Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

Trying to pass this off as "the attempt to be humorous" only makes Rush more of a coward. I didn't see anybody laughing then, Rush, but I'm sure they're laughing at you now.

It's not enough for Limbaugh to apologize. He must be held to a higher account. Financial sponsors should drop him. Limbaugh needs to be silenced.

Attempt to be humorous? Really? As stated above he should have been taken off the air long ago, but surly after making the comment he did and if not now from this lame response of "attempting to be humorous”- then I think I just give up on civilized society allowing this buffoon to continue.

Rush Limbaugh may say, "It's just entertainment. It’s comedy. It’s my style.” Sorry. That's not entertainment. That's not style. That's hate radio. We watched him say those words. He was incensed. That was not comedy. If he were in government, he would be forced to resign immediately or be fired, and rightfully so. Apparently, his advertisers don't want to be associated with him, either. A tepid and contrived apology means nothing.

I hope the stations that carry his programming will show some integrity and suspend him from their airwaves for the next month... or much longer. Why is he allowed to slander that young lady on a national stage? She would be perfectly within her rights to sue him and I sincerely hope that she does just that. Sue him, EIB, and every radio station in the world that carried his vitriolic diatribe. He went too far, empowered by stations and advertisers that have blindly supported his rhetoric. His actions make me sick...and that's no laughing matter.

No call for his choice of words, but I don't want my tax dollars paying for someone's birth control, condoms, lube, or whatever. If they can't keep it in their pants, they just need to abstain or pay for it themselves.

He "doubled down" after the first insult, and now he expects this half-hearted apology to be taken seriously?
He's only doing it because sponsors were leaving in droves.
Everyone should boycott any company advertising on his show.

Limbaugh: "I didn't MEAN a PERSONAL attack on Ms Fluke".

Yeah – right – ROE, ROFLAO

What a total waste-of-space this man is – pontificating in fron of his "Golden EIB Microphone" ("EIB = "Excellence In Broadcasting" – LOL, talk about an oxymoron) – bragging about being proven "right 98% of the time by an independent survey (easy to do when you only talk about things with which you agree – BUT EVEN THEN WRONG 2% OF THE TIME).

Makes me want to throw up every time a caller gushes and grovels with "Oh it's SUCH an honor to talk to your MR. Limbaugh".

Who are these people complaining about their "tax dollars" paying for her birth control? She's not asking for Medicaid. She wants our PRESCRIPTIONS to be covered by the INSURANCE PREMIUMS we pay.

By the way, your outrage about wasted tax dollars would be a lot more convincing if you had raised objections when Viagra became covered by health insurance–which, of course, you did not.

So Rush posted this so-called apology on his web page? Well I'm sure that Ms. Fluke reads his web page on a regular basis so she is sure to see it.
