when we have all these evil rich and greedy people and businesses that can pay for it? Yes, and he can use the Commerce Cluase to force you to go because liberals know what is best for you and the collective.

Obama never said every kid should go to college. He said every kid should get some type of education beyond high school, whether it be college, a junior college or a trade school.

But it's easy to see why Santorum is anti-education. You'd have to be a complete idiot to vote for him. He's trying to build his base.
