Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

You did mean to attack her in spite of what you indicate in your apology. Your apology is too little too late.

It's bad enough that this sad excuse for a man insulted this young lady, using the vile terms he did, but the real insult was the fact that he lied about what she said, using his lies as the justification for his insults. And then, as if that wasn't bad enough, the lukewarm disclaimers from the result of world right was even more insulting. Shame on the whole GOP. You people have completely lost the bubble on decency and fair play. The fact that you're not collectively ashamed makes your complicency even worse. Have you no shame? This episode alone would have decided the November election for me, if I hadn't already recognized the fatal shortcomings in this sad excuse for a party.

Good for him. He needed to apologize for what he said. That's not the kind of language we need to be using in any kind of discourse.

Rush Limbaugh is a pathetic, black hearted, odious, drug addled, admitted criminal, bloviating fool, a pitiful excuse for a human being that makes blood money by dividing the country, and demeaning women.

I do not mean that as a personal attack on Ms. Limbaugh.

I guess losing sponsors started to get to him.

American women are going to remember the Republican war on women's health care in November.

Well lets just say I could see this coming from 6 miles away, the fat guy with the big mouth works in the world or radio, the company he works for is owned by Bain Capital and well we know who is a big shot with Bain Capital. The guy the fat man has been supporting. Thanks Rush for helping the president get re-elected! Do us all a favor and take the next 10 months off. Go eat some pain pills, hire yourself another illegal nurse and lets hope its your voice that goes next. You have become a joke and a anchor to the GOP.

Can someone please explain to me why Limbaugh thinks he or any other tax payer would be paying for Sandra Fluke's contraceptives? Sandra Fluke pays for her health insurance. She just thinks that contraceptives should a covered benefit like thousands of other drugs.

That said, if an organization isn't going to cover contraceptives, they shouldn't cover maternity services. Pregnancy isn't a medical condition. It's a side effect of a personal choice.

Apology not accepted. This man should be fired for his remarks. They were totally rude, crude, disgusting and insulting. I am astonished that the FCC does not pull his license. If he does not resign, then his sponsors should pull all of their advertising from his show. He should not be rewarded for insulting behavior.

Yeah right. If some of the Republican Conservatives didn't rebuke him, he would've continued haranguing this young woman for weeks to pander to his talk show ratings base.

Doesn't sound like much of an apology to me. It's more like a "I'm sorry my sponsors are leaving me, so I better stop the bleeding."
