BREAKING: Obama: 'We have a window of opportunity' with Iran

(CNN) - "We have a window of opportunity" in which Iran's nuclear situation can be resolved diplomatically, President Barack Obama said Tuesday in his first formal news conference since last year.

"It is deeply in everybody's interest - the U.S., Israel and the world - to see if (the Iranian nuclear situation) can be resolved in a peaceful fashion," Obama added.

Asked to elaborate on his Monday statement that the United States "will always have Israel's back," Obama said, "historically, we have always cooperated with Israel with respect to the defense of Israel, just like we do with a whole range of other allies ... It was not a military doctrine that we were laying out for any particular military action."

As for the ongoing unrest in Syria, the U.S. taking unilateral military action in response to the situation, "or to think that somehow, there is some simple solution, I think is a mistake," the president said.

The inadvertent burning of Qurans at Afghanistan's Bagram Air Field, and the violent protests that followed, "concern me," Obama said. "I think that it is an indication of the challenges in that environment, and it's an indication that now is the time for us to transition (power to the Afghans)."

No!! Not again!! Do not let these war mongering GOP end of times enthusiasts continue to fuel the hatred. Someone put tape over the GOP candidates mouths and shut them up. Their over the top rhetoric is a destructive force.

the middle east countries seem largely silent on Iran, at least based on what I see in the US media. It would seem they should have a vested interest.

NOTE TO republicans: Historically, everytime you want to talk about war, you need to talk about paying for it. You need to make the case for raising taxes to fund your war mongering. If you can`t sell the American people on the COST BENEFIT analysis [including an assessment of the loss of US life] then don`t waste the nations time.

Oh and another thing; put your OWN children`s lives on the front lines. Mitt, Rick, Newt, I`m talking to you. Joe Biden`s son has already done a tour in the Middle east war zone.

I wonder what will be the left excuse when a mushroom cloud appears over Israel and at least one city in the US, from a nuke that originated in Iran? A country who's leaders have said from the beginning they will destroy US and Israel.

Bob, three years ago Pres.Obama said we can't talk with the Iranians forever, do you think for one moment they take him seriously, they are laughing, he spoke about the rhetoric that is said during campaigns, did he not do the same? I will do this and I will do that, hope and change, the only time he spoke the truth about what he will do was when he did not have a teleprompter. High gas prices, redistribution of wealth, but not from his supporters.

Seriously Truth, are you okay? You're capable of making rational points, I've seen you do it, but your comments are becoming increasingly erratic and paranoid. Is there anything we can do to help you?

Let me advise, Israel is playing drama as usual. Be very strict on it. If Israel wants to go to War with Iran, let it go alone, and face consequences. No USA involvement. No wars. Enough of Wars.

Drew!!!! Obama is a Democrat. As for war mongering, Democrats lead us into WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia and Libya. Clearly, the Democrats have the lead.

What evidence do you have that Iran has the capability to launch a missle and have it reach the US? If you think they are going to smuggle it in then the problem is not really Iran it's border security.

I too am glad we have a rational stable adult in charge instead a gun toting cowboy. He understands that if it can't be resolved peacefully, we are all going to pay a price for war, so he wishes to avoid it if possible. He understands that Iran will have to believe the same thing or this is going to end badly. He's prepared for peace and also for war. Let us all hope and pray, if you so choose, that cooler heads prevail and diplomacy is successful.

The window of opportunity has to make sure Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich just keep quiet about these delicate, complex international issues about which they know so very little. These issues remind us that the President is bright and they are not. Their comments are only to bring down the President – not to find solutions other than bombing Iran. Grow up, Republicans, and just go home. Your immaturity and silliness make us all very tired.

Just watch "Nobama" will be using a war with iran to justify envoking the "right of presidential authority in a time of war" to postpone the 2012 election / his removal of office.

    @ Fair is Fair

Honestly, Fair, I'm sorry to hear about your son but I applaud the fact you do actually have someone in the military unlike your hero (Willard and his son's) who scream war while running from it. Having said that–I know I am right on this issue. Many people including, YOU underestimate our president but while you're doing that he is "taking care of business". I trust his judgment.
    Peace.
