Obama jabs 'birthers' with Irish certificate

(CNN) - While receiving a formal certificate of Irish heritage at a St. Patrick's Day celebration on Tuesday, President Barack Obama didn't miss a beat in taking a jab at the so-called "birther" movement.

"This will have a special place of honor alongside my birth certificate," he joked, to great laughter.

Ireland's Taoiseach (prime minister) Enda Kenny presented Obama with the certificate at a White House reception in honor of the president's Irish roots.

The document was to serve, Kenny said, as a "permanent reminder" of Obama's trip last year to the Irish town of Moneygall, where the president's great-great-great grandfather emigrated from during the nineteenth century.

Earlier in the day, Obama and Kenny, along with Vice President Joe Biden, joined House Speaker John Boehner for a lunch on Capitol Hill.

At the reception in the East Room Tuesday night, Obama acknowledged the belated holiday festivity.

"Today is not in fact St. Patrick's Day," he joked. "We just wanted to prove that America considers Ireland a dear and steadfast friend every day of the year."

Also making an appearance at the reception was Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley of Maryland, whose Irish rock band, "O'Malley's March," performed for the guests, many of them dressed in green.

The White House reception marked an extended celebration of St. Patrick's Day for the president. On Saturday, Obama popped into a popular pub in Washington to have a pint of Guinness with other revelers.

Obama is a charmer. It must be his Irish roots. This Irish-American has got a one sided bromance going with Mr Obama. Michele has nothing to worry about since Barack and I don't play on the same team. Oh, yes we are both democrats. But, I am one of the Navy vets who was cheering the loudest when he got DADT repealed.

@dannydrums...think about the hitler quote " if you tell a lie enough, eventually most people will believe it" and now read your post again! You only prove hitler very correct about YOU! The birther movement and socialist movement are history..I wish people would just say the truth....they didn't believe a person of color could rise to a prominent position in the USA especially president of the united states...lick your wounds and realize people can be anything if they work hard and birthers are just haters...And those that think he is a socialist are true losers..get off fox news...and bill oreilly...

When I was still in elementary school, I used to watch in amazement how some adults would buy the National Enquirer, or would talk about WWE-type wrestling as if it were real. It taught me that some folks either have a very difficult time distinguishing ridiculous crap from reality, or just flat out enjoy believing fairy tales. Both of these "human qualities" live on in "birthers"

Right, dannydrums....Obama is lying about being an American citizen and he produced a fake birth certificate. How many millions of dollars do you think the whacko birthers have spent trying to investigate Obama's birth? And what have they produced? Absolutely nothing. Years of investigation by an army of rabid birthers and they have turned up NOTHING. Pretty sad, huh?

@Mke Sure they were born in Panama and Mexico, but they were born in MILITARY hospitals, on MILITARY bases, owned by and built by AMERICA. That's why no one has questioned it before. Not alot of people are 100% sure if Obama was in fact born in Hawaii. Not saying he's not an American, just stating what others' have said.

danny: I realize that you believe you've uncovered a Kenyan, Marxist, Muslim plot to overthrow our nation. Consider how many other Americans, on a percentage basis, share your beliefs. Although it is conceivable that you are correct in your assertions, I think it more likely lost your ability to think clearly – for reasons apparent in your post.

Dannydrums, apparently you were too busy hiding in your tin foil covered cave. The video has already been released and it doesnt show anything that hasnt already been said. He was born in Hawaii. That qualifies him to be president. Just like the when a child of 2 illegal immigrants is born after they jump the border. He can be president too.

I'm something of a Photoshop expert, having used it going all the way back to the Aldus (pre-Adobe) days as one of the original beta testers. I can tell you with certainty that there is no Phootshop-related proof that the birth certificate is a fake. Here's why. The "long-form" birth certificate you've seen is actually a scan of the original printed certificate composited onto a security paper pattern. My understanding is that generally one would not be able to receive the composited file but only a printout (hence the use of the security background to inhibit someone from manipulating the printout), but an exception was probably made in this case. You should understand that states never release the actual original paper certificate (or book entry depending upon the state), because if the original paper were lost, there would be no physical proof of the birth. As for the Brietbart videos, I suspect they were never released because they never existed,. But Brietbart was one of those guys who truly did believe that if he lied enough, the weak minded would believe it was the truth. We call those people birthers.

@dannydrums--How do you explain the doctor on Oahu who signed his birth certificate? How do you explain the birth announcements in the paper? How do you explain his saying that he was born in Hawaii in a book he wrote way before he was President? Give it up. Not to mention all the people who knew him in Hawaii.
