Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

"I did not mean a personal attack..." Really? This was explictly a person attack designed to degrade and defame this woman. Limbaugh stood by his words, then changed his tune as soon as sponsors abandoned ship. This "apology" is obviously driven by financial considerations and not the development of a conscience.

"After consistently attacking Ms. Fluke for three days, ratcheting up the defamation each day, I suddenly had an attack of morals and decided that it was amazing that anyone could have taken this seriously. This has nothing whatsoever to do with advertisers pulling from my show. I'd also like to extend a serious apology to the entire GOP for losing them the women's vote in 2012 and any hope of winning the Presidency."

I've just read his "apology" and it is anything but. He is a phoney windbag and his supporters are no better.

Why is CNN not posting comments? Are they also afraid of Rush?

his apology is empty and unremorseful...he meant every word he said in his wednesday rant. he is just trying to save face because of the advertisers pulling out. i hope the advertisers stick by their decision. also, birth control is not just prescribed for preventing pregnancies,it is prescribed for other female problems as well. i wonder what his reaction would be if the religion-affiliated universities and hospitals refused to pay for viagra/cialis.

Too little, too late....and he's doing only because of huge pressure from the social media. Perhaps someday he will genuinely respect women and will offer a sincere apology.

Any politician, man, woman, Republican or Democrat or Tea Party that does condemn Rush Limbaugh for his phony ( actually outright lies) statements about Sandra Fluke should resign their positions.

An apology from this skumbag is absolutely meaningless and I'm quite sure insincere. Damage done, pig man.

Fluke should just remind everyone that Limbaugh is a junkie. She'll never need to retract that statement because everyone knows its true.

Rush, I will defend your right to disagree on policy and your first amendment right to free speech to my grave, but I will never believe you that you did not mean it to be a personal attack on that woman.

You are a bully plain and simple. You sit in your studio insulated from everything, in control of the board being able to cut anyone off or insult them if they disagree with you. I don't think you will ever be able to have civil discourse with anyone. Nor do you have the guts to say it to most peoples faces. You sit in your hermetically sealed chamber blaming everyone else for your addictions, yet vilifying other addicts for being "weak".

You may be a big important radio talk show host, but you know nothing about being a real man, father, husband or brother.

Limbaugh is such a pig. He's apologizing only because he doesn't want more sponsors to pull their advertising from his show.

I'd love for Ms. Fluke to sue this pompous bag of gas. I hope she does. Sounds like a defamation of character suit, at least.

What a phony apology! Rush totally ignored the fact that he totally mischaracterized Ms. Fluke's comments and the fact that he called her out by name indicates that he did mean to personally attack her. And the excuse that he found discussing contraception before a congressional panel absurd, and the catalyst for his attack on Ms. Fluke, is laughable. Did he find it laughable when the GOP arranged a congressional panel to discuss contraception?

Too little too late. I will continue to boycott all of his sponsors and push for his removal from the air.

Though I don't think it will happen, let's hope this absurd incident will be the death knell to Limbaugh's career. Even the Republicans seem to be turning on him.

    Of course he 'apologized'

His sponsors, the source of his absurd wealth, were abandoning ship.

"Word Choice," it goes way beyond word choice! The apology is not sufficient! He must have lost a lot of sponsors. People should hold his sponsors feet to the fire so they do not come back.

What's this? Another extreme-winged political idiot who's "apologizing" for things they said (and obviously meant) publicly? How many times have we seen someone make some insensitive, racial, bigoted, or just something that shows their true intent and nature, and somehow they are all of a sudden "sincerely" apologizing? Yea, of course he's so sincere about it.
