Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

Rush Limbaugh doesn't deserve a comment, on this story or about anything he says...so I will stoop beneath myself and say I believe his apology is about as sincere as his handshake; after listening to him or touching him, the victim should always delouse. He is a vile, miserable, filthy-rich miscreant whose entire life has been lived only to spew bile and divide those who should be united in their common love for this country. I would call him Mr. Potter, after "It's A Wonderful Life," but at least Mr. Potter had some redeeming qualities.

It could be much too late for this less than sincere apology. Motivated by no doubt the fact that his once sponsors have started shutting down his gravy train. He is definitely due for that Costa Rica move.

He has lost over a dozen of his sponsors in the last two days

If you've been part of the effort to pressure his sponsors – nows the time to 'double down' on the ones who haven't cancelled......

Limbaugh is an extreme. Eater, Blowhard, and Phony. He's only apologizing because sponsors are pulling their money from his show. He should go eat another piece of cake and shut up.

So Limbaugh has offered a half-baked apology which still insults women and fails to show any humility or admittance of fault. Just wheedle words..... I suspect he is only doing this as most of his sponsors are withdrawing support and he sees his income being threatened. There are many sites where you can find contact information and lists of his sponsors. Please go to one of them and personally put pressure via e-mails or phone messages on all of those that have not yet withdrawn their support for this hate-monger. Even your taxes are supporting him as the Department of Defense is a sponsor for AFN – is that how you want your taxes to be spent? The grass root campaign is definitely working – let's put this increasingly irrelevant person out of business once and for all. A civil society can do without incivility from the likes of RL

Sorry Mr. Limbaugh, but you are a disgrace to conservatives, liberals, independents and decent human beings everywhere. Absolutely disgusting.

    THIS IS NOT AN APOLOGY

Rush used the weight of his media empire in an attempt to crush a poised and quiet spoken young lady who was only trying to explain the unfairness of a GOP policy that supports men's free health coverage for vasectomies; but seeks to remove women's health coverage for contraception that also serves to help women with many other irregularities.

Rush could have apologized on Wednesday when he first made the "crude" statement. But he waited three days until he lost several big-money high-profile sponsorships, thereby impacting his company's bottom line. Only after his pocket was impacted and the threat of birth control crisis getting worst did Rush offer a 'worthless insincere spin-filled apology'.

This guy makes real conservatives look like clowns.
Real conservatives want things like less government and lower taxes.
For some reason, the voice of real conservatives is overshadowed by guys like this.
I predict President Barack Obama will be re-elected because the leaders of the Republican Party have no clue what real American conservatives want.

You know I just realized in all this outrage..we still have a voice. We can still make a difference, we put the pressure on through twitter, reddit, facebook, and the people made the difference. Our outrage was heard, and the most amazing thing was it didn't take protesting on the streets, we used our voice over the internet and we went straight where it hurts, the advertisers! Now we know what works, and that we actually have a voice and an opinion that may dwarf big money if we come together.

Its quite late Mr Limbaugh, I sincerely think you need to go further than just a mere apology. The damage is been done and you need at least to go the University and apologize in person. Some of the people in the GOP must voice their opinion against such actions. In order for this country to move forward, people must steer clear of misogynistic comments and show more respect for all human beings regardless of their gender or the color of their skin.

That's an "attempt" to be "humorous?"
    On what planet?
You illustrate the absurd with absurdity?
What was absurd about Ms. Fluke's testimony?

Your apologies are as empty as your head.
What, did the FCC threaten to yank your broadcasting license if you didn't apologize?
Maybe you ought to be sincere about it, but you're not sincere about anything, are you?

I don't believe for one nanosecond that Mr. Limbaugh didn't mean what he said. This man makes a living by bringing out the worst in people's feelings. His connections to the Republican Party will hurt its chances in the elections. For GOP leaders to hide behind the facade that Mr. Limbaugh is just "entertainment" then it begs the question what their definition of the term is. Mr. Limbaugh should be sanctioned severely for his crude remarks, as should anyone in the public square that uses such uncivil language.

Not good enough! It is finally time for him to go. This is a sham apology that only happened becuase the boycott of advertisers for his show is working.

Keep it up! America will be much better off getting rid of this cancer on reasonable political debate.

This "man" truly thought he was invincible. He only apologized because his sponsors were pulling the plug on him. He's a disgrace to the human race. Oh, and Romney gave a too late, lame response when asked about this fiasco. He chose safe words so he wouldn't "offend" Limbo and all his listeners. All I have to say is Obama 2012!!
