BREAKING: Obama: 'We have a window of opportunity' with Iran

(CNN) - "We have a window of opportunity" in which Iran's nuclear situation can be resolved diplomatically, President Barack Obama said Tuesday in his first formal news conference since last year.

"It is deeply in everybody's interest - the U.S., Israel and the world - to see if (the Iranian nuclear situation) can be resolved in a peaceful fashion," Obama added.

Asked to elaborate on his Monday statement that the United States "will always have Israel's back," Obama said, "historically, we have always cooperated with Israel with respect to the defense of Israel, just like we do with a whole range of other allies ... It was not a military doctrine that we were laying out for any particular military action."

As for the ongoing unrest in Syria, the U.S. taking unilateral military action in response to the situation, "or to think that somehow, there is some simple solution, I think is a mistake," the president said.

The inadvertent burning of Qurans at Afghanistan's Bagram Air Field, and the violent protests that followed, "concern me," Obama said. "I think that it is an indication of the challenges in that environment, and it's an indication that now is the time for us to transition (power to the Afghans)."

And when the window closes and the Iranians haven't given you squat then you'll say once again you don't bluff. But the Iranians know you're an empty suit that leads from behind. They have no intention on giving up anything. They laugh at you.

I just don't understand why you didn't just have them over for dinner and work your svengali like magic on them and get them to dance to your every wish. Don't they know who you are?!! Better start developing troop redeployment plans out of Afghanistan and west through Iran.

What other softball questions did the state-run media flunkies toss at their hero at his rare press conference?

They still aren't taking the crazy iranians seriously. Their goal in life is to destroy Israel and the US. What part of that is so difficult to understand? Diplomacy will work with the iranians just as good as it will work with a suicide bomber. They have the same mentality.

I am trying to understand where are these war-happy folks live? Are you in my neighborhood? Do your kids go to school with mine? Since when is egging on a war a responsible, patriotic thing to do? Feel free to carry your guns (and religion) right on over there and shoot the whole country up yourself, but leave those of us working to create a better world in which to live out of it!!!!

Take the time to resolve this situation with all involved. DON'T DO like George W Bush and the Republican did with Iraq. They started a senseless war and KILLED a lot of our young men and women.

Senator McCain should tell us where he will get the money to fight in Syria and Iran. He want to wage wars everywhere without funding them. What a lunacy?

Everyone know that Iranians are as crazy as right wingnuts. But, if we can avoid a war, contrary to the republicans' saber rattling and threats, a peaceful solution is the way to go.

Republicans want a war, so they can send the middle class and the poor off to fight for them.

Window of opportunity, huh? That sounds like Obama-talk for "I'm kicking the can down the road and leaving the problem for my Republican successor. I did it all the time by voting present in the Illinois State Senate".

And Republicans still aren't looking at the world realistically. George W. Bush had the same problem. He thought that the US would be welcomed in Iraq like heroes, just like they were welcomed in Kuwait a decade before.

Republicans are misleading the public into believing that US firepower has always kept Iran from a nuke. Wrong. It has always been Saddams's military that kept them away from a nuke. Once Bush removed Saddam, the natural check and balance on Iranian aspirations was removed. Bush did nothing to replace it because he couldn't. After bungling Iraq, he couldn't simply invade Iran claiming nuclear WMDs. And thanks to Bush, we still cannot do it today. Not that we would want to anyway.

Truth and Nothing But the Truth, Sr you are certifiably nuts. Irrespective of the nonsensical, trite, dribble you steadily spew on this blog, our Presidents approval numbers are high and trending higher. This must be frustrating to a man who earns a living trying to diminish the sitting president of the United States.

President Obama is the leader of this greater nation and likely to be viewed historically as a great and successful President. His gift for leadership is far from “svengali like magic”, rather it stems from a highly educated, unassailable honesty and the ability to explain to Americans in a credible manner.

In the past, you have referred to our President as "a snake in the grass". No Sir, you are in denial and reflecting your own questionable motivation. You who sits in obscurity, pushing lies and hatred for a $, diluting the public discourse with your visceral, nonsensical logic…. you Sir are the “snake in the grass.”

Good job Mr.President! So "Idiotic of Gop to rush into a huge war? I have to say that I think Israel is getting to "Jumpy" about this also? The Iranian Regime "Knows", the President is not bluffing, so does Gop,and so does Israel. Let the President be the "Cool Head" in this situation!! Obama 2012

All the ignorant retards in the GOP better wake up and smell the coffee- we all recall how GWB/Cheney were brandishing vidoes and slides as fake evidence of Iraq moving WMD but not a single one was found not even trace of it. The same FOOLs are out now calling for war with Iran. Later they would blame a DEM president for the financial impact from war spendings. God will deliver America from the Republicans ..Amen

Where the heck do you get this nonsense??? Saddam's military and the Iranians were engaged in human wave land battles and almost trench warfare in a very small part of southern Iraq and southwest Iran. Iraq wasn't flying bombing raids all over Iran. Honestly, making up these fantasies to try and blame Obama's failures yet again on somebody else. The leftist smoke and mirror show just never ends....

Wolf Blitzer does what the liberal press does so well, omit important questions that went unanswered, only report on what fits into your agenda. So your actually lying by omission.
