Limbaugh apologizes for ‘slut’ comment

(CNN) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh apologized Saturday for calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" this week after the Georgetown law student advocated for contraception coverage in a Democratic hearing.

“My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir,” Limbaugh said in a statement on his website. “I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.”

Limbaugh made the original comments Wednesday, in which he also suggested Fluke wanted taxpayers to pay for her to have sex.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex."

His remarks set off a major outcry, prompting top Republicans and Democrats alike to denounce the famed talk show host.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support, while Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum labeled the comments as “absurd” and Ron Paul described them as “crude.” Mitt Romney said Limbaugh's words were "not the language I would have used."

But Limbaugh repeated his comments during his show on Thursday and Friday, even taking them further to suggest that women who accept free contraception should film themselves having sex so taxpayers could watch.

In his apology Saturday, Limbaugh said he disagrees with the notion that contraceptives should be covered under federally backed health insurance plans, saying he finds it “absurd” that Americans are “discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress” and argued taxpayers should not “pay for these social activities.”

But Limbaugh admitted Saturday his choice of words referring to Fluke were “wrong.”

“For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”

Limbaugh's apology does not seem to me to be a real apology. Rather, it is faint and half-hearted. His joke was just not understood.

His words do not seem like an attempt to be humorous – rather they seem full of unwarranted assumptions, leading towards his goal of character assassination.

If he can stop someone else from speaking out, he will have won.

Often times it's not the definition people have a problem with. It's the word. So, be careful about the words and make sure the definitions fit the context.
Fluke is now a celebrity and her career has now been launched. Perhaps she can thank Rush for that.
She may now even be this election's 'Obama Girl'.

That wasn't even remotely resembling an apology, suing for slander is needed. Rush never looked at the video or he just lied about its contents

I still strongly believe, that Rush Limbaugh should be sued and fired from his talk show. Its time for Rush Limbaugh to go. Rush Limbaugh doesn't care, who he hurts and what he says. He is a totally embarrassment to the Republican Party, network and to himself. When he made that comment or comments, toward the young college student, he also was saying it to all women. Sounds like to me, there will be thousands of listener's, that won't be tuning into his talk show anymore, including advertisers or sponsors. Its time for Rush Limbaugh to go, the faster the better. Is that what Mr. Limbaugh calls an apology? More doublespeak and back-pedaling from one of the biggest hypocrites around. Vitriol and hype…….Why is he still on the air?

Limbaugh comment as wrong and cold as it was ..pales in comparison to what a federal judge posted about our presidents Mother .. his post implied that since Our presidents mother a white woman slept with our presidents father a black man ..she would sleep with anything even a dog ...where the post says "your lucky you dont bark" how can this man sit on the bench and decide cases if he is this racist and hateful .. he would have to recuse himself of any case in which a female or a person of color is involved in the litigation

Hmmm...So just yesterday Limbaugh stated that he found the outcry over his crude comments "hilarious." Suddenly, he is apologizing. Could it be the loss of at least four advertisers changed his mind :) As women we need to stand up for ourselves against Republicans like Limbaugh. It does work.

Limbaugh joins Santorum and Romney for insulting, inappropriate word choices, but not for the insult. What kind of a non-apology is that? Slander is not included in "free speech" guarantees, and these rude flakes are not included in civility.

Wait a minute, "over 20 years"?? Is that possible?
Has the discourse been down at the gutter level for that long?
    Ugh. That's a sad statement.
What kind of a horrible world are we living in?

Boycott his advertisers + let them know why!

Yes, Rush used the absurd to describe the absurd. Would I have said what he said, no. That does not mean he does not have a point. Why is a 30 year old law student going before congress to testify about the lack of contraception at a college she went to knowing that there was not contraception provided for in the healthcare plan? She went there because of that reason too to fight it. (not only that reason, but one of them) Why would you go to a college that you knew did not provide contraception unless you wanted to cause "trouble"? Also, where did this issue come from? There was not a word about contraception unitl a couple months ago. There was never a mention or push to ban it so way is this such a big deal? Contraception costs as little as $9 a month an it is readily available so where is the issue? Basically to me it seems like people see an opportunity to get a freebie and want it.

Does Mr. Limbaugh have a wife, lover, daughter, or mom, or female relatives/friends? I wonder if it matters......or if the apology is linked to mitigating the potential loss of advertising revenues/sponsors or the consequences of a prospective legal response by Ms. Fluke?
