Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

Humor? Sorry, I don't buy it. Just one more case of foot-in-mouth disease for this low-life.

To Mr. Limbaugh: I, for one, am happy to pay taxes for contra – ception so that people who know themselves, and understand their limitations/resources/desires, can refrain from having and raising kids or postpone it. I think the government should be too. And there's no doubt I would totally welcome the government paying for me and others to enjoy s e x and have lots of it; now that's a government this "s l u t" could adore! Aside: Why is anybody in an uproar or surprised that this man would make such a comment?

This isn't an apology. He says that his word choice was "not the best". No. It was a very publically delivered personal attack in the most vile terms on a smart young woman who was making a valid policy point. He also smugly noted that his comments caused a "public stir", showing that he only cares about his ability to gain the limelight.

It must be hard on Rush to choose the wrong words 100% of the time. Maybe he should just stop talking.

It's funny that this apology comes just after reports that you are about to be sued for libel.

Rush Limbaugh is what he has always been – a self serving, arrogant, ignorant panderer for the right. His apology can only be seen in the context of the reputation he enjoys as a shrill shill for extremists who are trying to destroy real democracy in America and replace it with theocratic, right wing (gee, sounds like Iran) apologists for greed, lack of compassion or common sense, and downright meanness – none of which our forebears fought and died for. They wanted us to perfect the Union, not destroy it with right wing facism that seeks to silence any opposing view point. shame on Rush. Shame on those who support him, And, by the way you guys – real Americans will defeat you.

Sorry old boy, but you did mean every disgusting word. You followed up your words on two other days. You could have said you were sorry on the fisrt day but you continued your diatribe for two more days. that says all we need to know about you.

He is NOT sorry. He aplogized because the companies that advertise during his show threatened to pull thier adds. He stands by his comment & everyone knows it. He views this as a attack by the elite liberal media. People like him make me proud to be a progressive liberal.

by the way, I forgot to include that his apolgoy is not manly, not anything but cowardly because his motivation in expecting thinking Americans to believe that he did "not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke" is only to protect his own butt. He knows he crossed the line of American decency, but only because it was explained to him. He did what he is and now the coward is backing away. Stand up, Rush. Be the man you really are. Don't let a bunch of liberals back you down.! Ha ha ha! You are a jelly fish buster – big belly and no spine. Unmasked so that even a few of your right wingers can see you for the foolish man you are. Ha!

It's a half hearted apology, too little and a few days late. I'd say the boycott must be working.
