Biden hits Santorum over 'snob' comment

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden turned his fire on Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum Thursday, saying his recent "snob" comment about college represents a disconnect with the American people.

"I think there's an ideological divide between Rick Santorum and all of America on this. I don't think it's between the parties," Biden told Radio Iowa. "It's not about snobbery. It's about allowing people to live a life like their parents lived, in a middle-class environment, decent home, good school, a promise to send their kids to college and being able to take care of their parents and not have to be taken care of themselves by the time they're their parents' age."

Santorum recently categorized President Barack Obama as a "snob" for calling on every American to attend college.

"Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image," Santorum said last week. "I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his."

Santorum has said he supports different types of higher education, not just four year degrees, saying education should vary based on an individual's strengths.

But Biden, who is in Ames, Iowa Thursday for a speech, said college degrees increase the probability of success.

"Look, I've been going college campuses and high schools all across America for the past six months talking about what the facts are," Biden said. "Six out of the 10 jobs over the next 10 years are going to require … either a certificate or a degree beyond high school. It's that simple."

The vice president's remarks follow similar comments from Obama Monday, when he seemingly addressed Santorum, without using his name.

"When I speak about higher education, we're not just talking about a four year degree," Obama said. "We're talking about somebody going to a community college and getting trained for that manufacturing job that now is requiring somebody walking through the door handling a million dollar piece of equipment, and they can't go in there unless they've got some basic training beyond what they received in high school."

Biden should shut up. The only thing that Obama and Santorum have in common is that they both really want Santorum to get the nomination.

Joe Biden just tells it like it is.

Dick Chaney was THE ultimate embarrassment as a vice president... arrogant and with no class whatsoever.

I'm wondering why Santorum is not volunteering his time at church instead of becoming rich on politics. I think he could do a lot of good helping people to act right on his behalf.

"And there are people in this country that have their eyes, or minds, so closed they want to keep the current administration in power to continue their country damaging policies."

And what policies would you be referring to?

It's about time somebody called Santorum out. He is an idiot who lives in a weird reality. He is also prissy, snobbish, and very arrogantly "holier than thou". I am a very devout Christian, and have never heard of some of his backward beliefs, so am not at all sure what Bible he reads.

    @ The Real Tom Paine
Its clear Santorum knows this ( with 3 degrees), yet is arrogant enough to manipulate and twist the truth to play off of people's fears. Its sick and twisted.
    ------------------------
Tom they are ALL sick and twisted precisely because they KNOW BETTER. That's what leaves me livid: THEY KNOW BETTER than to say and do the things they are saying and doing, yet they consciously take this route nonetheless. That's just plain evil. They gear their rhetoric to the lowest common denominator; to the most racist amongst them; to the least educated; to the most willfully ignorant; to those that fear anything that doesn't look, or talk like them. This is who they are pandering to. Look at the "usual Con suspects" on this thread, they mirror image their politicians. They too know better but prefer to wallow in the muck, and propagate lies to further their agenda.
I wish to thank the Santorums of our political world and their myopic equally repugnant followers for punctuating the differences between them and our statesman President. They have turned out to be the best re-election ad FOR President Obama, bringing more Independents AND Republicans to his side of the equation. People who over the past 3 and 1/2 years have had the opportunity by simply observing the bizarre, hateful, and unpatriotic behavior of the GOP to see that God spared our country when we elected Barack Obama from a terrible, terrible fate.
We have the best President for these turbulent times in President Obama. He brings out the best in us, and inspires all of us to reach for the stars, and to hold tight to the best in US. And it is our civic duty as patriotic, tax-paying, loyal citizens of this great country to re-elect him.
    Obama 2012.

Dude in Colorado - You mean the 10.8% unemployment in December of 1982 under Saint Reagan? After he had been in office for 2 full years? The "record"?
    -------------------------------------------------------–
Really Dude? REALLY?!! A 30 year old unemployment rate from a long dead president?!!! YOU have got big brass ones my friend! Not even I, the great almighty master of smoke, mirrors and snake oil would DARE such a legendary leap of nonsense. I'd like to offer you a job on my Committee to Perfect the Ultimate Smoke/Mirrors/Snake Oil. You show great potential.

Totally agree with Santorum on this. Not everybody needs a BA. In fact, I know more people with worthless BAs than tech certificates.

  9. A California Conservative

It is a simple fact of life in America these days that if you do not get a college education, you are doomed to working in a go-nowhere job, for low pay. There is nothing snobbish about encouraging people to get a college education. All the countries we are competing with in the world push their kids to get good educations. If we do not do the same, we will lose our place as a world leader. If you think Santorum is correct, then go ahead, try to get by with that marginal high school education. You will find yourself working long hours, probably at several jobs, and when the layoffs come, you will be among the first to get kicked to the street. Santorum has proven time and time again he is an idiot. This college-educated conservative would NEVER vote for Santorum. I want fiscal conservatism, not foolishness.

  11. Respect Please

    Dear Ms. Schwarz,
Why is you can address the vice president as VP Biden but when you talk about the President you just say Obama. I would think that with the position you hold at CNN you would want to set an example for the youth of this country and at the very least future employees at CNN. Lots of people comment on how disrespectful our youth are and it turns out they are disrespectful themselves. I'm hoping this was just an oversight on your part, and I'm not trying to be mean. But if we truly want to be the best America we can be we have to treat each other fairly. And one way to do that is to treat the office of the presidency the way Americans always have, with Respect...Regardless of what party or person happened to hold the job.

Let me guess, chico, those " people with worthless BAs" make more than you do, right? Please, at least TRY to make a decent case for mediocrity and present us with real evidence to make the case for less education. Who is going to determine who is worthy of that? You? Santorum? Please let us know.

My hate for Santorum has grown by the day. People need to realize this man is a total buffoon. I agree that a vote for Santorum will be a vote for Obama. The outer fringes of the Republican Party will vote for the buffoon. What about moderates and independents? The Republican party has become the party of repression if Santorum has his way.

We here in Canada sit back and watch the GOP race and laugh and then shudder. How could a dufus like Santorum even get to first base with his arrogant and bizarre beliefs. He is scary on so many levels. Then there is Romny who has not connected with the GOP and will never connect with the bulk of the American people. Newt is just an angry old white man and Ron Paul is past his due date. Thank goodness America's neighbor up north can count on four more years of President Obama and not one of the GOP wonderlusts.

LOL

News flash, the GOP wants a less educated electorate so that their ideals are not challenged by anyone they cannot label a liberal. Santorum is devoid of any sense of reality and those that support him should not be allowed to taint the gene pool. Of course he thinks college graduates are snobs, he home schools his children. Would love to see the look on their faces the day Daddy drops them off for 4 years of higher learning. Lastly, if we had a more educated (and productive) populace, we would likely not even be in this economic crisis.

Lots of comments, like many other blogs, come from people who don't know what they are talking about and get they're only information from people like Rush Limping. Jobs? Obama's push to save the auto industry, with a massive loan, did just that and saved a million jobs. AND all the money was paid back. Unlike the Bank bailout under Bush, that saved banks and allowed them to give their executives big, big bonuses and limit loans and mortgages to people like Joe the Plumber. While it may be hard for the unemployed to see, the economy is improving. Back to the auto industry, General Motors just had they're best quarter ever. If you want a relapse of the economy, if you don't mind the "1%" getting richer while you get poorer, if you don't mind not being able to afford medical care, if you want your child to die in Iran, then elect Santorium or Romney. Either one will watch out for the rich, the oil barons and that now famous 1%.

The only time I ever remember education being considered wrong is when the slave owners didn't want blacks to learn to read and write. How pathetic that a Presidential candidate with a degree would say it's wrong to better one's self. These repubs don't care what they say or do as long as they can get President Obama out of office. How sad...

Biden's time would be better well-spent trying to figure out a way to lower gas prices between now and November. Santorum may be accused of snobbery over his comments, but he won't be blamed for $5.00 a gallon gas.
