Santorum hits back at 'economic lightweight' charge

(CNN) – Rick Santorum hit back at the charge he is an "economic lightweight" Monday, proclaiming the American people didn't want a Republican presidential candidate with ties to big banks.

"I heard Governor Romney here called me an economic lightweight because I wasn't a Wall Street financier like he was. Do you really believe this country wants to elect a Wall Street financier as the president of the United States?" Santorum asked at a campaign rally in Rockford, Illinois. Santorum was campaigning in the state ahead of Tuesday's primary.

Health care message wars heat up on anniversary of law

Washington (CNN) – Two years after President Barack Obama signed health care reform legislation - and with the U.S. Supreme Court about to consider a challenge from several states trying to overturn it - supporters and opponents of the controversial law are gearing up for a message war like it's 2009.

At that time, Democrats, emboldened by a new president and big gains in Congress, pushed sweeping legislation to expand coverage for uninsured Americans, clashing with Republicans who branded the bill "Obamacare" and warned it would trigger an unprecedented intrusion by Washington into people's medical decisions. Raucous crowds at town halls across the country that summer, many focusing on health care, captured the intensity of the debate. When Democrats muscled the final version of the bill through the House of Representatives in a late-night vote, not one Republican voted for it.

Poll: Romney lead widens in Illinois

(CNN) - Mitt Romney leads his closest rival Rick Santorum by double digits in the upcoming battleground of Illinois, according to a poll released Monday.

The American Research Group survey showed Romney with support from 44% of likely GOP primary voters, compared to 30% who backed Santorum. The fourteen point margin is a marked increase for Romney, who stood only four points ahead of his rival in a Chicago Tribune/WGN poll taken at the beginning of March.

Romney and Santorum face Illinois showdown

(CNN) – Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum launched a final campaign blitz across Illinois on Monday, the eve of their showdown in the Land of Lincoln primary that could cement Romney's front-running status or boost Santorum's conservative-backed surge in the Republican presidential race.

Tuesday's Illinois primary offers 54 delegates and follows a strong Romney victory in Puerto Rico, where the former Massachusetts governor picked up all 20 delegates at stake on Sunday by winning more than 80% of the vote.

Republicans ramp up efforts to slam Obama health law

(CNN) – As the two year anniversary of President Barack Obama's health care law approaches, the already-popular object of Republican scorn looks to become even more prominent on the campaign trail and in political ads.

The law, which will be challenged at the U.S. Supreme Court in oral arguments later this month, was signed March 23, 2010, and the Republican National Committee said Monday they were using the occasion to aggressively "highlight the failed promise of one of the president's signature accomplishments," according to RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.

Santorum dings Romney while defending contraception stance

(CNN) - Rick Santorum, making a round of morning show appearances ahead of a day of campaigning in Illinois Monday, took harsh aim at chief rival Mitt Romney, asserting the former Massachusetts governor "doesn't have a core."

Appearing on CBS, Santorum reiterated a point he's made on the campaign trail: that Romney's past support of government health care in Massachusetts wouldn't provide enough contrast with President Barack Obama in November's general election.

Santorum's congratulatory statement anything but congratulatory

(CNN) - Just a few hours after Mitt Romney's landslide victory over Rick Santorum in Puerto Rico's Republican presidential primary, the Santorum campaign put out an e-mail release titled "Santorum campaign congratulates Romney on Puerto Rico victory."

But the statement Sunday night from the campaign of the former senator from Pennsylvania was anything but congratulatory.

Crowley: Illinois feels like a must-win for Romney

(CNN) - Turns out the U.S. territories are very, very good to Mitt Romney. He romped in the commonwealth of Puerto Rico on Sunday, so much so that he took all 20 delegates. Oh, how Romney would love a romp in Illinois on Tuesday.

It wouldn't put him over the top, but it would put Romney solidly back on terra firma with at least a breeze at his back, maybe even enough of it to push him through what is likely to be another tough Southern primary, this one on Saturday in Louisiana, decidedly not Romney country.
