Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

I sincerely hope that Rush Limbaugh continues to show his true colors, and those of the GOP. Rush and the GOP would love to take this country back to the pre-suffrage era, when women were considered inferior. He thinks this poor girl's parents are ashamed? I would be proud to have a daughter that stood up for what she believes in. Ashamed? Imagine being Rush's daughter...that's the definition of ashamed, and of "shamed." Rush has some obvious personal Oedipal issues he needs to address. Rush, please continue to demonstrate what the "O" in GOP stands for.....OLD. This strategy should work out great for all of you in November – GOP theoretical strategy discussion: "Hey, I have a great idea, let's alienate 50% of the population of the United States. Females shouldn't be allowed to vote anyway."

...... Well said Joe ....... and her parents as well as countless women should be proud of her .... good thing all Rush's wives used birth control ..... now women across america will know where to put their "x" in November ..... thanks Rush ... u alone just pushed Obama to the top of the leader board ....

I have never listened to his show, and have heard enough talk about it over the years to even think I would want to listen to it. But I will most certainly find out who sponsors his show and I will boycott those products and make sure everyone I know understands why I am doing so.

She's an activist? So what? So is our republican Supreme Court. All activists push for what they want. What are all of the candidates? What are YOU?

Did he truly apologize? No, he did not. And this lame attempt at an apology only occurred after he lost six of his major advertisers. I hope the trend continues. This man is a hypocrite – one who proclaims to be a Conservative Christian but has been married four times (not including the out of wedlock liaisons that required him to use Viagra prescribed for someone else), a drug addict, and one who regularly indulges in one of the Cardinal sins: gluttony. He has been a preacher of hate for too long. Hope this is the beginning of his end.

Apologize? Rush Limbaugh doesn't even know what the word means. He meant every single word he said and it probably wans't until sponsors started pulling ads, and some attorney friend told him him he could actually get sued for this, and the stations threatened to suspend him that he said to himself, "Hey this is serious".

This will be proven when Rush makes his next vicious comment about someone or something. Then the press will cover it again, everyone will starting screaming, and Rush with bowed head and Limbaugh smirk will apologize again.

He knows what he is doing. Just like in court when a question is asked and answered, an objection that is sustained really doesn't mean a thing. Everyone has already heard it.

This would be a far better country if Rush would visit Sarah Palin and they could sit on the porch and look at Russia.

Rush Limbaugh is just an entertainer who makes FIFY million dollars a year because he draws millions of listeners. Even if he's run off the radio, he won't be hurting.

I highly doubt Rush is sorry, he is only saying that because his sponsors bailed on him. He is an egotistical moron who is convinced that he is God's gift to humanity. His ego needs to be knocked down a little.

Attempt to be humorous? What an disingenuous apology. The fact that people still listen to this guy for anything meaningful is mind boggling.

his so called apology came after sponsers took adds off his show or threatened to. This was no apology and the republican candidates did not come out against his remarks forcefully so as not to offend his loyal viewers. The remarks where incorrect and had nothing to do with what the young woman testified too. The repo party is out of touch with women and have no guts when it comes to standing up for what is right. If they can be lead by the nose by a radio host how can they make major decisions about wars and social issues in this country. ??? Vote Obama/Biden 2012

Why should taxpayers pay for contraception???? Seriously this is absurd! This is one of the reasons this country is so far in debt we will never catch up and end up being like Greece. A country that cannot pay its bills and has to keep borrowing from China. Eventually this house of cards that the libtards keeps insisting on building up will collapse. And all of these free things that the freeloading libtards of this country keep getting will be gone because we simply can't afford it. Unfortunately most liberals are too stupid to really get a grasp of 3rd grade math to understand that once you keep spending more then you take in, you eventually go bankrupt. You need to stop spending money on the unnecessary things.
