Carney backpedals on Gingrich slam

Washington (CNN) – On Monday White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said any politician who claimed they could guarantee $2.50 a gallon gasoline would be "lying." There is only one Republican presidential candidate – Newt Gingrich – who has made headlines calling for exactly that.

On Tuesday, the president's spokesman walked back the impolitic language.

"It is a fallacy, as I said yesterday, to suggest that there's some three-point plan or five-point plan out there that could magically, if you wave a wand, reduce the price that Americans are paying per gallon of gas," Carney told reporters. "I said yesterday that anybody who said that would be a liar. And I shouldn't have gone on motivations. I should have said that anybody who says that doesn't know what he's talking about."

On Monday, Carney said:

"What he [Obama] is not willing to do is to look the American people in the eye and claim that there is a strategy by which he can guarantee the price of gas will be $2.50 at the pump. Any politician who does that is lying, because it just - that strategy does not exist. It is a simple fact that there is no such plan that can guarantee the price of oil or the price at the pump."

In a statement released after Tuesday's White House briefing, Gingrich Communications Director Joe DeSantis called the Obama administration incompetent in dealing with economic issues.

"The idea of this administration, which has brought us a failed stimulus, boondoggles like Solyndra, $5 gasoline and record budget deficits, lecturing anyone on economics, would be funny if their utter incompetence weren't so painful for the American people."

The Gingrich camp says that $2.50 a gallon for gasoline is possible if domestic oil production increases.

"Newt's bold plan to maximize American energy production has the White House rattled because it exposes just how dramatically out of sync the president's hard-left energy policies are with the vast majority of the American people. $2.50 gasoline is achievable and drilling here, drilling now so we can pay less and be independent of Middle East oil is just common sense," DeSantis added.

The president has touted success in increasing domestic oil production and decreasing dependency on foreign oil.

"Oil production here in the United States is higher than it's been in about the past 8 years so we're making progress on both the production front and becoming more efficient as an economy but obviously that's not providing the kind of relief people are looking for at the gas pump," Obama told CNN affiliate KCNC in an interview Monday.

It is not politically correct to call liars, ' liars.'

How many times is the Obama Clown Show going to repeat the lies about increasing oil production in the US? It is DOWN BIG TIME on federal land but up on private and state land. Obama and the Democrats have an ongoing War on Fossil Fuel in this country. It's been going on for decades. When we get rid of Obama and the Democrats, then and ONLY then, will we be able to get gas and oil prices down in this country.

So where was Newt when gas was 4 dollars a gallon when bush was in office now we got republicans saying they can make gas 2.50 a gallon. Is Newt a oil speculator a tax collect a member of OPEC. No need to back away from calling him a liar. He is lying thru all 32 of his teeth. I am sick of all these republican lies not one except Dr. Paul has a plan to do anything hating the current president is not a plan for the future. Saying anything to get a vote is stupid and desperate. Newt gingrich is both.

How many times are right wingnuts going to repeat the lies of Fox foreign owned media with a hint of Saudi? Oil production is at an all time high, and domestic consumption is down. The increased cost is due to speculators.

The POTUS can't do much about it. Speculators determine prices. Newt Gingrich is full of it. All GOP candidates respond to every real event with a scripted call for gutting health, safety and environmental regulations, for more drilling, more tax breaks for oil companies, and approval of Keystone. Nothing new here. I am however appalled by the inability of so many Americans to think for themselves instead of being willfully whipsawed by the sensationalist media, including CNN.

Yes Mr. Carney, don't stoop to their level by calling them out by their proper names: liars, confabulators, etc. You have an image to maintain. We don't. Let us do the stooping for you: Newt is a lying sack of excrement.

Why doesn't anyone point out that increasing refining production would do more to lower gas prices than increasing oil production? Increase the supply of GASOLINE and you do infinitely more to lower prices than increasing oil supply.

@Truth – you wouldn't know the Truth if is bit you in the behind. I've been reading your posts for a while now and it is obvious you are so out in "Right Field" you have no clue as to what is really going on in the game.

If you paid any attention to any thing other than Fox News, you would know the President has NO, I repeat, NO influence over the cost of gas. It is the speculators, the market, the demand and the big oil companies who need to fill their poctets off the back of the average working American.

Get a clue Truth. Because you certainly do not have the truth on your side. Perhaps you should post as "Don't Have A Clue!" That I would believe.

So I guess when gas was $4 a gallon in 2006 Obama and the Democrats must have been secretly raising the prices on Bush huh? You are so ignorant it's actually sad!!!!

Not true according to Rudy and Sniffin. They're been ranting for YEARS Bush and Cheney was the cause of high oil prices. Libs can't have it both ways, like they always try to do.

Stop the Obama/Democrat War on Fossil Fuels, throw them all out.

@Truth and Nothing But the Truth: So back in 2006 when gas prices were $4 a gallon at the pump and Bush and GOP were in office that was okay, or maybe Bush was being handled by the EVIL Dems. You are so ignorant it's sad. Listen to everything everyone has to say, don't just fill yourself with one sided opinions and spew them out as facts!!!!

There's one simple way to bring gas down to $2.50 per gallon...and Newt probably could do it. The quickest way to lower gas prices is to have the economy completely tank! That's why gas prices were so low since late 2008. Before then...when the economy hadn't plummeted yet, gas was at about the same place it is now. It's simple economics, people.

remember this one folks "YOU LIE" from the Senate floor by Joe Wilson?? Yeah he said he was sorry somewhat afterwards but that did not stop him from signing autographs of the picture they took of him saying it. Plus trying to make money which he did from far right morons from saying it. You are too kind Mr Carney..I doubt if too many GOPers would have taken that statement back, especially since it is true.

  19. Amazing

What is interesting is that republicans do not want government in healthcare another area where costs are high, but they want government in gas prices. I thought they believe in free market capitalism. No President can directly influence the price of gas in the short term. Can they influence pricing over the long term? More probable. Newt and Bachmann were on anothe rplanet to state they could reduce the price of gas immediately.

And, if he really does have such a plan, why isn't he discussing it with the current Administration to help us out now? What, he is going to let us keep getting drained at the pumps until he wins? (Which will never happen!) What happened to helping the country as a whole? Or does that only apply if you win the office? What a pathetic human being this man is.

It's only those with narrow of mind and short of vision who buy into the notion that the President, or Democrats, or even Republicans for that matter, can control the price of gas at the pump, save for reducing the federal tax portion of the overall cost. Next up... Newt is going to show us how to control the weather.

I absolutely have not been claiming that for years. and, in fact, the words have never left my lips. You can't back that claim up whatsoever and you're completely full of crap. Don't put words in my mouth. Quote me or STFU.

Now that is a bold faced lie if I ever heard one,I have been on here for years and nothing like that has ever been said by Rudy or Sniffit.
Why in the world do Republicans and right wingnuts fail to learn the truth about how oil and gas are priced in the WORLD markets. You dont get to come up with your own prices if you are trading on the world market and no President can control gas prices.Newt is telling a 100% pure Republican lie that is never going to happen. Oil independence is not going to happen, and if you trade with Mexico or Canada or Saudi you are still going to be part of the worldwide pricing that has aquat to do do a Republican President or a Democratic President.
