Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

This is not an apology. This is an attempt to placate enough people to let this blow over. The only thing Rush is sorry about is losing advertising dollars.

Limbaugh now says he was trying to be humorous? Excuse me while I laugh at this as being the the ONLY remotely funny thing the man has ever said.

The hate-filled, vituperative, misogynistic, intolerant, un-Godly propaganda spewed by Limbaugh is in NO WAY humorous. It represents a true threat to the ordered society and informed discourse necessary to a strong democracy. Even those in his own wing of the political spectrum are distancing themselves from him, calling him "crude" (Paul) or worse.

Now we can add disingenuous to the list of descriptors, but we might well have started there.

I usually ignore this obnoxious blow-hard so i don't know if his followers still call themselves "ditto-heads", apparently proud of the fact they can't think for themselves and let this over-privileged slob think for them. "Ditto! whatever HE said!"

Too little ... too late! American women (and men) heard your words, Rush ... we won't forget and we won't forget that the GOP candidates were too cowardly to confront and denounce you and your ilk.

You can't throw feces at a person for several days to a national audience, and get off with an apology. Unleash the lawyers!

Yeah...sort of like an abusive spouse "apologizing" after beating the stuffing out of the other. If it looks like a pig and oinks like a pig it must be Limbaugh. Try and get an apology out of me, windbag.

His "apology" is meant only to win back lost revenue from being dumped by so many sponsors. The man is vile.

I still do not see where he apologized in his comments. Maybe contraception should not be paid for under federally backed plans, but it is unnecessary to launch a verbal attack against an individual who exercises her right to have access to the so called benefit. He continued his attack on subsequent days. Limbaugh is just another right wing blow hard who has had his foot stuck in his mouth more often than not. He is now only making this statement due to the pressure put on him by public opinion, the Republican leadership, and maybe his production company. He has no true remorse for the comments he made. Think before you speak would be a sign of intelligence. Right Rush?

I do not know if Sandra Fluke will accept Mr. Limbaugh's apology or not. That is up to her. I seriously doubt the sincerity of his apology considering he stuck by and continued to build onto his statement for three days. Call me a cynic, but I think he is only apologizing because he is losing sponsors and because even the Republican candidates have made negative comments, tepid though they were, regarding Rush's defamation of Ms. Fluke. That they did that is amazing considering that Republicans are usually in agreement with him or are too spineless to speak out against him. My guess is that women are starting to abandon the Republicans to such a degree at this point that both the Republican Party and Rush are starting to realize that their misogyny will likely lose them the White House and, if there is any justice in this world, both houses of Congress.

Limbaugh recanted because the GOP turned on him as well as corporations telling him they were withdrawing their support of his hate-mongering program. As the old saying goes, "Money talks, and Limbaugh saw millions in endorsements going out the window. He's full of horse pucky! Liar! Liar! Pants on fire!

He's apologizing for the "choice of words" not for the message they conveyed. What kind of apology is that? Oh yeah, it's not one.

So, he's not apologizing for What he said, or WHY he said it, but rather for HOW he said it? His "apology" is meaningless.

Yeah, it was wrong. But, at least you had the decency to apologize. I would never expect it from someone like Bill Mahr after calling Palin a "dumb tw*t." I hope the left will one day see itself for the hypocrisy that it is.
