Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

He lost three sponsors, then decided to apologize. This means, what?

He is a pig! He only apologized when his money started being affected. As more and more women complained to his advertisers and he realized that he was going to be losing his money, then he apologized. It is empty and meaningless. What an ass!

Didn't mean to make a personal attack? This is an absolute lie. How much more personal can you get? This apology was inevitable once sponsors started pulling ads and stations probably waned him as well. We must keep up the pressure until he either completely changes (not going to happen) or is off the air. This cannot be tolerated. Free speech is fine-but advertisers and stations need to stop supporting this insulting, ridiculous, very intelligent but damaged and narcissistic butthead.

Good for you Rush for apologizing. I only wish the likes of Bill Maher, Ed Schultz and others on the left would to the same. The names they have called Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin and other conservative women are beyond vile. But then no one expects liberals to have a change of heart or a conscience.

So he only apologized when the uproar occured – not because he actually meant the apology. Nice, Limbaugh.

Limbaugh it is such a shame that you have no respect for women. I will never listen to your show or use the sponsors on the show again!

I took oral contraceptives for a year because of fibroids and painful periods. This is why men need to leave these decisions to women and their doctors – especially idiots like limblaugh.

I guess losing advertisers changes ones perspective. Did not mean to insult her? Limbaugh is an insult to humanity.

Where did he make this apology ? On his radio show ? In a open field ? In the bathroom at home (He does have indoor plumbing, doesn't he ?) ? Or did his "apology" come to CNN via a Burning Bush ?

The only thing more repugnant and offensive that his comment is the bogus apology. He says he didn't mean to insult her?! Listen to the tape, in context. YES HE DID mean to insult her. He insulted her, any every other woman in this country who has ever used birth control either as contraception, or out of specific medical need. His belligerent, blind ignorance on the topic caused great harm, and he compounded that harm FOR THREE DAYS by expanding his insults to her and anyone who supported her. He "apology" is less than worthless. In his studio there is a logo on the wall that reads "EIB" for "Excellence In Broadcasting". SINCE WHEN?! There can be no "excellence" so long as a belligerent fool like Limbaugh continues to broadcast bile onto he airwaves.

Any extremest, left or right, act like fool when try to make their point. What positive was accomplished by extremest? Hitler, Stalin, McCarthy and many other dictators on one side and Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and many other moderate leaders on the other side. Rush Limbaugh could learn from them, but he might not make the millions that way! Now-days being moderate does not bring $.

" illustrated the absurd with absurdity"!?! What a cop-out. The man is too cowardly to stick to his position, which he tried to do until it affected his wallet, and yet won't acknowledge or address the real issue in any meaningful way. Spineless.

To call this an apology from Mr. Limbaugh is absurd. That was the most left handed apology I have ever heard. I have a list of companies that sponsor his show, and as long as they continue I will not patronize their company or their
products. The only way anyone can get through to this man is through his sponsors. This so called apology is way too
    little and way too late.

    Mr. Limbaugh,
You are apologizing because your sponsers were pulling out left and right. You are apologizing for the sake of your wallet and not from your heart. Hopefully you have learned to button your lip.

What a lying rat! Limbaugh meant everything he said and only offered a backhanded apology when he was soundly condemned for his comments.Isn't he a great spokesman for the republican party.

Yeah... that's believable! "I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.” If his sponsors hadn't threatened to drop him, and the GOP threatened to "drop him like a hot potato, he NEVER for one nano-second considered an apology!
