Obama makes alternative-fuel vehicle push

New York (CNNMoney) - President Obama outlined new plans Wednesday to support the sales and use of alternative-fuel vehicles - including cars and trucks that run on hydrogen and natural gas instead of just those that run on electricity.

The plans are part of a $1 billion National Community Deployment Challenge intended to support the use of natural gas and other alternative fuel technologies, in addition to plug-in vehicles. The president also announced separate incentives to encourage individuals and businesses to purchase alternative-fuel vehicles.

The question republicans are asking, "But how will this help the Kochs?"

Natural gas has a chance of succeeding. Focus on that FIRST. We have LOTS of it here and there is a developed infrastructure to handle it. Hydrogen is more pie in the sky, just like the coal powered Volt. More of a long term R&D effort.

Looks like Obama has FINALLY discovered fossil fuel solutions, just in time for the election. Go figure...

Way to Go! God bless you, and America. We needed this long time ago. Ultimately dreams come true. I am voting for you and campaigning for you. Obama2012.
PS: Republicans sell-out to Saudi pulled this nation to GROUND. They are worst than Taliban, and Al Queda. True.

I`d love to see a commercial where an unfaced politician grabs the hand of a US soldier, takes out a Bowie knife, and cuts it allowing the crimson liquid to flow into a 55 gallon drum.

The voice over would say; "Every barrel of Mideastern oil contains the blood of American soldiers". SUPPORT OUR TROOPS. Kick the oil habit.

Ever wonder why Mittens wants to break 40% of republican votes in primaries? Because 40% is the new majority in the senate.

If oil companies had any sense, they would take the lead in developing alternative forms of energy so that they could monopolize it. But, that means sacrificing short term profit for longer term gains. Gains that may not even be realized before the current crop of top executives leave the companies.

Over the past three years President Obama has worked hard for the American people while the GOP has been working hard against the American people.
President Obama has the right plans for the US to keep progressing toward a better future, and away from the GOP policies that took us so far backward and exploded our deficit under Bush and the Republican bullied Congress – then & now.

How's the Chevy Volt doing? What, they had to shut production down for 6 weeks until they figured out how to sell them?!?

But the government is going to subsidize these vehicles to the tune of $10,000 each? Where's all this money going to come from? This big government Cash for Gas program is already giving me more gas than I can handle. Looks like Warren Buffett is going to have to ante up and cancel the tax dodge plan he worked out with Bill Gates.

Saying "We have LOTS of [natural gas] here and there is a developed infrastructure to handle it" is even more a lie than saying there is such a thing as "clean coal".
This claim is just more propaganda being pushed by the right-winger hacks and corporate elitists.
Recklessly fracking up our water purifier while pumping extremely toxic chemicals underground and then pumping out even more toxic chemicals to get to the natural gas is extremely dangerous. This process needs to be studied by objective scientists who are not slaves to the oil/energy companies. We need very cautious and never let the “anything for a buck GOP” and their “only for profit” corporate masters have control again.

@Four – Volt is a bit pricy compared to the Prius, which has sold over 1 million units in the United States (2.4 million worldwide) over the past eight years.

..or 1 step forward and 2 steps back by overfunding technologies based on their political appeal instead of free market demand? Like Solyndra... overfunding a bad business plan by Obama pretty much squashed that entire industry in America. Now it's tough for American solar panel companies to raise money. 2 steps back. That's a very good reason to keep government out of private industry.

Absolutely. I agree. Political appeal is much easier than market demand. Free markets are much better at picking and supporting the right products than politicians.

"Looks like Obama has FINALLY discovered fossil fuel solutions, just in time for the election."

Yeah, because President Obama has never before said we need to look at all energy sources or improve MPG for gas powered vehicles.... Oh wait, you're lying yet again. If you're getting paid by the lie, you must be a millionaire by now.

Well, it has to be asked based on past Obama Adminstration performance. How many Obama campaign contributors are investors in the companies getting all the tax payers money??? And has a proper financial review of these companies been done?? And will the taxpayers be left holding the bag if these companies go belly up like Solyndra did?

Problem is Obama always says one thing but does exactly the opposite. He's the master of smoke, mirrors and snake oil. There are hundreds of examples over the last 3 years. Even before he was elected he lied about accepting public financing of his campaign. He's become a bit of a joke, like the pathological liar from the old Saturday Night skits.
