BLITZER'S BLOG: Depressing situation in Afghanistan

(CNN) – The situation in Afghanistan seems to be going from bad to worse despite 10 years on the ground for hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops, diplomats, private contractors and aid workers who have rotated through the country. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent.

The commander of all U.S. and NATO forces, Gen. John Allen, was upbeat in an interview with me Monday. “The campaign is sound,” he said. “It is solid. It does not contemplate, at this time, any form of an accelerated draw-down.”

Bring our troops home. We have damaged al Qaeda severely, and we cannot even protect our own women against republicans here, let alone Afghan women against the Taliban.

"BLITZER'S BLOG: Depressing situation in Afghanistan"

You could have just stopped with "BLITZER'S BLOG: Depressing situation." Seriosly man...get some prozac or lithium or something. You're always "concerned" about such-and-such or "worried" or "depressed" or "frightened" etc. It's pitiful really. Can you not write an interesting enough story about an interesting enough topic that you don't need to try to grab clicks by trying to tell people you have something "concerning" or "frightening" or "depressing" to tell them. I mean really, the ploy is just way too transparent.

  3. Dominican mama 4 Obama (the real one)

I am glad President Obama is our Commander-in-Chief. I fear that had it been anyone else this situation would be beyond our reach, it is quite tenous as it stands. But let's be frank, at least the people of Afghanistan are more apt to believe that our current Commander-in-Chief is more sensitive to the atrocity that was committed. Obama has demonstrated empathy to the world's problem. No longer are we being represented by loud, brash, boisterous, and arrogant. My sincere condolences to the surviving families of those killed by this nutcase. He put his brothers in arms, Americans in that part of the world, and his country in additional danger through his murderous act. May justice be swift, and sufficient.

Buffoon Obama announces a withdrawal date at the same time as announcing a ramp up of troops. Total insanity. ALL of the troops killed and wounded over there during this time were needlessly killed and wounded and are on Obama's clueless hands. If you're not in it to win it, then just say so and pull out. But Obama and the Democrats were trapped by their own political rhetoric and for that reason and that reason alone more US troops were killed and wounded. November can't come soon enough to get rid of the Buffoon-in-Chief.

Truth – does this men that the 5000 troops killed in Iraq, the 45,000 wounded troops, and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed are on Bush's hands? I think so too.

This war was started by Bush, in case your memory needs an update. We are dealing with this in the best interest of teh Afghan people. We will support them through the end, and the President is doing all he can to remedy the current killings and it will be justice. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and with the hearts of the Afghan people..

Truth you know how we got in the war dont you. The War criminal Bush got us in this war. Stop trying to blame the person cleaning up the mess and look at the guy who made the mess. Eigjt years of stupidity cant be wiped away in three no matter how hard you try people wont forget you anti american president 2 wars at the same time. The guy was out to get richer and make his friends richer and our country is still suffering. Obama should have never tried to compromise with any of the homemade terrorist in congress. War on women war on old people war on the middle class war on the poor. Next the war on american soil that is the goal of the republican party.

one thing here is for certain, no matter WHAT Obama does the GOP will be against it so be ready for it. If he brings the troops home sooner you'll have the war hawks saying he "cut and ran" even after 10 years. Plus I find it funny that all these GOP candidates that are now clamoring for our troops to come home BLASTED the President when he brought the troops home from Iraq. Just shows you the GOP mantra...go against Obama no matter what he does.

"..all the troops killed and wounded over there during this time were needlessly killed and wounded and are on
    Obama's clueless hands".
You are the buffoon, Truth(less). You know very well that if Bush had finished the job, and not abandoned our
troops in Afghanistan, this thing should and would have been done before Bush left office. Bush/Cheney,
neo-cons, Rumsfeld, all have blood on their hands. They started both messes, did not finish them, and now
OUR President is cleaning up after them.
Our troops have done their jobs for ten years, and continue to do so. Saying they died and were wounded
needlessly is a slap in their faces. I'm sick of your nonsense, and hateful words, you "clueless" jerk.

honeybe: I stand by my statement. We stand a MUCH better chance of getting through this fiasco with Obama at the helm than with his predecessor or ANY of the Clownish Cowboys that the GOP is running. Fact. Your and Truth's hatred of this man on the other hand crosses the border into a dark, and pitiful netherworld from which you won't emerge until 2016. Flashlight?
    Obama 2012.

@Truth and Nothing But The Truth- You are in GOP denial about the truth.

Your own party VP nominee, Palin, thought we were in IRAQ because of the 9-11 attack on the US. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What a joke the teaparty and GOP is...

So NONE of you clueless Obama rear kissers will admit that the last two years was a total WASTE of time, men and money because the clueless dolt in the Whitehouse? This proves how insanely delusional you all are. No matter what happened before, when you're in a war as Commander-in-Chief, you're goal should be to win it as best you can. What military or political leader announces to the enemy when they plan to pack up and quit fighting??? NONE, except Obama, the Dolt-in-Chief.

Obama will go down in history as the president that lost Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt and more to come. I hope Iran doesn't pull anything while Obama is still in office because I'm sure he'll muck that up as well. I'm sure he already has a surrender date in mind.

We got Bin Laden. The bad guys from Sept. 11 are actually hidding in Pakistan. After the horrible killing, burnings, urinations we are creating more terrorists with our presence. We need to pull out as soon as possible. Our troops are stressed by the long term conflict where we have soldiers help farmers grow crops but at the same time a stressed out soldier kills innocent children. Our troops are needlessly in harms way.

I'm sure everything in Afghanistan would be alright if Obama just went over there in person and spoke to all of these people, you now, apologized in person. It seems to have worked everywhere else, right? I'm sure Obama, Have Apology Will Travel, is ready willing and able to take another vacation, I mean trip, on official business.

Truth you cant win wars unless you plan on killing all the people of the country your in. If you kill everyone that makes you a war criminal. There is no winning a war it is not a football game. No war has ever been won. The reason to keep fighting wars is strictly about money and thats all. Money and power are the only reasons for war. Republicans just want to get the oil from over there. Setting up for the next war. The war with iran is already in the works. Your party only wants to make a buck. Romney the frontrunner happens to be the riches guy in the room. Just like Bush2.0 Truth you must be in romneys tax bracket because if he is ever elected president your safe. The rest of us will be living like afgans.

The whole war is a lie first of all a country as rich and powerful fighting in a third world country for ten years. We have too much money and a professional fighting force the best in the world hands down. I know served five years. No way in hell we in a country fighting a enemy with no standing army. The people who run this war are arming both sides but 300 million citizens to dumb to see war for what it is. A money making project that never runs out of funds as long as we dummies keep sending our great young people to die for freedom. The lie of freedom is really evil, but we fall for it everytime hook line and sinker. Watch how syria keeps killing its people close ally of iran. Two more wars axis of evil next north korea. Repubs dont care who dies just about who gets paid.

If Obama had immediately pulled out, the right would still be attacking him as "soft on terrorism", "not supporting the troops", etc. If he waits he gets slammed for wasting lives and throwing good money after bad. Other than Obama's departure, exactly what strategy would the right approve of? Winning overnight at no cost? They'd probably object to that anyway.

The current Afghan government is not going to survive long after we depart. In this type of conflict the winner is going to be whomever the civilians support the most. When the choice was democracy or the Taliban, democracy had a chance. When Karzai blatantly stole the last election, he took democracy out of the equation. For the locals it's a choice between a corrupt despot whose minions steal from and abuse the populace, or a despotic theocracy that is only marginally worse.
